If I Was Your Girl by Ni-Ni Simone tells the story of a teenage mother and her struggles to be the best mother that she can be and pave the way for a brighter future for her and her child. I believe that all ages can benefit from reading this book. Especially if you were a teen mother at one time or have a child that is a teen mother. It shows the strength of a mother determined to see her daughter succeed to be the best she can be and helps her to realize that just because you have a child your dreams do not have to die. It shows a young girl grow into a responsible woman.

IF I WAS YOUR GIRL was an excellent read that definitely deserves five stars! It was a fast-paced read, I literally could not put this book down. It had me laughing out loud with the crazy antics of some of the characters, such as: Cousin Shake, Ms. Minnie and her son Lil' Bootsy. I encourage everyone, young and old to pick this book up, because it is just that good. I am not gonna lie, I was a little hesitant to read this because it was a young adult novel, but I am so glad that I gave it a chance. I throughly enjoyed it.

Nick plans on having a long, carefree summer with no distractions and no problems. What with his parents' divorce and his father's new girlfriend, Nick needs all the downtime he can get. Even the girl he's seeing (Dani) is starting to get to him. The girl is up for anything, but for some reason Nick just doesn't seem that in to it anymore.

But Nick's summer plans of carefree go out the window when Sasha shows up. She's been going to school with him for as long as he can remember. They've just never really talked to each other. One day they do, and suddenly something starts. Sasha is totally different than Dani and isn't about to do anything sexual quite so fast. But Nick and Sasha start getting hot and heavy by the time fall rolls around. And then Sasha breaks it off, saying that she wants to be able to concentrate on school and getting into the best college. Nick is crushed, but there's not much he can do.

Then, on Christmas Eve, Sasha shows up out of nowhere and tells Nick that she's pregnant. Sure, they were always careful and used protection, but one time something happened. Neither one of them thought much about it at the time, but now they're over-analyzing the night. Sasha is hesitant about her decision regarding the baby. After she tells her parents, she decides on an abortion, and doesn't really let Nick have much say. Nick, being so mixed up about the whole situation, really wishes Sasha would talk to him more and let him be involved. But the truth is that they could never really have a relationship again, even with the baby.

With the help of his gay best friend (Nathan) and his other best friend (Keelor), Nick manages to make it through this whole fiasco. But will he ever have another chance with Sasha? And what will Sasha's final choice about the baby be?

First off, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone under the age of seventeen due to the sexual scenes and the topic of pregnancy and all. That said, though, this was such a great read. I loved how it was told from the guy's point of view, which we hardly ever get to see. I felt so bad for Nick from the very beginning. Of course, my heart went out to Sasha, as well.

C.K. Kelly Martin is such a strong writer and this was an amazing book. Her words just jumped off the page to me. I loved Nick's attitude and actions, along with Sasha's. And Nick's younger 14-going-on-30 sister was great. Basically, I loved everything about this book except for the ending. It was okay; I just kind of wanted it to end differently!

But anyway, definitely pick up a copy of this book when it's released. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. And I really hope the author writes another book soon!

Thirteen-year-old Susanna (Sissy to her family) hasn't had much luck with the month of December. When she was six, her dad died in a horrible accident at work. At eight, her mother was diagnosed with a debilitating arthritis. And most recently, her spirited older sister, Briana, decides to run off to Los Angeles with her boyfriend. So this year's December is a depressing one as well. Briana sends postcards at first, but all too soon, there's no word at all. Sissy depends on her best friends, Melody and Stu, to help her through the lonely days of missing her sister, and practicing her flute helps pass the time as well. Somehow, life goes on.

Then, just before school starts the following year, Briana shows up at the front door asking to come home. But she's not alone --- she's pregnant. Briana's boyfriend is long gone, and she's better off without him; she absolutely refuses to find him for child support. Briana is determined to make a good life for her baby, and soon gets a cashier job at Wal-mart, saving up for everything her baby will need.

Sissy's so ecstatic with her sister home, and she's really looking forward to becoming an aunt. Her relationship with Briana has grown some as well. Instead of tagging around after Briana, admiring her from her little sister status, they are more like friends, pouring over baby books and following the baby's progress together. Sissy even volunteers to redecorate the new nursery, painting the walls lilac with green trim, and she loves to play her flute for the unborn baby.

But without warning, Briana falls deathly ill, and Sissy and her mom are faced with some impossible decisions. To make life more complicated and confusing, Sissy's friendships with Melody and Stu are changing; Melody seems distant, and Sissy finds she's seeing Stu in a different way, in a "guy-type" way. She wishes their friendship could return to normal, but deep down, she knows it will never be the same. This year's December approaches with even more sadness and despair than ever...and with one of the greatest gifts ever offered.

Author Ms. Lurlene McDaniel has written quite a few novels for young people including THE ANGELS IN PINK trilogy and LETTING GO OF LISA. As with her other stories, BRIANA'S GIFT centers around serious life changing events that really hit the heart hard. Ms. McDaniel's characters are as life-like as her plots, and her storylines keep the pages turning. Another winner from this talented author!

Two Great Novels in One 5 out of 5 stars.

For those of you looking for a great read, How To Deal is the perfect book. You will be getting two of Sarah Dessen's novels in one: Someone Like You and That Summer. The Movie How To Deal was made based on these two books. Both are wonderful reads for adolescent girls going through the pains and joys of growing up. In Someone Like You, best friends Halley and Scarlette struggle through Scarlette's pregnancy and together strive through the loss of a close friend. This book shows the blessings of a best friend, and how important it is to have someone to care about. In That Summer, Haven struggles through the pains of family life and first loves. It teaches the importance of family sticking together, and how wonderful and painful first loves can be. Both books are excellent novels and guides that every teenage girl will be able to relate to.

Gabe is a brash teenage guy who steadfastly ignores the pain of his past and seemingly lives only to toy with girls at parties. Helen is a serious, smart girl who wants to be a plastic surgeon and is uncomfortably aware of her previously deformed face. By chance, the two meet at a party that Helen reluctantly went to with a friend. Somehow, Helen and Gabe connect emotionally in an almost magical way and she is pregnant before the night is over. Helen is forced to deal with a life that changes each day in frightening and awe-inspiring ways.

Yes, this book is written in free verse. But as someone who usually shuns poetry, I can say that this style resulted in some of the most mind-blowingly moving images I have ever encountered in a novel. "One Night" is a quick read, composed of many one-or two paged poems that are each meant to chronicle a particular event or feeling in the lives of Helen, Gabe, and those connected to the two main characters. The poems vary in length, yet Wild writes them in such a way as to make every single word count. With surprisingly few words, she captures Gabe's desolation, Helen's powerful spirit, the upheaval the pregnancy causes, and the pain of labor. Wild is able to write in a way that will keep teens reading, but also to express controversial issues and wrenching emotions in ways that would make great authors proud. This is one of those books that you "travel" through with a racing heart, wanting to absorb every word of each poem, yet rushing ahead to find the next stunning line from this author's pen. With its simplicity yet depth and its hopeful ending, "One Night" is a book that will leave an impression.

The Breakable Vow, Kathryn Ann Clarke 0-06-051821-9

In 2001 there was reported 691,710 cases of non-fatal violence from spouses, ex-spouses, and boyfriends or girlfriends. There should not be violence in relationships between people. In The Breakable Vow Annie and her boyfriend, Kevin, had been going out for a while and Annie went on a camping trip with her friend, Rene. Kevin is a pretty jealous guy, so he showed up to surprise her, but was really making sure she wasn't cheating on him. While they were there Rene went off to hang out with some other camp people, and Kevin pressured Annie into having sex with him. When Annie got back from the camping trip she felt very sick, and found out that she was pregnant. When she told Kevin he told her that his mom could pay for an abortion, but Annie didn't want to get rid of her kid.
This story is realistic fiction. One day after one of Annie's doctor appointments Kevin was getting ready to drive her home, but stopped. He said, "Who's Herold." Herold was a guy that Annie met while camping. Then, when she said that he was just a guy she met while camping and didn't do anything with him, Kevin reached over and started to strangle her. She tried to get out, but couldn't. He told her he had no choice, but to strangle her, and that she was a slut. She finally got out of the car and ran home. She wasn't talking to him, but a couple of days later he came to her house and apologized. He said he would never touch her again. So, a couple months later she had her baby, and they got married. They moved to Texas for Kevin, because he had a football scholarship there. They continued to get into fights, and some were violent, but not extremely violent. Annie started going to a counselor. She told her that Kevin hurts her, then acts all nice to get her back, and that she's in big danger. Well, one night when Kevin found out that some boy at Annie's work liked her he came running into the house extremely drunk and it went too far.
This was one of the best books I've read in months! It had an interesting topic to start out, and it was very suspensful. For example, when Kevin found out that some guy at Annie's worked liked her it ended the chapter with this, "She was two steps from the front door when she saw the knob turning." I could not put the book down, because I wanted to know what happened next, and if Annie would get out alright. I 100% recommend this book, because it kept me reading for hours, and the story line never got boring. Also, some books have really stupid endings, but the ending to this book made me feel like I knew what happened, even though it pretty much left you at a cliff hanger. I felt very satisfied after the book ended. I hope that you read this book, and learn some facts on abusers too.

Kat(ima) is invisible at Tabor High. Or if not exactly invisible, then freaky Yoga Girl. And her best friend is the girl that wears the crazy hats. And to make matters worse, her mom owns Midwifery. It's a New-Age type midwife service that allows pregnant women to birth at home naturally. Her mom simply goes by Abra. No last name, just Abra. Kat helps out there twice a week doing various office duties.

The story starts off with Abra calling Kat up and begging her to assist with a birth. Kat has never done that before, and the couple having the baby is pleased to have Kat there. However, Kat fumbles through everything and makes a mess of it all. Her mom doesn't want her along any more, and in a fit of rebellion, Kat quits, agreeing to stay on until her mom is able to find a replacement. So junior year for Kat isn't off to a great start.

Things may be looking up though when her crush of the last few years, Manny Cruz, asks her a question in Spanish class. Kat can count on her hand the number of interactions she's had with him previously. What started out as one innocent question soon turns into random meetings around town, and then soon the two are secretly dating. But at school, neither acknowledges the other.

Enter Libby Giles, the beautiful "it" girl of the senior class. Libby has just broken it off with her boyfriend, Mitch. No one knows the full story, but it's obvious to all that Mitch was not the dumper, but the dumpee. In what turns into frequent chance encounters, Mitch and Kat keep running into each other. They soon form a hesitant friendship, and Mitch turns to Kat for advice in getting Libby back. An added plus to the friendship is that Manny and Mitch are friends, and Mitch actually approves of the secret friendship Manny and Kat have.

During the course of the school year, there are ups and downs for Kat at school, with Manny, at home and with her best friend, Christy. The day Libby enters the Midwifery, everything Kat has assumed about others is thrown out the window. She must re-evaluate everything she has known and understood.

Kat is a wonderful character that the reader immediately comes to love. Through her highs and lows, the reader is constantly rooting for her. All along the reader knows that Kat is stronger than she realizes, and the self-acceptance she gets in the end makes you want to stand up and applaud for her. Read FACT OF LIFE #31 and you too will come to learn that maybe there really aren't any true facts of life. Or are there?

Hilarious and true and inspirational, Hello, My Name is Mommy is for every pregnant woman and new mother who ever felt helpless and out of control instead of confident and aglow.

Sure, women know pregnancy is no bed of roses, but Lynch taps into her own dysfunctional childhood and fears about becoming a mom to label a much profounder worry many moms-to-be have: that their own pasts were so screwed up that they're doomed to repeat the cycle. Dr. Spock may tell moms to trust their instincts, but Lynch's Misfit Mommies want to do every last thing but that. They feel like frauds and imposters, and Lynch's real-girl's voice will be instantly recognizable to them. Lynch will walk and talk new moms through it all: from lamenting the hot dogs and second-hand smoke they were raised on (and, of course, "you turned out just fine") to the realization that kids are kind of germy and gross (but feeling that way doesn't make one a bad mother) to keeping it together at work with Cheerios in the old nursing bra.
