Editorial Review:

This is not simply the memoir of a cancer survivor. Nor is it just the memoir of a respected senator. This is an unprecedented glimpse into a man who is both. It is inspiration for people of all political persuasions; of how to persevere and succeed---despite what the doctors may say, despite what the tests might show.

In early 2004, Senator Specter was in the midst of a grueling primary race, facing significant opposition from the right as he worked to win his party’s nomination to run for reelection for his Pennsylvania senate seat. It would be the most difficult election in his quarter-century career in the Senate. Following on its heels were two more challenges---the general-election race and opposition to his elevation as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, his lifelong ambition. He overcame all three challenges in time for his seventy-fifth birthday.

But exhaustion and fatigue---initially thought to be the aftereffects of months of vigorous campaigning---were found to be far more serious. After a series of tests and consultation with several doctors, Specter was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, Stage IVB, the most advanced stage.

He had received death sentences before and lived to tell about it. To Senator Specter, this diagnosis was another challenge. After all, he still had a job to do.

His cancer treatments came as he reached the height of his power---surrounded by political storms that polarized Washington and threatened to shut the Senate down. His leadership positions made it his job to manage Supreme Court nominations and public- health appropriations as he faced his own illness. He had fought on public-health issues for years, but now it added potency to the message that the messenger was ailing himself.

The phrase “Never give in” became Specter’s mantra, invoking the famous words from Churchill in his battle with cancer. This moving book describes the treatment the Senator received and offers his advice on how to handle the side effects (both visible and private), hair loss, and of course, maintain a nearly daily squash regimen. So, how does one move forward when faced with mortality? It’s simple. Work.

"Never Give In brims with the singular tenacity and humor that have characterized Arlen Specter's nearly thirty years in the United States Senate. This book is both an entertaining read and an unflinching account of the experience of fighting an intensely personal battle on a highly public stage."---Michael J. Fox

"Working with Arlen for many years on the Senate Judiciary Committee, I have witnessed firsthand his spirited battles on the political stage. Even while confronting his physical trials, Senator Specter continued to be a great asset to Pennsylvania, the Senate, and our country. Highlighted by insight that only Arlen could provide, Never Give In portrays a life of courage and fortitude." ---Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT)

"Understanding Arlen Specter's steely endurance is a key to understanding his success in the Senate and in life. Look up tenacity in the dictionary and you'll find Arlen's picture. Trial by fire has tempered him and made him stronger, and wiser."-- Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT, Chairman, Senate Judiciary Committee)

“Written in Senator Specter’s trademark candor, Never Give In is a compelling tale of survival – both personal and political – from one of the Senate’s most independent voices. Riding the train home with him now for almost 25 years, I count Arlen among my closest friends in the Senate. The words courageous and inspiring hardly do him justice – but trust me, he is both.”-- Senator Joe Biden (D-DE)

“I’ve been privileged to work side by side with Arlen for over 18 years. While I respect his intelligence and honesty, and value his friendship, perhaps most of all I have admired his toughness in the face of adversity. He just never gives up.”—Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA)

Proposes Iodine as Prevention and Treatment for Breast Cancer 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Breast Cancer and Iodine by David Derry MD PhD, is a unique 100 page volume which presents the academic case for iodine as prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The book should be handed out freely during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although written for the lay reader, it should be required reading for all medical students, breast surgeons, mammographers, breast cancer oncologists and any doctor who orders mammograms.

With ten pages of medical references including the work of B A Eskin and W R Ghent, Dr. Derry discloses the remarkable connection between iodine deficiency, fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer. Iodine's anti-cancer activity lies in its control of apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

Derry presents case studies complete with surgical pathology confirmation showing regression of both fibrocystic breast disease and carcinoma-in-situ breast cancer with iodine treatment. He also presents a case report case of infiltrating breast cancer involving the skin which regressed after prolonged application of topical Lugol's iodine solution.

I can report from the experience of my own family members that iodine supplementation causes regression of fibrocystic breast disease.

Derry's ideas in the book could be easily revised into an NIH grant proposal to research and confirm the role of iodine. To do so would advance the nation's health and be a great public service. Iodine is safe, inexpensive and readily available without a prescription. A US policy of iodine supplementation matching the Japanese dietary intake of iodine could very well be our best preventive measure against breast cancer.

Jeffrey Dach MD

Editorial Review:

This book is about cause, prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Breast cancer has two phases. The first one, from abnormal cells up to carcinoma in situ reverses with iodine. The second phase, invasion, is controlled by connective tissue thyroid hormone.

Not For The Mob 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book is written for biologists, chemists, physicists, all manner of graduated doctors, allopathic and holistic. It requires knowledge of the inability of allopathic medicine to explain origins of life. It is a deep think, and an opening to a true paradigm shift in understanding the foundation of health. A fabulous book, only to be superceded by "Jubbs Cell Rejuvenation" (2006).

Editorial Review:

This book provides a scientific explanation for cancer through an analysis of the blood. The Jubbs explain how LifeFood nutrition—a diet rich in vegetarian foods found wild in nature and served uncooked—can detoxify and rejuvenate the body. Included are four herbal formulas for making colloidal medicines for proper hydration. These alkaline beverages can be readily absorbed to purify "dirty blood"—acidic and full of toxins—making the body inhospitable to cancer. Secrets of an Alkaline Body is informatively illustrated and includes testimonials from clients who have successfully cleared cancer from their bodies using the Jubbs' techniques.

Editorial Review:

A memorable trio of characters, each fighting for independence

Eleven-year-old Toby Steiner wants to do normal things on his vacation: he wants to hike and race his bike down the hill and learn to fish out on the lake. The last thing he wants is to return to the children’s hospital where his painful cancer treatment finally ended. When Toby starts spending time with Pearl, a spunky old woman who lives on a nearby farm, and Blossom, her broken-down cow, he sees all the more reason to keep the new lump on his side a secret from his parents. From Pearl he discovers the beauty of poetry, and from Blossom he just might uncover the meaning of life.

In this honest and life-affirming novel for young readers, which Suzanne Fisher Staples, author of the Newbery Honor Book Shabanu, calls “beautiful and gripping,” an unforgettable boy learns about the importance of letting things happen on their own and listening to his heart.

A Healthy and Honest Glimpse Into Real World 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Geralyn Lucas was 27 years old when doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer. Her career was in high gear. Her marriage to a young physician was solid. Her hopes of one day having a baby were ever-present. The last thing she expected to hear was that she had a diagnosis that she equated with only older women--breast cancer.

The 27 year old was a graduate from Columbia University School of Journalism and had secured a position as the editorial producer for ABC News' popular 20/20 show. She hadn't bargained for breast cancer to threaten her career, her hopes of becoming a mother, or her life. But that is exactly what happened.

In her poignant and refreshingly honest book, Lucas shares her emotional rollercoaster, her physical ups and downs and her walk through the treatment phases of her disease. Complete with the issues of chemotherapy side effects, reconstructive surgery, and marital strains, this book is gut-wrenchingly honest in its portrayal of a life turned upside down and inside out at the pronouncement of a life-threatening disease. It is also a totally life-affirming reflection on how one woman faced down the monster that is called breast cancer.

From 'victim' to 'survivor' to 'advocate' Geralyn Lucas walks us through the maze of a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. While her focus is on the younger population with this diagnosis, this book is a healthy and honest glimpse into the real world of any woman who is dealing with the disease--and for anyone who is helping her deal with it--at any stage. Newly diagnosed women will be inspired, those going through treatment will nod in agreement, those who are disease free will applaud her work with survivors' groups, and family members will thank her for allowing them to peek into what might be going on inside their own loved one's head during the whole process. Geralyn voices for all women what most women do not dare to admit--their own fear, their vulnerability, their ambivilence.

Readers will cheer when she defiantly yet confidently swipes her lips with lipstick as she prepares to enter the operating room. They will continue to cheer as she returns time and time again to her source of feminine power and courage--her lipstick--to remind her of the hope and promise she carries deep within.

This is a must read for anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. Having read many books on the topic, I can honestly say that this is by far, one of the most candid and uplifting. Geralyn has become my heroine for she is a champion of the feminine powers in all of us!

After seven years as the editorial producer for 20/20, Geralyn became the director of original programming for Lifetime Television. She is a member of Lifetime's Stop Breast Cancer for Life initiative. She, her husband Tyler and daughter Skye (born after her cancer treatments) live in New York City. She is said to never leave home without her lipstick.

As if the wonderfully inspiring story is not reason enough to go out and purchase the book for yourself or someone you love, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book are donated to the Young Survival Coalition.

Editorial Review:

NOW A LIFETIME ORIGINAL MOVIE PREMIERING IN OCTOBER!
Having recently graduated from Columbia Journalism School and landed her dream job at 20/20, the last thing 27-year-old Geralyn expects to hear is a breast cancer diagnosis. And there is one part of the diagnosis that no one will discuss with her: what it means to be a young girl with cancer in a beauty-obsessed culture. Trying to find herself, while losing her vibrancy and her looks, Geralyn embarks on a road to self-acceptance that will inspire all women. Although her book is explicitly about a period of time where she was driven by fear and uncertainty about the future, Geralyn managed a transformation that will encourage all women under siege to discover their own courage and beauty. The important and outrageous lessons of Why I Wore Lipstick come fast and furious with the same gusto that Geralyn has learned to bring to every moment of her life.

A big help after a scary diagnosis 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Chemotherapy and Radiation for Dummies was the first resource I turned to after getting my cancer diagnosis, and it helped me quell the fear and begin to understand what was ahead of me. The book is well-organized so that you can pick and choose the chapters you need when you need them. As a breast cancer survivor, Patricia Corrigan writes with authority, compassion, and humor. The book told me what I needed to know about the chemo drugs I'd be taking and their side effects along with very practical information such as how to take care of my teeth during treatment. I continue to refer back to it when a new issue arises. I've recommended it to other patients and they've found it helpful, too.

Editorial Review:

An informative, compassionate guide for cancer patients and their loved ones
Each year, more than 1 million people get treated for cancer, and most of these will undergo chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both. This reassuring, optimistic guide helps people get a handle on treatment options and explains in plain English how chemotherapy and radiation therapy really work. It offers detailed advice on how to alleviate and cope with side effects-which range from hair loss to nausea to anemia-and describes how good nutrition, meditation, support groups, and other techniques and resources can help in the recovery process.

Another One of God's Natural Cures 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I believe Grapes is another one of God's great healing foods. I read the book many years ago and have always thought about what I read. Now once again the book is making a come back. Drugs don't heal, only alleviate symptoms. I know you need drugs in emergencies, but then study what's natural and try to heal your body that way. I believe grapes can clean out the toxins inside the body, but you must do a wholistic program for the grapes to be effective.
I say don't close your ears to the benefits of Grape Juice and just start incorporating it in your diet.

A few things to keep in mind; 5 out of 5 stars.

-Actual- science is a rarity. What is promoted as science in society is often deception: Research is conducted by supposed scientific groups that are actually owned by the product's manufacturer. Government organisations named to sound like protection offices,(Department of Agriculture), are actually in place to promote business. Results are simply not released when the results don't go the 'right' way, so what the public sees as proof may be the one time out of ten that insures the "scientist's" job security. Conclusions are often drawn that contradict the obviously real conclusions, with the understanding that most of us won't wade through the technical jargon. My point is that "anecdotal evidence" , so maligned by the supposed scientists, is a whole different matter when it's YOUR anecdote. I'm witnesss to benign skin tumors dissolving,(for lack of a better word), on diets similar to the Grape Cure. Yes, going too long would be a mistake, but a couple of weeks on fruits only, during the warmer months, is certainly less harmful than ANY alternative offered by the 'proven' methods of the medical community. If you want be a 'Quackwatcher', the first thing you need to 'watch' is the 'Quackwatchers' themselves, where hidden motives abound.

Diana Dyer is a Good Teacher 5 out of 5 stars.
35 of 36 people found this review helpful.

This would be a very helpful book for anyone who wants to improve her or his nutrition, regardless of whether they have cancer or not. The author starts out by teaching the reader how to have a well balanced diet - information everyone needs to know. One of the things I like best about the book is that she acknowledges that research on nutrition and cancer is incomplete, but then goes on to discuss how to include foods that have been shown to be possibly helpful in preventing cancer. The book is packed with useful information and helpful hints to make the dietary changes easier and more enjoyable. Reviewed by Patricia J. Anderson, MN, RN, Editor: Breast Cancer News, Author, Breast Cancer: A Patient Guide

Editorial Review:

The 2002 edition of this very popular book has a beautiful new cover and both new and revised up-to-date information for all people diagnosed with cancer. The author is a Registered Dietitian who is also a 3-time cancer survivor (a childhood cancer, neuroblastoma, and breast cancer in 1984 and then1995). In her book, she shares both information and inspiration from her personal cancer recovery journey after her most recent diagnosis in 1995, in which she combined conventional cancer therapy with nutritional changes and many complementary medicine therapies.

I am a survivor! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I can't say enough good words about this book or its contents. It was given to me as a gift from a friend after I had already undergone treatments. I try to make sure I give it to friends either before or during treatments. I don't want them to waste a minute dwelling in a negative mindset. This book teaches wonderful lessons about how to train yourself to have a positive and incredibly uplifting outlook on your illness.

I am still ordering copies as, unfortunately, the need increases. The fact that it is written by a man and from a man's perspective has helped many of my male friends to be more open to reading it. That is yet another postive.

I hope you also find value in this books contents.

It is very uplifting, inspiring and wonderful. I am sorry that it is out of print, but it seems Mr. Anderson has written a sequel and others. Thank you Mr. Anderson. JBartram

Editorial Review:

First published in 1980, this new edition brings together posthumous tributes to Lorde from such writers and poets as Margaret Randall, Jewelle Gomez, and Barbara Smith, among others. The forthrightness and ferocity with which Audre Lorde greeted every social injustice is in full force in this courageous exploration of her breast cancer and mastectomy. Using the journal, memoir, and essay forms, Lorde gives voice to her "feelings and thoughts about the travesty of prosthesis, the pain of amputation, the function of cancer in a profit economy, confrontation with mortality, the strength of women loving, and the power and rewards of self-conscious living." Lorde powerfully weaves together the three literary forms, allowing her to leap from raw expressions of pain to her inimitably astute social observations.

Lorde began writing her journal entries six months after her radical mastectomy; they illustrate her process of integrating the crisis into her life, retelling her experience from detection to follow-up therapies. Lorde's most passionate battle was waged against silence. "This is it, Audre," Lorde wrote. "You're on your own." Where was the model? she asked, seeking another voice to speak to her experience. In The Cancer Journals, Audre Lorde has given us a rich, powerful model that is, alas, still relevant.
