Editorial Review:

Claire and her mother are running out of time, but they don't know it. Not yet. Claire is wrapped up with the difficulties of her bourgeoning adulthood—boys, school, friends, identity; Claire's mother, a single mom, is rushed off her feet both at work and at home. They rarely find themselves in the same room at the same time, and it often seems that the only thing they can count on are notes to each other on the refrigerator door. When home is threatened by a crisis, their relationship experiences a momentous change. Forced to reevaluate the delicate balance between their personal lives and their bond as mother and daughter, Claire and her mother find new love and devotion for one another deeper than anything they had ever imagined.

Heartfelt, touching, and unforgettable, Life on the Refrigerator Door is a glimpse into the lives of mothers and daughters everywhere. In this deeply touching novel told through a series of notes written from a loving mother and her devoted fifteen-year-old daughter, debut author Alice Kuipers deftly captures the impenetrable fabric that connects mothers and daughters throughout the world. Moving and rich with emotion, Life on the Refrigerator Door delivers universal lessons about love in a wonderfully simple and poignant narrative.

Striking continuation of food-fest/allegorical galcommentary 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Following on the tremendously sensual roast-beef scene in Zami, Lourde here rejects beef after coming to terms with the oppressive white system that probably imposed hormone-ridden substandard products on people of colour. I think this is very brave. I'd like to propose that in memory of Lourde all self-respecting womyn reject mass-produced beef products. A great book. And very eye-opening.

Editorial Review:

"Grief, terror, courage, the passion for survival and for more than survival, are here in the searchings of a great poet."-Adrienne Rich

"This book teaches me that with one breast or none, I am still me."-Alice Walker

"The forthrightness and ferocity with which Audre Lorde greeted every social injustice is in full force in this courageous exploration."-Amazon.com

Moving between journal entry, memoir, and exposition, Audre Lorde fuses the personal and political as she reflects on her experience coping with breast cancer and a radical mastectomy. Includes photos and tributes to Lorde written after her death in 1992.

Personal success stories to give you courage 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 30 people found this review helpful.

A cancer diagnosis usually frightens the patient. This book is very valuable to build courage. Many of these 50 people describe their own fear at various stages of recovery. But what they have in common is that they "took charge of their own health care." In most cases, they got a negative prognosis from a conventional cancer doctor (oncologist). But they sought out second and third opinions until they found a doctor, clinic and/or a combination of substances that worked.

These obviously unedited descriptions are gripping and convincing because they are in the patient's own words. Many of them (about 20) used some form of the Gerson Therapy. There are much easier and less expensive treatments available now. One doesn't have to go to Mexico anymore to get competent treatment from physicians using Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). So, a cancer patient should not look to this book to find the optimum treatment or clinic. That is not its purpose. Read it for the inspiration that every cancer patient needs.

Editorial Review:

This unique book contains 50 inspiring stories, all of them written by the cancer survivors themselves. The stories cover all ages, many types of cancer (see the table of contents for all types covered) and numerous treatments, mostly focusing on alternative methods. All of them are different but generally include:

1. How they were diagnosed.
2. What they went through after the diagnosis and how they coped with it.
3. How they healed themslves and what they felt was the most effective part.
4. Advice they would give others going through the same thing.

As a bonus, contact information is also included so any of the survivors may be personally contacted for questions or support. This book is a great read for anyone, whether they’ve been diagnosed with cancer or not.

Editorial Review:

You know people like me. I'm the one who sat in a folding chair out in the hall selling tickets to the prom but never going, the one everybody liked but no one wanted to be with.

A self-anointed spinster at fifty-one, Myra Lipinsky has endured the isolation of her middle life by doting on her dog, Frank, and immersing herself in her career as a visiting nurse. Myra considers herself reasonably content, telling herself, It's enough, work and Frank. And it has been enough -- until Chip Reardon, the too-good-to-be-true golden boy she adored from afar, is assigned to be her new patient. Choosing to forgo invasive treatment for an incurable illness, Chip has returned from Manhattan to the New England home of his childhood to spend what time he has left. Now, Myra and Chip find themselves engaged in a poingnant redefinition of roles, and a complicated dance of memory, ambivalence, and longing.

From the author whose work The New Yorker calls "strong" and "timeless" comes a wry and beautifully distilled portrait of one woman's resilience in the face of loneliness, and of a union that transcends life's most unexpected and challenging circumstances. With effortless warmth, and loving respect for characters that defies easy sentiment, Never Change melds the emotional depth and gentle intensity of poetry with the rich satisfactions of finely wrought fiction.

TEN stars for this one! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let me ask you something - what does a biker chick stompin' in the House of God have to do with you? She's your mother, your daughter, your sister-friend, your wife ---- she walked that journey many of us dread. Breast cancer. She's classy, she's elegant, she's tender-hearted, she's eloquent, and she's composed. Yep, she's a biker chick who wrote a book with a powerful GENTLE impact. I challenge you to read it and try NOT to share a copy with all the women you love. We all joke about mammograms, just as we sit trembling in the waiting room before our appointments, surrounded by booklets and walls lined with BREAST CANCER information. We are afraid to even look at the literature. We just want to get in and OUT of there, scot-free, as quickly as possible. Mary got caught. If you are reading this, you know someone who's been there and you've prayed it will never be you. You've been at a complete loss for words when someone you love gets the terrifying news. Why is this book good? Mary J. Nelson most definitely has The WORDS. She's a genius and genuine article. A victorious survivor who hands down, knows exactly what to say and what to do in a fight for your life. If you've already read this book, then the good news is, there's a sequel! "GRACE FOR TOUGH TIMES: Keys to Hope, Comfort, & Encouragement". Trouble is, Mary's joy is catchy - don't read these books if you'd rather mope! Grab a tissue, prepare to be touched, moved, encouraged and dazzled. You've NEVER met a biker chick quite like this one ... but you know what, I'm sure glad I did! Be Blessed! **

Editorial Review:

Mary J. Nelson writes to women like herself who are traveling through the breast cancer journey. This book will be a companion for those women beginning with the diagnosis, then through treatment, and then looking at life as a cancer survivor. The short devotional readings encourage, support, and comfort as they point the woman toward God, helping her grow, not just cope, during this difficult experience. The ideal gift for the woman who has—or has overcome—breast cancer.

Can't transcribe heme-onc without it 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As with all of Stedman's word books, this is power-packed and indispensible. I transcribe for cancer clinics, among other clients, and the people at Stedman's do a great job in this specialty as with all of their word books. In addition to hundreds of pages of terms related to cancer and diseases of the blood, there is terrific cross-referencing, appendices with details on different staging and classification systems, names and addresses of many major cancer centers (alphabetized by state, excellent idea), chemo regimens alphabetized by diagnosis, etc.

You may also benefit from the good deal Amazon offers for pairing this with Stedmans' equally fine Radiology book, or, if you would prefer these on a CD, you will find a CD on this site that has the Oncology and Radiology books gathered onto one CD with images etc. I couldn't do my job without Stedman's.

Editorial Review:

Lists words and terms unique to the subject/specialty: procedures, techniques, abbreviations, drugs, tests, and equipment names. Offers A-Z listings of entries, cross-indexing, informative appendices, and much more. Previous edition: c1995. For medical transcriptionists and medical records personnel. Softcover.

Awesome 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This was one of the best books I have read in the course of my dissertation work. I'd say it is a must read for anyone in the health care profession, as well as patients battling chronic symptoms. The book is a reminder that we need to remember the PERSON who is the patient.

Education and Hope 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have helped train family practice physicians and I have used the play "W;T" to try and sensitize young physicians to the viewpoint of the patient. I was asked to read this book for a graduate course in spirituality and healing called: Suffering and Hope. I found it even better than "W;T" for training purposes. I think it should be required reading for all medical students and residents. Physicians are much more than just technicians trained to "fix" bodies. The viewpoint of the author was most helpful in suggesting ways to approach a very difficult situation. I have ordered copies for friends who are suffering from cancer that it may help them on their journey!

Editorial Review:

In this deeply affecting memoir, Arthur W. Frank explores the events of illness from within: the transformation from person to patient, the pain, the wonder, and the ceremony of recovery. To illuminate what illness can teach us about life, Frank draws upon his own encounters with serious illness -- a heart attack at age thirty-nine and, a year later, a diagnosis of cancer. In poignant and clear prose, he offers brilliant insights into what happens when our bodies and emotions are pushed to extremes. Ultimately, he examines what it means to be human.

Editorial Review:

Dan and Carmen have it all, it seems: They are young, rich, good-looking, satisfied in their work and love life, and are the parents of a beautiful three-year-old daughter. When Carmen is diagnosed with breast cancer, Dan is unable to cope with her illness and the changes this brings to their happy, yuppie family life. While the beautiful and optimistic Carmen submits to chemotherapy and eventually a mastectomy, hedonistic Dan tries to find solace with his buddies and in several flings before he finally stops running away and succeeds in supporting Carmen in her decision to end her life with dignity. Love Life is an account of a terminal illness that is devoid of glitz or fake sentiment. Distressing hospital situations and spot-on characterizations of doctors and therapists alternate with the many heart-wrenching moments through the course of Carmen’s illness, as both she and Dan come to terms with what commitment really means. Love Life is completely unapologetic, extremely controversial, but ultimately uplifting and life-affirming.

As women quickly discover, their life when treatment ends is very different from what it was before their diagnosis. Often exhausted, anxious, and emotionally volatile, they are beset by physical discomforts, fearful of intimacy, afraid for their children, worried about recurrence. There could be no more knowledgeable guide for women embarking on this complicated journey than Hester Hill Schnipper, who is herself both an experienced oncology social worker and a breast cancer survivor. This comprehensive handbook provides jargon-free information on the wide range of practical issues women face as they navigate the journey back to health, including:

•Managing physical problems such as fatigue, hot flashes, and aches and pains

•Handling relationships: your children, your partner, your parents, your friends.

•How to regain emotional and sexual intimacy

•Coping with financial and workplace issues

•Genetic testing: why, whether, when

•How to move beyond the fear of recurrence

•And much more

This indispensable book will help you rediscover your capacity for joy as you move forward into the future—as a survivor.
