Truly Useful 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Following a series of recommended drives throughout the Middle South from west to east, this compact little book provides an excellent listing of sights (including brief descriptions) that a reasonably intelligent reader might enjoy. I read it with highlighter in hand, marking the sights that appealed to me, an approach I recommend to others.

Mr. White appears to be an active bird-watcher (he apparently has written other books on that subject). Readers who share that interest will find this book particularly interesting, since he highlights the best bird-watching spots along the Gulf Coast.

Good Driving Guide to Southwest 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a good sightseeing guide that should help anyone who is interested in traveling the States of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico by car.

Even if you know you want to see the Grand Canyon, what else do you do in the Northern Arizona / Southern Utah area? This book answers that question.

Arranged by state, the book highlights different attractions in each area. It also suggests driving loops, designed to hi-light the highlights while traveling a circular route along major highways. This is certainly designed well for someone who is unfamiliar with the area and wants a travel itinerary laid out with suggested sights and attractions.

Accommodations or restraints are not listed, so one would have to look to another guide or the internet for those. This book can get you started with your destinations, however.

Editorial Review:

This guide offers 20 driving itineraries, selected and driven by a National Geographic regional travel writer, showcasing the best the area has to offer. Whether you are discovering the beauty of Cedar Breaks National Monument or working on developing your own inner beauty at Sedona, there is something for everyone in this book. It is perfect for the casual weekend or for weeks-long vacations filled with detailed driving and site information, entertaining stories and regional lore, as well as useful travel tips. Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout, the book displays the same map, picture, and production quality that readers have come to expect from National Geographic publications. The fresh new look includes a redesigned cover, restyled interiors, updated text and maps, and new sites and photographs. Plus, eight additional pages will provide information on lodgings and restaurants in the major towns and cities.

Editorial Review:

National Geographic's Driving Guides to America: New York and Pennsylvania and New Jersey opens with this advice: "When you pass this way traveling by wheel, imagine the mid-Atlantic as frontier. Think about walking the trails blazed by the Iroquois, Henry Hudson, and Harriet Tubman, for these lands will tell you a thousand stories." You might begin your journey with a walk from Battery Park, "a sliver of green at the southern tip of Manhattan Island," through lower Manhattan, and on to the Fulton Fish Market in the South Street Seaport Historic District. Or tour Pennsylvania Dutch Country starting in Harrisburg and looping around to Lancaster and historic Gettysburg, which "marks the improbable site of the bloodiest battle in the Civil War." Along the way, author Randall Peffer acts as your guide, offering directions and travel tips, pointing out sights you shouldn't miss, and making historical connections.

The suggested routes, which include mileage, estimated trip length, and the best time of year to travel, are perfect for planning your excursion and choosing where you want to stop. Brief descriptions, complete with phone numbers and business hours of the various sites, correspond to highlighted points on the maps. Woodstock, for example, is stop #4 on the tour of the Albany-Catskill region. "Hippie folk with tie-dye shirts, long hair, beads, sandals, and granny dresses will hark you back to the sixties.... While the legendary 1969 rock concert didn't happen here (it took place 50 miles away in Bethel), Woodstock's mystique as a place of magic and inspiration for the young--and the young at heart--endures."

Sidebars on the "Jersey Tea Party" (1774), "Treason at West Point," and the "Eternal Tap" of Pennsylvania's Straub Brewery, among other topics, offer background and interesting details about the sights along the outlined itineraries. Perhaps the finest feature of the guide is the more than 120 full-color photographs, which are in keeping with the care and quality of all National Geographic publications. The stunning depictions of the view from the Olympic ski jump at Lake Placid, the eroding ruins of the Austin Dam disaster, and the waterfalls at Ricketts Glen State Park are sure to engage your imagination and inspire you to pack your bags and choose your destination. --Heidi Robinson

Editorial Review:

If you've ever had a Kerouac-inspired desire to take to the open road but need a little formal direction, National Geographic's Driving Guides to America: Pacific Northwest will motivate you to pack the car and strike out on your journey. For each of 22 long drives in 3 states--Washington, Oregon, and Alaska--National Geographic provides the itinerary, general driving directions, and highlights of sights to visit along the way. Cruise the Denali Highway through Alaska's wild interior, get your feet wet in Washington's Hoh Rain Forest ("140 inches of annual rainfall"), or gaze at the jaw-dropping awesomeness of Oregon's Hells Canyon, "the deepest gorge in the United States." The suggested routes, which include mileage, estimated trip length, and the best time of year to travel, are perfect for planning your trek and choosing where you want to stop. Brief descriptions, complete with phone numbers and business hours of the various sites, correspond to highlighted points on the maps.

Sidebars offer background and share interesting details about the sights along the mapped-out itineraries. You'll learn, for example, that the deep blue of Crater Lake "stems from the lake's exceptional clarity and depth. As light passes through clear water, it gets absorbed color by color ... Crater Lake is so deep--1,932 feet, among the deepest in the world--that every hue gets absorbed except for that radiant dark blue, which is scattered back to the surface." Complementing the text are more than 120 full-color photographs, including one of magnificent Crater Lake, which measure up to National Geographic's characteristically high standards. A full index and an appendix with contact information for motel chains and tourist boards round out the reference. Next time you get the urge to visit the rocky beaches and stunning, jagged mountains of Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, grab National Geographic's Driving Guides to America: Pacific Northwest and hit the road. --Heidi Robinson
