I read this book the night before my sister's first visit to her oncologist for treatment of lymphoma. Then I gave it to her.

It helps to make the incomprehensible a little easier to understand. The day of my sister's last radiation visit, she gave it to a mother of a 16-year-old brain cancer patient. She urged her to pass it on when she was finished with it.

I recently bought another copy of Chemo and Radiation for Dummies through Amazon for a friend whose daughter has ovarian cancer. She and her family were so appreciative.

The niche bestseller "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" begins with the shooting of a urologist and includes a World War II Battle. The book exposes the big lie about radical prostate surgery, is filled with cartoons and simple diagrams, and is written for the average layperson in easy-to-understand style. "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes Dr. Gary Onik, M.D., Cryosurgeon and Director of Surgical Imaging at Celebration Health Hospital, Celebration, Florida, who says: "I expect that within five years we will see the death of the radical prostatectomy as a treatment for prostate cancer." The author, Bradley Hennenfent, M.D., has seen five uncles suffer from prostate cancer and his book includes many uplifting stories about less harmful treatments than surgery. Dr. Hennenfent also explains the problem of lies, damn lies, and prostate cancer statistics. The adverse effects of surgery: impotence, sexual dysfunction, incontinence, and urethral strictures are explained in realistic fashion. The Best Book About Breast Cancer 5 out of 5 stars.

We give this book to surgeons in our area to distribute to women diagnosed with breast cancer. Before purchasing it, we had a group of 4 breast cancer survivors review and rate 3 separate books on breast cancer. This book "won" hands down, based on numerous criteria -- everything from its explanation of breast cancer treatments, to its index and glossary, to its discussion of life after cancer. It is clear and easy to read, provides comprehensive information on types of breast cancer and corresponding treatment alternatives, has wonderful graphics and photos, and provides interesting anecdotal stories of actual patients in its sidebar. Highly recommended!

As a radiology resident in a very busy county hospital, I have all that I can do to keep up with the workload, much less find time for academic reading. Prior to the 1999 in-service examination, I read the ACR syllabus and Cardenosa's "Breast Imaging Companion."

The combination of these two texts served me well, as I scored in the 100th percentile on the breast imaging section. Cardenosa's book is concise, filled with both "classic" and atypical images. It is a rapid read, while maintaining a reasonably comprehensive level of dialogue.

I would reccomend it to anyone learning mammography for the first time and, furthermore, I would recommend that you keep it nearby, as you will refer to it frequently for troubleshooting in this difficult field.
