Horribly Disappointed! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Don't get me wrong, "Harriet the Spy," was one of my all time favorite books (and movies), growing up. I'm almost 26 now and had always wanted to read "The Long Secret," So after re-reading Harriet, I went to the bookstore and ordered myself a copy. Well, at first it wasn't so bad, but there really wasn't any real point to the story. Harriet hadn't matured much at all, and to make matters worse, really offensive and hostile notes were left all over the place. I am also a Christian and find it offensive that the phrase "Jesus Hates You," should be allowed to be published in a Children's book. This is especially true in this day and age, when almost any threat has the potential to turn violent.

Skip this one.

Editorial Review:

Harriet the Spy refuses to become ruffled when an unidentified person starts leaving disturbing notes all over the quiet little beach town of Water Mill. She’s determined to discover the author of the notes. And she drags her friend, mousy Beth Ellen, into all kinds of odd and embarrassing situations in her efforts to reveal the culprit. Observing in her own special, caustic way with her ever-present notebook, Harriet the Spy is on the case. But will she be ready to face the truth when she finds it?

Heart Stopping---Wistfull---Breath Taking 5 out of 5 stars.

Honey has a twin brother, Sam, but it takes a picture following out of her photo-album and Dylan picking it up for her to tell Dylan, Lani, and Malory that she has a twin. Or she wouldn't have said anything. It all takes place after Thanksgiving break and but during break Honey had learned horrifing news about Sam. Who was sick for over a year and just when they were thinking he was going to get better the same illness came back. After Sam goes to the hospital Honey is even more determined not to tell her friends about Sam's illness. I'm not much for crying but when Honey was talking to her parents about how keeping her apart from Sam when he's in the hospital or at home was making her worry even more about her brother and how he's doing my eyes kept tearing up and I had to blink a lot so I could keep on reading. I suggest you read it, it's full of brotherly-sisterly love and hope, but LOL, you should read it as the series goes after the first two books: #1 The New Class and #2 Making Strides.

Editorial Review:

Spunky, vivacious Lani Hernandez is excited to be back at school with her friends and horses after winter break. Then Lani receives a letter from home: Her parents are concerned about her grades and want her to transfer to another school where the extracurriculars won't be as distracting. Upset but determined, Lani sets out to change her parents' minds. When she sprains her wrist riding, she's able to devote more time to studying -- until she gets involved in planning a charity event. If the event is a success, will Lani be able to convince her parents that Chestnut Hill is the place for her?

not what I hoped 3 out of 5 stars.

This book does have a lot of self-discovery experiments- in fact that's pretty much all it has. There isn't much information included to validate the experiments or to explain why they are significant to psychology. However, the book does refer you to other sources. I ordered the book, hoping to use it with my High School Gifted class but found that the text was a bit too juvenille. This book could be a good supplement to a psychology unit, but it is not something from which to teach.

Editorial Review:

Tired of wandering through the uncharted territory of guys and dating? Are you in need of the ultimate roadmap to this foreign landscape? Want to get pointed in the right direction by someone other than your mother or your trusty (but inexperienced) friend?

When it comes to guys, relationship expert Julie Taylor has all the answers -- and she'll give 'em to you straight. Think of her as an older sister (a fun older sister) who will tell it like it is, one who knows that you aren't a little kid anymore, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Julie will guide you through the highs and lows of a killer crush, help you conquer first-date jitters, advise you when it is time to promote him to official "boyfriend" status, reveal the realities of a summer fling, and more. Plus, each chapter ends with a quiz to help you determine the answers to a variety of questions essential for any girl with a one-way ticket to Guyville, such as:

Who's your dream date?
Is he second date material?
Are you ready to commit?
Is it time to give him the boot?

And if the stud turns out to be a dud, Julie preps you on when and how to dump him or how to survive when you're the one getting dumped. After all, they're just guys, and dating should be fun! So, read up....Next stop, Guyville!

This Chicken Soup Warmed my Soul 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: Journal, was one of the most moving books I have read. It is directed towards adolescents, and deals with issues every adolescent girl faces. It's a blend of stories, quotes, poems, and spaces to write your thoughts. This book has many different sections such as: family, learning lessons, love and kindness, and tough stuff. My favorite section, however, is "loving yourself". This book gave me a chance to deal with issues and see that I am not the only girl whom faces such issues. Chicken Soup is a book that I am able to pick up and at any time if I need some inspiration, help, or reassurance. Other issues helpful to me were on drinking, self-esteem, eating disorders, and how to deal with my past. Another good part about this book is that a lot of it is compiled with texts written by teenage authors. There are spaces for friends to write about you, and spaces for you to express how you feel on certain issues. Chicken Soup allowed me to realize I was not the only girl who had experienced some of the feelings I did. After reading this book I knew I wasn't alone! I do highly recommend this book to any teenage girl. Adolescence is a hard time to get through, and many girls need inspiration. You do not have to read the book cover to cover; you can pick it up any time and read whatever section you desire.

Editorial Review:

Filled with inspirational quotes, poetry, short stories written by other teens, fun graphics and lots of space for teens to express their own creativity and uniqueness, this book is a companion piece to the actual book. National print ads/reviews.

I think people should read Gooseberry Park because it is exciting. It was hard to put down.

If only all children's books were like this! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my favorite story to read aloud to my second grade students. The characters are so endearing! Ms. Rylant paints a beautiful picture of true friendship without being preachy. She also includes enough suspense to hold the reader's attention and enough humor to keep them smiling. I love to read it to my students in late fall/early winter because of the vivid descriptions of the ice storm and changing weather. We feel like we're right there with Kona, Stumpy, and Murray! A truly remarkable story.

Editorial Review:

Stumpy Squirrel has just settled into a new nest in a magnificent pin oak in Gooseberry Park. It’s the perfect spot for her babies to be born! When they arrive healthy and strong, Stumpy’s three good friends--a Labrador retriever, a wise hermit crab, and a bat who eats Chinese food--are thrilled. But after a terrible ice storm destroys the pin oak, Stumpy disappears. It takes a special combination of courage, humor, and tenacity for Stumpy’s friends to rescue her babies and bring her home again. “A tender tale delivered by a sure hand.”--Kirkus Reviews “Readers will relish every moment of this impeccably paced fantasy and its winning depictions of the unique perspectives and quandaries of four unlikely companions.”--Publishers Weekly

Teach Your Children 4 out of 5 stars.
43 of 44 people found this review helpful.

This is a book with a message that cannot be stressed enough. One major message that cannot be overemphasized is that abusers are NOT always strangers. Very young children are provided with tools of empowerment in this book and I like the direct way this serious topic of improper touching is addressed. While the illustrations are somewhat bland and lacking in color, that still does not detract from the book's main message.

I like the examples of unwelcome nonsexual touches such as enduring hugs and kisses from somebody the child either dislikes or does not know; unpleasant variations on "acceptable" touches, such as a hug that is too firm. Good or acceptable touch is explored, such as holding someone's hand and kissing someone you like/love. A good point about doctor examinations is given - although check ups are never pleasant, it is important to discuss with children why the doctor needs to examine every part of their bodies to ensure good health with no intention to hurt. That is a special case, but it still needs to be openly discussed.

Many children love to test out their new-found powers and in reading this to a group of young children and telling them to practice declaring refusal is very effective. It is also very empowering. Being loud with an abuser will undoubtedly get them to back off as predators do not want to attract attention to themselves.

The drawback is that it can be somewhat awkward to explain to a relative or other trusted adult such as a neighbor why your child refuses a hug and expresses dislike for it, but honoring the child's wishes is paramount. For example, there are numerous cases where children with autism find hugs too overwhelming because of sensory stimuli. The onslaught of sensory stimuli can be the feel of the hugger's clothing; cologne/perfume smells; feeling constricted and scratchy beards can make hugs far from pleasant or welcome. Many nonverbal autistic children who flee hugs can have this behavior explained in this manner. I knew one child who ran from a relative because the relative was loud and booming and known to swoop down on children with raucous displays of affection. The child found the noisy display frightening and annoying. From that child's perspective, the hugger's behavior looked like an attack. Although hugs have gotten good press over time, scant attention has been given to "unpleasant" hugs and the rights of people who don't want them. Then again there is the child's personality. There are people who are not overly fond of hugs and find them restrictive, and intrusive.

The words of David Crosby from 1969, "teach your children... give them a code which you can live by..." is a good summary of this book.

This is indeed an excellent book to help people protect their children from possible abuse, sexual or otherwise. It is non-threatening and having the child/children participate by adding their voices to the work make it all the more effective.

In addition to this book, I highly recommend Linda W. Girard's "My Body is Private;" Sandy Kleven's "The Right Touch: A Read Aloud to Help Prevent Child Sexual Abuse" and Cornelia Spelman's "Your Body Belongs to You" and Peter Alsop's excellent collection of songs entitled "Songs on Sex & Sexuality," most particularly the song entitled "My Body." These are all family geared and outstanding teaching tools that will certainly go far in creating a safer environment.

Editorial Review:

Preschool children learn safe boundaries, how to distinguish between "good" and "bad" touches, and how to respond appropriately to unwanted touches. This book is a powerful book for enhancing self-esteem. Parenting Press's bestseller!

I bought this book for my son as a gift. He says they are well written and thinks that it's a good insight into the minds dilemmas and real life situations of queer youth. Thank you Mr Sanchez for writing something thought provoking and caring for these often forgotten group of people! We have now purchased all of these books.

Editorial Review:

Jason Carrillo is a jock with a steady girlfriend, but he can't stop dreaming about sex...with other guys.

Kyle Meeks doesn't look gay, but he is. And he hopes he never has to tell anyone -- especially his parents.

Nelson Glassman is "out" to the entire world, but he can't tell the boy he loves that he wants to be more than just friends.

Three teenage boys, coming of age and out of the closet. In a revealing debut novel that percolates with passion and wit, Alex Sanchez follows these very different high-school seniors as their struggles with sexuality and intolerance draw them into a triangle of love, betrayal, and ultimately, friendship.

Editorial Review:

Girls today are in crisis--and this book shows why. Drawing on a vast array of lively historical sources, unpublished diaries by adolescent girls, and photographs that conjure up memories of the past, The Body Project chronicles how growing up in a female body has changed over the past century and why that experience is more difficult today than ever before.

Girls' bodies have certainly changed--they mature much earlier--but at the same time traditional social supports for girls' growth and development have collapsed. The media and popular culture exploit girls' normal sensitivity to their changing bodies, and many girls grow up believing that "good looks" --rather than "good works"--represent the highest form of female perfection. With an eye for the humor in as well as the pain of female adolescence, Joan Jacobs Brumberg shows how American girls came to define themselves increasingly through their appearance, so that today the body has become their primary project.

With remarkable insight, Brumberg provides an account of what adolescent girls gained and lost as American women shed the corset and the ideal of virginity for a new world of dieting, sexual freedom, and consumerism. She explains how doctors and parents helped to promote an ideal of physical perfection that underlies the current preoccupation with the body and contributes to many of the social and emotional problems identified by Mary Pipher in Reviving Ophelia and by Carol Gilligan in In a Different Voice.

The Body Project describes the historical roots of the acute societal and psychological pressures that girls feel today, evoking important memories of girl culture as well as milestones of physical and emotional development, such as first periods, pimples, training bras, first dates, and sexual awakening. A vivid photo essay and excerpts from intimate diaries underscore how girls' attitudes toward their bodies and sexuality have changed in the last century. The Body Project is a superb book, gracefully written, filled with understanding, and very relevant to the lives of girls and women today.
