Editorial Review:

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) provides a "simple" set of operations that allows you to more easily monitor and manage network devices like routers, switches, servers, printers, and more. The information you can monitor with SNMP is wide-ranging--from standard items, like the amount of traffic flowing into an interface, to far more esoteric items, like the air temperature inside a router. In spite of its name, though, SNMP is not especially simple to learn.

O'Reilly has answered the call for help with a practical introduction that shows how to install, configure, and manage SNMP. Written for network and system administrators, the book introduces the basics of SNMP and then offers a technical background on how to use it effectively. "Essential SNMP" explores both commercial and open source packages, and elements like OIDs, MIBs, community strings, and traps are covered in depth. The book contains five new chapters and various updates throughout. Other new topics include:

Expanded coverage of SNMPv1, SNMPv2, and SNMPv3

Expanded coverage of SNMPc

The concepts behind network management and change management

RRDTool and Cricket

The use of scripts for a variety of tasks

How Java can be used to create SNMP applications

Net-SNMP's Perl module

The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing, with real examples, how to use SNMP for system and network administration tasks. Administrators will come away with ideas for writing scripts to help them manage their networks, create managed objects, and extend the operation of SNMP agents.

Once demystified, SNMP is much more accessible. If you're looking for a way to more easily manage your network, look no further than "Essential SNMP, 2nd Edition,"

Fails in achieving goals. 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I've earned two CS degrees and worked with SNMP and TCP for years. The problem with the book is that it is written by pompus insiders. SNMP is one of the worst standards used on the internet. You could teach a course on how such a rudimentary functionality was obfuscated by impenetrable terminology and poor implementation choices (ASN1/BER for example).

What is desperately needed in understanding SNMP is someone who knows what a disaster it is and tries to help bridge the terminology gaps. Unfortunately, the authors actually believe that the terminology and implementation were a good idea. They can't bring themselves to say "You know what the rest of the world calls an array? Well, we decided to call them 'columnar objects'"

The most useful part of the book was learning of the available SNMP parsers, 'smicng' and 'mosey' in an appendix. But now that I've told you, there is no reason to buy this book.

Editorial Review:

Provides a general introduction to such key concepts as: modeling and development, textual conventions, domains and control fields, and versions and migration. CD ROM included.

Good for developpers - bad for systems administrators 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is deep down description of all the OIDs and structure of SNMP.
If you want to know how the messages get through (SNMP get and other commands) in a developer's point of view, and you want a full dump of all the leafs and OIDs in the MIB structure, then this book is for you.
If you are a systems administrator looking for a practical way to understand how to use SNMP to manage your network devices, then look elsewhere (Essential SNMP, for instance).

Editorial Review:

This book is the definitive guide to SNMP-based network and internetwork management for network administrators, managers, and designers. Concise, focusing on practical issues, and completely up to date, it covers SNMPv1, SNMPv2, and the most recent SNMPv3, as well as RMON 1 and RMON 2. The book provides an extensive discussion on standard MIBs (Management Information Bases), including MIB-II and the all-important Ethernet Interface MIB for Internet connections. In addition, the book presents RMON 1 and RMON 2 enhancements, looking at statistics collection, alarms, and filters, as well as the extensions to RMON 1 for RMON 2 devices.

Great SNMP book for learning and reference 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I had a very limited amount of knowledge on SNMP but this book took me from 0 knowledge to the point where I use this as a reference on the job. I'm a network engineer that is in charge of managing our LAN/WAN sites across the US using SNMP based management and I find this book to be indispensible.

Best SNMP book I've seen 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book is the best SNMP book I've seen. It is extremely well organized and easy to read. It allowed me to quickly understand the fundamentals of SNMP v3 and the examples were very helpful in getting my job done. I highly recommend this book.

Best SNMP book you can find 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have been working on SNMP for a while, and have read a lot of SNMP books. This book is definitely the best one and it's written for both beginners and experienced engineers.

Everyone thinks this book is for beginners??? 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The one star rating I gave this book was because I bought this book based on all the people who said this was a great book for beginners to learn SNMP. ABSOLUTELY NOT! If you are a beginner, don't touch this book. Nowhere in the book does it show you how to actually USE SNMP practically. It does throw out some code here and there, but doesn't explain how or why the code works...let alone the most important part...how to implement it. It's just code by itself sitting there. This book may be a good reference for the experienced, but all it is is definitions of the different parts of SNMP. Big waste of time and money for a beginner.

Combines theory with extensive guidance for real-world SNMPv3 deployment to manage and secure today's information systems and prepare for tomorrow's. DLC: Simple Network Management Protocol (Computer network protocol).

Excellent resource 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Jon's book fills a void in the network management space. This is an essential reference for those looking for information on building a management system. Many useful hints. We used many of these ideas while I was working for a large internet service provided.

Editorial Review:

To manage a service network, managers have to control the network, the application, and the receiving devices - and that's not easy assignment. Here is a hands-on manual detailing how to design and deploy effective service management systems. This book covers everything service managers need to know: designing, systems, purchasing program software; automating applications; configuring edge devices; testing, monitoring; and measuring. It analyzes why our current network software and standards have so far been failures, and walks readers through the steps of building a complete SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) edge management system. It dissects and compares the many competing management protocols now in play.

Not what you'd expect for the price! 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The author makes some excellent points and shares lessons learned in his many years of commercial network management - not the least of which is how to yield meaningful metrics from the data you collect. If you're creating or deploying a highly customized network management system, there are many excellent points to be learned through his experience.

However, I was surprised to find that the real content of the book stops at page 69, with the remaining 250 pages listing hundreds of MIB parameters, various attributes, and his recommended threshold values for each. (Curiously, these pages are formatted in Courier font with excessive whitespace - it honestly looks like they did it just to add bulk to the book.) This content could have been represented in 1/3 the space with better layout, or even less space by using a table and referring the reader to the MIB files for non-pertinent details (not to mention that it might be more appropriate on a companion web page).

In the right hands, all this info is valuable - I'm sure I'll use it. But the book was sadly weak on text, and most people will be seriously disappointed with this purchase. Moral: check this one out before you buy.

Reading an RFC is more fun and more informative too! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The editor and publisher of this book should be ashamed. It is an extended rant by the author that has no business being bound in hard cover. The Pine Mountain Group recommends excerps from this book to get up to speed with SNMP. I wonder who at PMG is friends with the author. This book will teach only members of the "network management community" anything. Anyone seeking entry into the network management community will need to find another door. By reading no more than 20 to 40 pages a day I managed to go through the entire book but I am afraid that I did not add anything to my understanding of SNMP that was not already there from studying for my MCSE. This book was a profound disappointment. It is at once dense, superficial, earnest, and sarcastic. The shame of it is that this author could educate profoundly if a good editor enforced some discipline or a co-author came in to help with communicating with those who are not the author's peers.

Editorial Review:

Revised edition provides an introduction to networking management. Contains the latest information on SNMPv2 CD ROM included.

Mostly competent but pretty confusing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Black does a reasonably good job of selecting relevant content, but reading this book is difficult. There are numerous typos - some of them in crucial diagrams - and the writing style is dense and unclear, often leaving you pondering a sentence for hours because you feel that it's important but have no idea what it means. A much better resource for this subject is Stallings, "SNMP, SNMPv2, and CMIP: The Practical Guide to Network-Management Standards". Unfortunately, that is out of print, and I don't know if Stallings has superseded it with any of his numerous other books.

Editorial Review:

Exploit OSI or SNMP for streamlined network management. Now it's easier than ever to keep your networks interacting smoothly and efficiently with hardware and software from virtually any vendor. Uyless Black's Network Management Standards, Second Edition, lets you directly compare today's most prevalent network management standards-OSI, Internet and IEEE-to help you select the approach best suited to maintaining trouble-free interconnections among different computers, terminals, multiplexors, PBSx and other vital elements of your network. You get an in-depth evaluation of OSI protocols, MIBs, CMISE and CMIP, OSI systems management, Telecommunications Management Networks, SNMP versions 1 and 2, directories and network management, implementing OSI standards and more.
