Editorial Review:

Benjamin Franklin, writes journalist and biographer Walter Isaacson, was that rare Founding Father who would sooner wink at a passer-by than sit still for a formal portrait. What's more, Isaacson relates in this fluent and entertaining biography, the revolutionary leader represents a political tradition that has been all but forgotten today, one that prizes pragmatism over moralism, religious tolerance over fundamentalist rigidity, and social mobility over class privilege. That broadly democratic sensibility allowed Franklin his contradictions, as Isaacson shows. Though a man of lofty principles, Franklin wasn't shy of using sex to sell the newspapers he edited and published; though far from frivolous, he liked his toys and his mortal pleasures; and though he sometimes gave off a simpleton image, he was a shrewd and even crafty politician. Isaacson doesn't shy from enumerating Franklin’s occasional peccadilloes and shortcomings, in keeping with the iconoclastic nature of our time--none of which, however, stops him from considering Benjamin Franklin "the most accomplished American of his age," and one of the most admirable of any era. And here’s one bit of proof: as a young man, Ben Franklin regularly went without food in order to buy books. His example, as always, is a good one--and this is just the book to buy with the proceeds from the grocery budget. --Gregory McNamee

Life is better when you have a direction to go in 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I got this book for my daughter who is a natural when it comes to photography. It is a hobby she just seems to have an "eye" for. It came to my address and I took a look at the book just to make sure it was what i thought it was and was 'right' for her. It got ME excited, and I havent taken pictures in years though my eyes and mind never stop thinking about what a great picture some of the things I see around me might make. I cannot claim whether or not this book is ALL inclusive, but it was very clear that it was pretty darn close enough. I think any one can have a great talent, but like a person dropped in the middle of a large lake....it is so much better when you have a direction to go in. Why swim in circles? Take the pictures you want but know at the same time what you might DO with them and where you might sell them. You'll be able to enjoy a hobby fully and at the same time possibly make or supplement a lifestyle or living.
good luck to all the photographers out there

VERY HELPFUL, WITH A CAVEAT 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The author makes a persuasive case for small, liberal arts colleges, many of whom are not well-known. He describes each school in detail, and does a very good job of pointing out each school's advantages. Initially I was quite impressed with the information.

What is lacking is very much information about problem areas or weaknesses of each college. The book is so laudatory, it lacks even-handedness. I am recommending the book highly, but think it needs to be complemented with a more balanced book. As an example, Pope (rightly, I think) raves about St. John's College in New Mexico, which uses the "Great Books" as primary sources. But, this praise needs to be balanced. Here are comments about St John's from The Princeton Review's "The Best 368 Colleges": "full of relentless intellectual duress..." " a school for super-geeks"...Everyone is a "voracious reader" and "kind of neurotic".
I'm not saying these comments are all valid, but they should be included for the reader's consideration.

Other than this criticism, I think the book is a great asset, and one we'll make good use of in researching colleges.

Editorial Review:

Now fully revised—the perennially popular guide to choosing the right college

Prospective college students and their parents have been relying on Loren Pope’s expertise since 1995, when he published the first edition of this indispensable guide. This new edition profiles 41 colleges—all of which outdo the Ivies and research universities in producing performers, not only among A students but also among those who get Bs and Cs. Contents include:

• Evaluations of each school’s program and “personality”
• Candid assessments by students, professors, and deans
• Information on the progress of graduates

This new edition not only revisits schools listed in previous volumes to give readers a comprehensive assessment, it also addresses such issues as homeschooling, learning disabilities, and single-sex education.

This book changed my life! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

An earlier edition of Jeff Herman's book changed my life! I found a great agent in it and now I have had nearly 17 books published, most of which have been since I was accepted by my first agent, Bert Holtje (now retired) whose name I found in Jeff Herman. This is a book written by a literary agent and gives us all the inside scoop on what individual literary agents are seeking. Most of the worthwhile publishers these days only take agented books, and any sensible author nowadays has an agent. This is the best book by far for those wanting an agent, and as someone whose publishing life has been changed by it I cannot recommend it too highly to my fellow authors! Christopher Catherwood (author of CHURCHILL'S FOLLY: HOW WINSTON CHURCHILL CREATED IRAQ, agented by Gene Brissie of James Peters Associates, MAKING WAR IN THE NAME OF GOD, agented by his successor Ed Claflin, and now represented by the legendary Frank Weimann and Jaimee Garbacik of Literary Group International, for WINSTON CHURCHILL: THE FLAWED GENIUS OF WORLD WAR TWO, all of whom have appeared in earlier and current editions of this book)

Editorial Review:

Calling all writers, get your manuscripts out of the “slush pile” and into the bookstore with Jeff Herman’s Guide to Book Publishers, Editors & Literary Agents. More comprehensive than ever before—and now 1,000 pages—this revised edition describes the insider dynamics at hundreds of U.S. and Canadian publishers, with hundreds of names and specialties for book acquisition editors. Nearly 200 of the most powerful literary agents reveal invaluable tips, as if they were having a private conversation with a special friend. With detailed information on what to do (and what not to do) to break the code, break down the walls, and get that first book, second book, or thirtieth book published, bought and read, Jeff Herman’s Guide is the go-to source for writers everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Is "legislator" pronounced with an "er" sound at the end or an "or"? Is the Jewish festival of lights spelled "Chanukah," "Hanuka," or "Hanukkah"? With Webster's New World College Dictionary, which promises to describe rather than prescribe, you can take your pick. The dictionary includes more than 150,000 entries, including brief biographical and geographical notes and useful drawings and diagrams (depictions of four kinds of buoys, for example). The guide to pronunciation and symbols is given on every other page, handy for those who don't like to refer to the inside cover each time they forget how to pronounce the sound of the schwa (of course, the guides on the inside and front covers are more extensive). Starred words refer to Americanisms, which number more than 11,000, such as "hornswoggle" and "Hopi" and "kitchenette." The definitions themselves are clear and simple and seldom have you scurrying to another page for a definition of the definition. Easy to use and understand, Webster's New World College Dictionary is a fine addition to any high school or college student's desk set. --Rebecca A. Staffel
