Ham Radio for Dummies 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ham Radio for Dummies is an excellent choice as a starting point for the person interested in ham radio. It covers just about any ham radio activity possible and explains them in just enough technical language to be understood. The engineering is left out!! Everything from antennas to equipment purchases is covered. I have been a ham since 1968, and I still found this book of interest. I learned quite a bit about the newer digital modes being used on the air.

Editorial Review:

All the information you need to design your own complete antenna system.

Since the first edition in September 1939, radio amateurs and professional engineers have turned to The ARRL Antenna Book as THE source of current antenna theory and a wealth of practical how-to construction projects. Use this book to discover even the most basic antenna designs-- wire and loop antennas, verticals, and Yagis--and for advanced antenna theory and applications. Many of the antennas in this edition benefit directly from advances in sophisticated computer modeling.

This 21st edition has been extensively revised to include information you can use to build highly optimized or specialized antennas. The book includes new content on Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) techniques, phased arrays, S-parameters as used in modern vector network analyzers (VNA), Beverage receiving antennas, mobile screwdriver antennas, ionospheric area-coverage maps, and much...much more.

Editorial Review:

To an outsider, the world of ham radio is one of basement transmitters, clunky microphones, Morse code, and crackly, possibly clandestine, worldwide communications, a world both mysterious and geeky. But the real story is a lot more interesting: indeed, there are more than two million operators worldwide, including people like Walter Cronkite and Priscilla Presley. Gandhi had a ham radio, as do Marlon Brando and Juan Carlos, king of Spain.
Hello World takes us on a seventy-year odyssey through the world of ham radio. From 1927 until his death in 2001, operator Jerry Powell transmitted radio signals from his bedroom in Hackensack, New Jersey, touring the world’s most remote locations and communicating with people from Greenland to occupied Japan. Once he made contact with a fellow ham operator, he exchanged postcards – known as QSLs cards – with them. For seven decades, Powell collected hundreds of these cards, documenting his fascinating career in amateur radio and providing a dazzling graphic inventory of people and places far flung.
This book is both an introduction to the fascinating world of ham and a visual feast for anyone interested in the universal language of graphic design.

There are better options 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is OK and I'm glad I bought it, but the author spends too much time on the theory and history of antique radios. Only about 1/3rd of the book is devoted to troubleshooting, and even that part is a little bit sketchy. I think a person can find better troubleshooting manuals, tube manuals, and other interesting literature for free online if you just spend a few minutes searching. It has been my experience that the New Jersey Antique Radio Club is a great resource.

Mr. Carr wrote a great book, but you can do better online.

My goal was accomplished by reading this book. 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been interested in and tinkered with electronics since I was a boy, but I didn't have the knowledge to do any involved repairs. Over the years my family and I have had tube radios that worked fine at one time, then started to hum, with the humming eventually getting so bad it drowned out everything else. I remembered my folks taking one of these sets to a radio/TV repairman when I was a kid and being told it wasn't worth fixing. For years I have wanted to find out what caused this and maybe fix those radios. Some 30 years later I spied this book, bought it, and found out what all that humming was caused by. I have proceeded to fix 3 of those old radios that now work like new, for only a few dollars in parts! This book taught me everything I needed to know to do it. I couldn't be more pleased. I had to re-read some sections a few times to "get it", but the info I needed was all there. I can't recommend this book highly enough!!

Editorial Review:

A presentation of the history, theory and practical operation of old-time, home, auto, amateur, shortwave and CB radio sets which provides the detailed instructions and schematics required to repair or rebuild them. A troubleshooting section is included, with charts and pin-out diagrams.

Outdated - Make sure you get the latest version 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the outdated version and will leave you unprepared for the tests. make sure you look and get the most recent version to better prepare. Otherwise, the book is a pretty good resource when preparing for the exams. Well organized and easy to follow.

Excellent resource for the technicians test... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you want to actually know why the answers are what they are on the test, instead of just taking practice test after practice test and trying to memorize answers, then you NEED this book. I wasn't satisfied just taking the practice tests online and memorizing answers, so I bought this book - learned the information - and almost got a perfect score on the FCC's technicians class test. Most people I know, who didn't buy any books, barely passed. What kind of a score do you want?

now you're talking 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this manual only to find out that the element 2 test expired in July of 2007. I subsequently purchased "The ARRL HAM RADIO LICENSE MANUAL" which contains the question pool beginning July 1,2006.
This is an excellent manual.

excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you use this book, and take the practice tests online until your passing them fairly consistently, you will have a very high probability of passing your test.

Best way to study is to work with the book about 1/2 hour a day, no more.

Take your time, then take online practice tests each day until your test date.

You'll be all set. I think I only got 1 question wrong on my test - and I'm certainly no natural at this stuff.

A Great Book on CB and Radio in General. Good Historic Ref. 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Great illustrations and commentary about CB on both a radio and cultural level. Will keep it handy in my 4WD as a reference book for my CB. As a result of this book, I finally figured out and fixed the mystery of my SWR problem! I always wondered why CB was such a fad before, and now I know. It's a lot of fun!

For a book on CB, it's better than I thought it would be 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 37 people found this review helpful.

While I disagree with some of the authors sentiments about the quality and purpose of Citizens Band radio in our society, the material is suitably written and technically accurate, and for those without technical knowlege it would be rather usefull. I found some of the "lingo" humorous, but overall it was a bland read. I consider CB too limited to be a reasonable alternative to FRS/GMRS or Amateur Radio, as the author has implied it is. For un-licensed operation, the Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) are far better alternatives than CB, and are easier to use as mobiles and portables (walkie-talkies). You can even get an Amateur Radio license *without taking a morse code test* these days, and the privileges that come with that license are far beyond what CB could ever possibly offer. Read "Now Your Talking!" to see what I mean. Writing a book about CB radio, or in any way contributing to it's maintenance, is about the equivalent of feeding a rabbid dog: it's going to die sooner or later, and is a problem (to the licensed radio services) while it's around, so why not 'put it down' and be done with it? -just my opinion

Editorial Review:

From the authors of best-selling books on CB radio and satellite television (with a combined 40 years of expertise in the consumer electronis field) comes information on AM, FM, SSB, HAM, SKIP, and DX. includes sections on CB slang, buying and installing radios and antennas, trouble-shooting your rig, American and British CB rules and regulations, and emergency procedures.

Editorial Review:

A perfect gift or companion for Hams-to-be, new Hams, old Hams, young Hams, or just downright confused Hams. Lots of illustrations, definitions, and examples make hamming easy and fun. A great learning tool both before and after the exam. A non-technical guide on how to choose a radio, set up a station, put up an antenna, talk on the air for the first time, and how to use packet, Morse Code, SSTV, RTTY, and more. Whether you'd like to markedly improve your own skill level, or the skill level of your students, this book will help you.

Easy-to-understand, Ham Radio: Simplified was written expressly for new or confused hams. It details basics often not covered in the classroom curriculum and clearly defines common practices and protocols the new ham will encounter when on-the-air. No- nonsense explanations help you grasp difficult concepts with greater ease. After reading this book you'll approach your exam or your radio with confidence and enthusiasm.

A Must-Have Book for Shortwave Listeners and Amateurs 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

There will most likely be some new hobbyists who will flip through the pages of this book and think that it will be too technical for them. Actually, this book is quite user-friendly and understandable, especially the first two chapters covering the ionosphere, general propogation and the solar cycle.

What will probably be the most used part of the book, particularly by beginners but also by experienced hobbyists, is the Do-It-Yourself Prediction Chart section. Here you can get an idea as to what reception conditions can be expected from specific areas of the world into a specific region of the United States (and presumably the southern part of Canada).

"The New Propogation Handbook" is a great way to learn about how shortwave radio waves get to your receiver from all over the world, but it should also be thought of as a tool in the hobby of SWL as much as the "World Radio Television Handbook" or "Passport to Worldband Radio." I believe that new hams should find it particularly useful.

Editorial Review:

The NEW Shortwave Progagation Handbook may well be the only book you'll need on the subject of ionospheric propagation! It is a "must read" for Radio Amateurs, Shortwave Listeners, and radio communicators of any type who need to make the most productive use of the radio spectrum, regardless of the time of day, the season of the year, or the state of the sunspot cycle. It will become your ever-present companion a the operating table as you master the art of shortwave radio progagation.

Very full of information but ... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

.. also full of confusing graphical pages so you can not resolve what is the comercial and what article!

Once again the graphical arrangement of comercial, articles, content for example which you can not find quickly and the the rest of the book is not in accordance with the technical content of the book!

After some time of digging you can find everything what you need but again: it is very confusing book becuse of the similar colours of the comercials and articles!
For stars because of that!

It is more accurate for local frequecies than WRTH!

Enjoy anyway!
