Editorial Review:

The first page of Joel C. Rosenberg's first thriller, The Last Jihad, put listeners inside the cockpit of a hijacked jet, coming in on a kamikaze attack into an American city...but it was written nine months before September 11, 2001. As Jihad unfolds, an American president finds himself in a war with Saddam Hussein over terrorism and weapons of mass destruction...but it was published five months before the actual war with Iraq began.

Rosenberg's second novel, The Last Days, opens with the death of Yasser Arafat and an American president pressing for peace in the Middle East...but it was published thirteen months before the actual death of Yasser Arafat.

Now comes The Ezekiel Option, an explosive new political thriller that literally feels ripped from tomorrow's headlines.

With Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat out of the way, a dazzling era of security and prosperity seems to have come to the Middle East. With the help of an American president trying to spread freedom and democracy, the Israelis and the Palestinians have signed a historic peace agreement. Violence is down. Their economies are booming.

But a new evil looms on the horizon. A dictator is rising in Russia. Iran is feverishly building nuclear weapons. A new Axis of Evil is emerging, led by Moscow and Tehran. And Jon Bennett and Erin McCoy – two senior White House advisors – find themselves facing the most chilling question of their lives: Is the world rushing to the brink of an apocalypse prophesied more than 2,500 years ago?

Not bad. Not as strong as Flynn's others. 3 out of 5 stars.

This one really slowed down in the middle. I would say at about the 3/4 mark it picked up and I enjoyed it from that point forward. This one is not as strong as some of Flynn's others like "Consent to Kill".

Action packed but lacks depth 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Flynn uses the same protagonist (a counterterrorism expert) in this novel as he did in "Transfer of Power". This one is not nearly as good, it lacks depth, especially with the characters. Flynn is not at the level of Clancy, Higgins, and others of that genre, as some have espoused. Even so, "Memorial Day" is still an exciting read----a page turner, action packed, full of technical weapons, and you don't need to think too much.

Centered around political espionage and a Muslim terrorist plot on the United States. The assassin, Mitch Rapp is back again to save the country.

Flynn uses his novels to get out sound political messages: how should we be treating terrorists?; torture?; is the terror war a law enforcement issue?; should not the professionals be allowed to do their work?

Wish you well
Scott

Editorial Review:

Fighting terrorism on foreign ground, CIA superagent Mitch Rapp does whatever it takes to protect American freedom.

MEMORIAL DAY

CIA intelligence has pointed to a major terrorist attack on the United States, just as the nation's capital prepares for a grand Memorial Day tribute to the veterans of World War II. Racing to Afghanistan, Mitch Rapp leads a commando raid on an al Queda stronghold in a remote border village -- and defuses plans for a nuclear strike on Washington. The crisis averted, the special ops work is done. But Rapp knows, in the face of a new kind of enemy, nothing is as it seems -- and it's up to him alone to avert a disaster of unimaginable proportions.

Editorial Review:

A propulsive, relentless page-turner.
A terrifying evocation of a paranoid world where no one can be trusted.
A surprising, unexpected story of love and family, of hope and resilience.
CHILD 44 is a thriller unlike any you have ever read.

"There is no crime."

Stalin's Soviet Union strives to be a paradise for its workers, providing for all of their needs. One of its fundamental pillars is that its citizens live free from the fear of ordinary crime and criminals.

But in this society, millions do live in fear . . . of the State. Death is a whisper away. The mere suspicion of ideological disloyalty-owning a book from the decadent West, the wrong word at the wrong time-sends millions of innocents into the Gulags or to their executions. Defending the system from its citizens is the MGB, the State Security Force. And no MGB officer is more courageous, conscientious, or idealistic than Leo Demidov.

A war hero with a beautiful wife, Leo lives in relative luxury in Moscow, even providing a decent apartment for his parents. His only ambition has been to serve his country. For this greater good, he has arrested and interrogated.

Then the impossible happens. A different kind of criminal-a murderer-is on the loose, killing at will. At the same time, Leo finds himself demoted and denounced by his enemies, his world turned upside down, and every belief he's ever held shattered. The only way to save his life and the lives of his family is to uncover this criminal. But in a society that is officially paradise, it's a crime against the State to suggest that a murderer-much less a serial killer-is in their midst. Exiled from his home, with only his wife, Raisa, remaining at his side, Leo must confront the vast resources and reach of the MBG to find and stop a criminal that the State won't admit even exists.

Tom Rob Smith graduated from Cambridge in 2001 and lives in London. Child 44 is his first novel.

Editorial Review:

On June 1, 1956, the New York Times broke a story that captured the imagination of the world. Another Dead Sea Scroll had been found, unlike any before it, describing unimaginable treasures worth untold billions buried in the hills east of Jerusalem and under the Holy City itself.

In the years that followed, scholars came to believe that THE COPPER SCROLL COULD BE HISTORY'S GREATEST TREASURE MAP, one that could not only lead to the treasures but pave the way to the building of the Third Jewish Temple.

But the scroll's code has never been broken, and experts from all sides warn that any effort by Israel to rebuild their Temple in Jerusalem would unleash a war of biblical proportions.

Now, exactly fifty years after the Copper Scroll was unveiled, New York Times bestselling author Joel C. Rosenberg takes you on his most exciting and heart-pounding ride yet.

SADDAM HUSSEIN IS GONE.
YASSER ARAFAT IS DEAD.
A NEW IRAQ IS RISING.

Now White House advisors Jon Bennett and Erin McCoy find themselves facing a terrifying new threat triggered by an ancient mystery.

Editorial Review:

A master assassin. A vendetta years in the making. And a counterterrorism operative who will risk everything -- even treason -- to keep the people he loves alive.

Brad Thor, the New York Times bestselling author of Takedown, delivers an explosive international thriller featuring Navy SEAL turned Homeland Security operative Scot Harvath, who somewhere, somehow, has left the wrong person alive.

"Thou shalt not negotiate with terrorists..."

Six months ago: In the dead of the night, five of the most dangerous detainees in the war on terror are pulled from their isolation cells in Guantanamo Bay, held at gunpoint, and told to strip off their orange jumpsuits. Issued civilian clothes and driven to the base airfield, they are loaded aboard a Boeing 727 and set free.

Present day: Covert counterterrorism agent Scot Harvath awakens to discover that his world has changed violently -- and forever. A sadistic assassin with a personal vendetta is wreaking havoc of biblical proportions. Unleashing nightmarish horrors on those closest to Harvath, the attacker thrusts everything Harvath holds dear -- including his life -- into absolute peril.

Ordered by the president to stay out of the investigation, Harvath is forced to mount his own operation to uncover the conspiracy and to exact revenge. When he discovers a connection between the attacks and a group of prisoners secretly released from Guantanamo, Harvath must ask himself previously unthinkable questions about the organizations and the nation he has spent his life serving.

A renegade from his own government, Harvath will place his life on the line as his search for the truth draws him into a showdown with one of the most dangerous men on the face of the earth.

Brad Thor roars through this nonstop adventure full of international intrigue, twisted betrayals, and ultimate revenge.

Animal Farm is instructive for our presidential election. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

2008 is the ideal time to apply the principles that we have learned from Animal Farm and apply them to November's 2008 Presidential election. Just as Napolean, the pig, instigated a rebellion against the owner of the farm (Jones) by talking about how great things will be once the animals ruled the farm, today we are told by the Obama Democrats that once Bush and the Republicans are thrown off the farm (Washington), that all will be well, that things will look wonderful, and that none of us will ever be hungry again. In Animal Farm, though, the animals were far worse off after Mr. Jones was kicked off the farm. Like Obama, Napolean also did not have any experience in running a farm, but this did not stop him from stating that he would be more competent and able to handle the farm. Further, once Napolean took charge of the farm, the interests of the other animals started to decline more and more. He started to remove any sense of democratic principles by eliminating the need for public comment and strongly took action against any potential dissent. This is exactly where the Obama Democrats want to take our country--first, by stating that they (and he alone) can manage the country -- even though there is no experience to suggest that he ought to, and secondly, by eliminating any form of dissent by destroying talk radio and also by heavily regulating and taxing the internet in order to suppress the one free and open medium that is available to counter their message. The lesson of Animal Farm is clear: those who claim to provide us with utopia on earth often will create hell instead through dictatorship, centralization of authority, and a desire to obtain power for power's sake. If we learn the lessons of Animal Farm, our nation will be far better off.

Editorial Review:

Having got rid of their human master, the animals of Manor Farm look forward to a life of freedom and plenty. But as a clever, ruthless elite among them takes control, the other animals find themselves hopelessly ensnared in the old ways. Orwell's chilling story of the betrayal of idealism through tyranny and corruption, is as fresh and relevant today as when it was first published in 1945.

Have Not started this one, but after reading the 3 previous works, I feel that this one will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Exciting, fast action good book 4 out of 5 stars.

The book was good and a nice sequel to The Last Jihad. The audio version was better than the Last Jihad, but not quite as good as the Copper Scroll. But overall a suspense filled book that will keep you engaged and anxious for each event as they unroll in this, "The Last Days".

Reviewing "The Last Days" by Joel C. Rosenberg 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat page-turner from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. Can't wait to read the others in the series. You won't go wrong reading this!!!! Full of political intrigue and interesting info.

Editorial Review:

With over 400,000 copies in print, this New York Times best-seller opens with White House advisors Jon Bennett and Erin McCoy heading into Gaza when their convoy is attacked by a massive explosion. Soon, Yassir Arafat is dead, Islamic radicals are trying to take over the West Bank and Gaza, Iraqi terrorists are targeting Americans, and Bennett begins to wonder if he is witnessing signs of the last days before the return of Christ. Since The Last Days was first published, Arafat has died and Hamas has taken over the Palestinian Authority.

Don't Miss This One 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Brother Odd, the third book in the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz, takes the reader to the hills of the Sierra Mountains in northern California. Odd (whose strange name supposedly comes from an error on his birth certificate where the T was dropped from Todd) has come to St. Bartholomew's Abbey to rejuvenate his soul after the horrific events of the past in which he lost his one true love. Thinking the quiet abbey will be the perfect place to rest, Odd is quickly thrown into the center of utter chaos.

Odd has the unique ability to see the lingering dead, those who, for whatever reason, have not left this world for the next. He also sees bodachs, ghostlike figures whose appearance indicates impending violence. When Odd discovers a bodach lurking outside the abbey, he sets out to find what might be attracting it. Is it after the peaceful sisters or brothers? Or perhaps the many physically and mentally challenged children who call St. Bart's home? As more and more bodachs appear, Odd knows time is running out.

As a big Koontz fan, I was eager to read Brother Odd. I had recently read another of Koontz's works, (The Darkest Evening of the Year) which had disappointed and I wanted to give one of my favorite authors another try. Fortunately, Brother Odd delivers all that Koontz fans expect - and more. Told in the first person, the reader comes to know Odd quite well. He is a likeable young man and one of Koontz's best developed characters. The interactions he has with the sisters and brothers are well-written and many of these minor characters are also truly interesting people who add much to the story. I particularly enjoyed the relationship of Odd with Rodion Romanovich, a suspect turned partner, and how it evolved as the story unfolded. There are even a few `lingering dead' minor characters who add charm and laughter to the story. When Elvis first appeared, I thought, `this is going too far,' but Koontz handled the character with such levity that I soon found myself looking forward to the all too brief appearances by The King.

If you are looking for a good Dean Koontz story with the trademark twists and turns that this bestselling author is known for, then pick up a copy of Brother Odd. It is not necessary to read the previous two books in this series first, you'll be up to speed instantly.

Quill says: Brother Odd takes the reader on a high-velocity ride through the world of the supernatural. Don't miss it.

Editorial Review:

Loop me in, odd one. The words, spoken in the deep of night by a sleeping child, chill the young man watching over her. For this was a favorite phrase of Stormy Llewellyn, his lost love, and Stormy is dead, gone forever from this world. In the haunted halls of the isolated monastery where he had sought peace, Odd Thomas is stalking spirits of an infinitely darker nature. . . .Brother Odd.

Through two New York Times bestselling novels, Odd Thomas has established himself as one of the most beloved and unique fictional heroes of our time. Now, wielding all the power and magic of a master storyteller at the pinnacle of his craft, Dean Koontz follows Odd into a singular new world where he hopes to make a fresh beginning—but where he will meet an adversary as old and inexorable as time itself.

Editorial Review:

A weapon designed to decimate the Roman Empire has just become the number one threat to the United States.

From the national bestselling author of The Lions of Lucerne, Path of the Assassin, and State of the Union comes the most gripping international thriller yet featuring Navy SEAL turned covert counterterrorism agent Scot Harvath.

"Scot Harvath is the perfect all-American hero for the post-September 11th world."

-- Nelson DeMille

When a mystery thousands of years in the making threatens to catapult the enemies of America to a sure and decisive victory, the only person the president can call for help is the man the administration has just fired.

Caught live on Al Jazeera in an off-the-books operation, Scot Harvath's career has been terminated and he is forced to go to ground as the president bows to pressure from a ruthless senator with her sights set on the White House. But when the tide in the war on terror suddenly turns against the U.S., the president has no choice but to secretly bring Harvath back inside.

Ducking a congressional subpoena, Harvath travels to the Mediterranean, where he learns of a shadowy organization that has been combing the earth for decades in search of the ultimate weapon to use against the United States and her allies.

Now, after three summers of record-setting heat across present-day Europe, one steadily melting Alpine glacier has given up an ancient secret--one with the potential to thrust civilization back into the Dark Ages.

From Cyprus, London, and Paris, to Italy, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia, Harvath must race against the clock to stop one of the greatest evils ever to face the United States. With his characteristic high-voltage action, sweeping international locales, and meticulous research, Brad Thor has created another supercharged novel that is sure to thrill.

Editorial Review:

When a new NASA satellite spots evidence of an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory...a victory that has profound implications for U.S. space policy and the impending presidential election. With the Oval Office in the balance, the President dispatches White House Intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton to the Milne Ice Shelf to verify the authenticity of the find. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic academic Michael Tolland, Rachel uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery -- a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy.

But before Rachel can contact the President, she and Michael are attacked by a deadly team of assassins controlled by a mysterious power broker who will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Fleeing for their lives in an environment as desolate as it is lethal, their only hope for survival is to find out who is behind this masterful ploy. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.

In his most thrilling novel to date, bestselling author Dan Brown transports readers from the ultrasecret National Reconnaissance Office to the towering ice shelves of the Arctic Circle, and back again to the hallways of power inside the West Wing. Heralded for masterfully intermingling science, history, and politics in his critically acclaimed thriller Angels & Demons, Brown has crafted another novel in which nothing is as it seems -- and behind every corner is a stunning surprise. Deception Point is pulse-pounding fiction at its best.
