Not Impressed 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I read this book in college for a children's lit class. I was not impressed. It is a melodramatic look at the evils of drugs. It reads like a bad after school special, created to frighten teenagers and warn them never to experiment with drugs of any kind. Also, despite the lore following this novel, it was not written by a teenager. Read the novel if must, but there are definitely better books out there about drug usage.

Semi Compelling... 2 out of 5 stars.

This book was kind of interesting. It is NOT written by a teenager. The story is about a girls struggle with drug addiction and personal identity. The things that give away this not so anonymous book is the content. There are several "big" words that are used by te author to suggest that this isnt written by a 14 year old addict. Throughout the story, the narrator spends her time raving about the drugs she uses but spends a little amount of time talking about boys and other "normal" teenage expierecnes. Before the story even starts, there is a note that says this book is fictional and all characters are made up. And the characters name isnt even Alice, Alice is simply a girl who is mentioned once in the book. "Go Ask Alice" is the title of a song sung by Jefferson Airplane. This book was also written during the during the 70s drug hype. This story can be a propaganda book to simply keep teenagers away from drugs. And if all this was real, the people the events and such, why hasnt anyone come through and said anything about this girl or anyone else in the story? Just makes you wonder...
So I recommed that you get this book from a library or a friend because it isnt really worth purchasing.

Much needed update 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Anyone that has bought a previous edition, will want to update as this edition has many newer drugs that were not previously available. Only complaint is that it would be good to have pictures of the generics as so many people can no longer afford the brand name, and the generic pill can look very different.

the pill book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Pill Book was very useful for my drug listing I had to do for school.
It provided me with concise, useful information on the drugs that I was researching.
I recommend other people to use the Pill Book.

Perscription Bible 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the third or fouth addition I have gotten of this book. I call it my Perscription Bible and have a copy at work and at home. I never take a medication without looking it up to see what, when, where and how it works. I use it as a referernce for others as well. I have been given other books but none are as easy to use or as informative as this one.

Editorial Review:

A guide to the most commonly prescribed drugs includes information on the dosages, side effects, and other possible adverse effects of dozens of new brand names, thirty recently approved generic drugs, and others.

They will make you get this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I want to thank everyone in the fellowship for showing me how to stay clean for more than 14 years to this date of my review. I rarely go to meetings today due a new direction in spirituality, however, the foundation of this program has been grounded in my life to have kept me clean for this long. If you are new to recovery, do what I did. Go to the meetings for the coffee. I say this cause it really doesn't matter why you go to meetings in the beginning as long as you suit up and show up. You will go for the right reasons eventually and they will make you get this book. It worked for me thus far and I hope you find recovery as I did utilizing this book and my sponsor for the answers to stay clean ONE DAY AT A TIME. God Bless!

Editorial Review:

Narcotics Anonymous: White Booklet

One of NA's earliest publications became the heart of N.A. meetings and the basis for all subsequent N.A. literature.

This booklet contains the twelve steps or principles to recovery, the twelve traditions of NA, and an inspiring selection of personal stories written by men and women who are recovering from an addiction to drugs. Recommended for anyone embarking on the road to recovery, and for all who want to help themselves or someone else stay clean.

Editorial Review:

I felt the prick of the needle, but only for a second, because this great rush of warmth quickly followed, encompassing my whole body from my toes right up to the top hair on my head. I couldn't move for a minute as she guided the needle in and out of my vein. When she was done, I felt like I had entered heaven. I looked in the mirror and felt beautiful and confident. I felt this great peace, at last, a warmth, and I knew that everything was going to be okay--and really always had been. Like time had stopped and I was floating on a cloud.

"Writing the book, I saw my old dope dealer and bought $1,500 worth of pure heroin--Brown Gold--and started shooting up ten times a day to get the feel of the book. Well, I did, all right. I ended up in Glen Cove General, almost dead. In truth, you make a deal with the Devil. He takes away your pain, but he owns you. You live for the next fix. After a while, it's totally physical; your body has to have it. But I'm off it for good."

Badly written, cliched and dull 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I find it interesting that the writer has gotten away with such terrible writing and such a lack of understanding of heroin addiction simply by aiming this poor attempt at a novel at "young adults". Is it because he could not get published if he tried to write for grown ups?
I picked up this book in an airport about to leave Los Angeles for London, 9 days after detoxing cold turkey from heroin and the Burroughs aping title and cover imagery made me think it would be an interesting read. I was wrong.
Written by a man who obviously has never experienced heroin use or addiction first (or Im guessing even second) hand, this woeful book patronises it's "teen" readers with old-guy-trying-to-be-hip teen speak (newsflash Burgess, no-one.... NO-ONE calls heroin "junk" anymore) and it's linear plotting.

Honestly, I was amazed that this book got published and then relentelessly promoted by a bunch of wannabe "hip" english teachers and social workers who again had no clue as to what the heroin scene was all about, as a book that could tell the kids "Drugs are, you know, bad and stuff."

Steer your teens to Trainspotting or even Junky if you want them to know what heroin is all about. Or, if you want them to think you are an out of touch old fool, give the a copy of this book.

Editorial Review:

This is an uncompromising, compelling and true-to-life story of two teenagers drawn into the dangerous and destructive world of heroin addiction. This tour de force by an acclaimed and provocative writer should become a definitive teenage novel on this subject.

Editorial Review:

Kyle Keegan was like many teenagers: eager to fit in at school, he experimented with alcohol and drugs. Soon, his abuse of these substances surpassed experimentation and became a ruthless addiction to heroin that nearly destroyed his life.
Now in recovery, Keegan tells his remarkable story in Chasing the High. Starting with the early days of alcohol and drug use, Keegan charts his decline into crime and homelessness as his need for heroin surpassed all thoughts of family and friends, of right and wrong. He then goes on to use these experiences to offer guidance and practical advice to other young people who may be struggling with substance abuse. In straightforward, easy-to-understand language and along with the psychiatric expertise of Howard Moss, MD, Keegan discusses what is known about the neurobiology of addiction in young people, how to seek treatment, and how to get the most out of professional help. He also covers such topics as therapies which are used to combat addiction, how to talk to families and friends about substance abuse, and how to navigate risky situations. Both an absorbing memoir and a useful resource for young people.
Part of the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series of books written specifically for teens and young adults, Chasing the High offers hope to young people who are struggling with substance abuse, helping them to overcome its challenges and to go on to lead healthy, productive lives.
