This verse unlocks the heart. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Terry Tempest Williams is a national treasure. Her unvarnished verse carries one deep into the mystery of the Earth and sends us helplessly into the depths of our own hearts. The landscape of wildness breaths a spectacular wisdom under the watchful eyes of this keen observer of wind, rock, desert, sky, sage, along with the birds who soar and dance and play in a benediction to non-sentient life.

When I need to recapture my own mortality along with my own humility, I always return to the verse of this elder of silence and truth. Williams stands alone in the power to convey both outer and inner wildness. Her verse is poetic and healing. One does not read these words but are instead initiated into the heart beat of wild nature. Savor its beauty as you might a calming sunset or a wind swept sea shore calling you ever deeper into your own soul.

Read everything she writes and find peace deep within.

Editorial Review:

In the spring of 1983 Terry Tempest Williams learned that her mother was dying of cancer. That same season, The Great Salt Lake began to rise to record heights, threatening the herons, owls, and snowy egrets that Williams, a poet and naturalist, had come to gauge her life by. One event was nature at its most random, the other a by-product of rogue technology: Terry's mother, and Terry herself, had been exposed to the fallout of atomic bomb tests in the 1950s. As it interweaves these narratives of dying and accommodation, Refuge transforms tragedy into a document of renewal and spiritual grace, resulting in a work that has become a classic.

Money Makes the Zoo Go 'Round.... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We Bought A Zoo is subtitled: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Changed Their Lives Forever

Given that, the story takes a little time to get off the ground. We find the author, a free-lance writer, living in rural southern France with his wife & two children and refinishing two dirt-floor stone barns. When word comes through his sister that a dilapidated zoo in the English countryside is for sale, the author & his extended family takes action to purchase it. This is not an easy endeavor and the business details fill the first quarter of the book. Note also that a BBC film crew got wind of the endeavour and asked to film the process.

The thing is, I don't think I'd like Benjamin Mee if I met him in person. He uprooted his family once, by selling their beloved flat in London to move to his personal idyll in France, and then again, back to England because, after all, HE'D always wanted to own a zoo and now his French dream wasn't what he wanted after all. On both occasions, he overrode his wife Katherine. This was especially appalling to me the second time because Katherine was newly diagnosed with a brain tumour & receiving (excellent) treatment in France. The fact that his (possibly) dying wife wasn't enthused about this new venture didn't faze him a bit.

In addition, although Mee has experienced staff and certified professionals advising him, he ignores their advice in serious decisions at least twice that he reports. In both cases, things ended up favorably but, rather than be grateful for twists of fate that may have affected the situations, he boasts and struts.

But the story? Animal lovers, once you get past the purchase transaction, there's plenty of goodies for you amidst the details of the continuing financial issues, grim living conditions (for the family), and Katherine's disease and eventual death.

Imagine the day staff moved Tammy the tiger without proper restraint precaution, only to have the beast gain consciousness as they moved her. Mee describes the situation as being "beyond fear, to total calm". But the fear lingered when, sometime later, Mee & his brother are startled by a large animal moving behind them while checking some reservoir pipes, & spring to defend their lives - against the neighbor's cow. I believe they were less afraid when one of their younger wolves was running loose through the nearest town. And there is an amusing exposé: what happens "When Porcupines Go Bad".

Perhaps the most likable animal in the zoo was Zak, the elderly alpha wolf, who "maintained his grip on the pack now, not with brute force, but through sheer charisma and experience." The account of his surgery to save him from testicular cancer will be a source of angst among male readers and of glee to the women.

Mee's account of the peacock - which he evidently disdains - as a dumb, evolutionary mistake, is humorous. It also amuses me that Mee can describe the wonders of these animals and their behaviours and personalities and make attribution every time to the marvel of evolution, to the point, by his own admission, that it "[made] evolution sound (almost) like a religion".

That these creatures are so intelligently made, with abilities beyond what are needed for survival, and so varied is surely evidence of a designer, a creator. And since, according to Mee, the peacock (named, so he postulates, for the size of its brain), has that marvelous tail that is so "evolutionarily expensive", it really should be extinct by that theory. The last time I checked on the world's peacock population, that wasn't the case.

I would have loved to see more photographs of the animals Mee brings to life in his stories, but the colour pictures included are disappointing. Nearly half are of their project in France, and the ones of the animals include many that are not named in the book, and exclude many that are.

I really did learn a tremendous amount, though, about the running of a zoo. It's a highly regulated & examined business - and an almost unmaginably expensive one to run. The money and the struggle to get it, manage it & plan for making it, are a major part of the book. And, animal lovers with the same dream, please note that, despite the months of Herculean effort by Mee, his family & his staff, the zoo would not have succeeded financially if the BBC (whose film crew had been on location for those many months) had not run the four-part television series Titles "Ben's Zoo" in November of their opening year. That brought more paying visitors and made endless opportunities for additional moneymaking venues such as this book. Without that, the zoo would have closed, broke, after the first summer and the animals would have been disperse. In other words, "Kids, don't try this at home!"

Should you read it? Even though I personally dislike the author, he does write well and the book held my attention from beginning to end. There are no bogged down bits - it's all moving forward. If you like animals or are interested in learning about the world of zoos, then by all means - read it & enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Benjamin Mee decided to uproot his family and move them to an unlikely new home: a dilapidated zoo on the English countryside, complete with over 200 exotic animals. It was his dream to refurbish the zoo and run it as a family business. There was much work to be done, and none of it easy. Tigers broke loose, money ran low, the staff grew skeptical, and family tensions ran high. Then tragedy struck. His wife had a recurrence of a brain tumor, forcing Benjamin and his children to face the heartbreak of illness and the devastating loss of a wife and mother. But inspired by her memory and the healing power of the incredible family of animals they had grown to love, Benjamin and his kids resovled to move forward. The Mee family opened the gates of the revitalized zoo in July 2007.

Editorial Review:

An advice-from-the-trenches cancer survival guidebook for young women with cancer.

Actress and photographer Kris Carr thought she had a hangover, but a Jivamukti yoga class didn't provide its usual kick-ass cure. A visit to her doctor confirmed her "liver looked like Swiss cheese," covered with cancerous tumors. She entered trench warfare (wearing cowboy boots into the MRI machine, no less), vowing, "Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!" She began writing and filming her journey, documenting her interactions with friends, doctors, alternative "quacks," blind dates, and other women with cancer--sadly a growing group. These include hip, young women such as illustrator-author Marisa Acocella Marchetto (Cancer Vixen), Glamour writer-editor Erin Zammett (My So-Called Normal Life), MTV personality Diem Brown (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), model Sharon Blynn (founder, Bald Is Beautiful), and music manager Jackie Farry, among others.

The Learning Channel is broadcasting the premiere of Carr's unforgettable documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer on August 29, 2007 @ 9:00-11:00pm (ET/PT).

CRAZY SEXY CANCER TIPS gathers the lessons learned and advice offered from Carr's own journey, as well as the experiences of her cancer posse. Full-color photos accompany personal stories and candid revelations in this scrapbook of advice, warnings, and resources for the cancer patient. Chapters cover your changing social life, dating, sex, and appearance; essential health tips on how to boost your immune system; recipes; medical and holistic resources; and information on young survivor support groups. The resulting book is a warm, yet informative tool for any woman newly diagnosed with the disease and for those who love them.

Easy to Follow and Delicious Recipes! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I love this cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow and delicious, believe it or not! Rebecca Katz's philosophy is to experience not only nourishment (so important for those dealing with cancer) but also enjoyment from food. She provides lots of friendly and helpful commentary on the recipes; it feels as if she is cooking right alongside me. I've been having fun cooking and eating again thanks to the delicious recipes like Chicken ... Roasted All The Way to Yum!, Anytime Crunch, Flourless Almond Torte, and Parmesan Crisps. Tonight I'm going to make Dark Leafy Greens with Caramelized Onions, Raisins, and Pine Nuts (hey if ya gotta eat greens, might as well make 'em sweet). I lent the book to my friend, an Acupuncturist, and now she's planning on buying a copy for herself.

Editorial Review:

Chef Rebecca Katz shares delicious, nourishing recipes with people who need food the most: cancer patients. Dietary restrictions, as well as damaged taste buds from cancer treatments, turn many patients off food, but Katz reinvigorates the appetite through immune-building, sumptuous meals. These recipes use ingredients that support and bolster the immune system, are easy to digest, and taste wonderful. Supporting chapters help loved ones understand the culinary ups and downs that patients experience.

Editorial Review:

A provocative, funny, and whip- smart memoir of how one man learned to find joy in his own life after years of hand-to-hand combat with death.

Actor and author Evan Handler’s new book, It’s Only Temporary, is both a deeply personal memoir and a series of meditations on life, love, faith, gratitude, and mortality. In closely examining his own triumphs, mistakes, and less-than-ideal relationships since his miraculous recovery from a supposedly incurable leukemia more than twenty years ago, Handler zeroes in on the most profound question facing every human being: How can a person live well with the knowledge that time is limited? In doing so, Handler has created a poignant and wildly funny rumination on the ironies of human existence.

Structured as a collection of incisive and probing autobiographical stories , It’s Only Temporary is a startlingly candid portrait of one man’s struggle to find love and happiness within a life he knows he’s lucky just to have. By turns hilarious and heart-wrenching, blunt and shocking, Handler’s defiantly unconventional memoir ultimately succeeds as both a stirring love story and a classic coming-of-age tale. It’s Only Temporary celebrates the transformation from boy to man—even if it took Handler more than forty years to get there.

He gives the truth, just not the whole truth 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

At first I liked this book. And then I was thrown a loop in life and my toddler developed intolerances to gluten, casein, and soy. It forced me to reconsider what healthy eating is.

I will start by reviewing the recipes in the book. I have only tried a handful and have met with little to no success. Either the recipe didn't work or my unpicky children would not eat it. For my family the meals were not balanced enough. I'm sure he would be unhappy to know that I had to add "meat" to his recipes for them to work.

He does give many truths in the book. For example, red meat causes cancer. He does not give the whole truth however. It is undigested red meat. Rather than suggesting you fully cook your meat and eat it in moderation he goes to an extreme. Every person is different. My family needs a lot more meat and substance in our diet to be happy and healthy. We are not bad people for it and not unhealthy as he would lead you to believe.

There are several extremist diets out there. This is the opposite extreme as Atkins but an extreme none the less. I would suggest reading Michael Pollan instead. This diet will work for a few I'm sure. But it will leave many unsatisfied.

Every mom knows in her heart what is best for her family. You do not need Dr. Joel Fuhrman to tell you. Listen to your heart and, to quote Pollan, "eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables."

Editorial Review:

A groundbreaking book that explains the connection between nutrition and disease prevention-showing parents how to keep their children healthy by feeding them right B ombarded by the media with stories about childhood obesity and dangerous hormones, pesticides and additives in foods, and told that allergies, asthma, and ear infections are on the rise, parents have never been more concerned about what to feed children. In this invaluable resource, featuring easy-toprepare, tasty recipes, Dr. Joel Fuhrman explains how cuttingedge nutritional science can be brought to the family table with amazing results.

Editorial Review:

Cancer can now be cured, not just treated! We are not accustomed to thinking about a cure for cancer. We think of remission as the only possibility. But this book is not about remission. It is about a cure. This is possible because in 1990 Dr. Clark discovered the true cause of cancer. The cause is a certain parasite, for which I have found evidence in every cancer case regardless of the type of cancer. So lung cancer is not caused by smoking, colon cancer is not caused by a low roughage diet, breast cancer is not caused by a fatty diet, retinal blastoma is not caused b y a rare gene, and pancreatic cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. Although these are all contributing factors, they are not THE cause. Once the true cause was found the cure became obvious. but would it work? I set a goal of 100 cases to be cured of cancer before publishing my findings. That mark was passed in December 1992. The discovery of the cause and cure of all cancers has stood the test of time and here it is!

Editorial Review:

If you're concerned about the "C" word, then the first thing you need to know is that cancer does NOT have to be a death sentence! There is hope! There are many potent and well-proven alternative strategies for preventing, treating, and even curing cancer... without surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation (i.e. the "Big 3"). Inside this book, you will find a wealth of information that your doctor probably doesn't know. Here's why: while at medical school, doctors not only receive biased information but also learn a very drug-intensive style of medicine. As a result, most doctors are still thinking "inside the box" when it comes to cancer. The "cancer box" is largely the creation of multinational pharmaceutical companies attempting to peddle their poisons (such as chemotherapy) in an effort to increase shareholder profits. Sadly, these profits are generated at the expense of cancer patients. Cancer - Step Outside the Box succinctly explains the facts and deceptions about cancer and cancer treatments, it documents multiple cases of persecution and suppression of effective cancer treatments, it details the most potent of the Stage IV and Stage III cancer treatment protocols, and it clearly explains the relationship between nutrition and cancer.
