Editorial Review:

If you can browse through the pictures of the white-faced capuchin monkeys in Manuel Antonio National Park, the iridescent green quetzal in Monteverde Cloud Forest, and the scarlet macaw in Carara Biological Reserve without booking your tickets to Costa Rica in a hot second, you have saintly restraint. But even that sort of discipline can't withstand images of the newly hatched green turtle in Tortuguero National Park and the exhausted leatherback turtle who's just laid eggs on Playa Grande. Other pictures contained in Frommer's 2000 Costa Rica depict brilliantly hued poison frogs and verdant rain forests, pristine beaches and remote hot springs, waterfalls and volcano geysers. It's a Catch-22 of the best sort: if you thumb through Eliot Greenspan's book, you'll need to go, and if you're already headed to Costa Rica, you'll want this book.

Greenspan, a poet, journalist, and travel writer who's lived in Costa Rica since 1992, knows his adopted country well; he also knows the tastes and needs of his travel audience. In his "Best of Costa Rica" section, he provides the lowdown on beaches, nature hikes, scenic villages, nightlife, and ecolodges. His legwork helps considerably in choosing an itinerary that fits your budget and time constraints. Along with in-depth chapters on Costa Rica's cities and regions and a large fold-out map, there are appendices on Costa Rica's history, economy, food, and natural environment, as well as information about organized adventure trips, national parks and bioreserves, and scads of activities from biking and bungee jumping to horseback riding. Greenspan's guide is a great incentive and an equally fine travel aid. --Stephanie Gold

If you don't buy any other book, get this one. It has it all.

Studied it at length before booking and then we took it along and were glad we did both. You will be too.

Editorial Review:

This guide to travel in Costa Rica, Belize and Guatemala provides the traveller with information on the needs before leaving home, how to get there and how to get around and what to see and do. Accommodation, food and activities for all budgets are covered as are special attractions of the region - the Costa Rican rain forest, the historic ruins of Guatemala and diving in the cays of Belize.

Pura vida is a misleading, inaccurate and incomplete 'guide' 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I have traveled several times to Costa Rica and have many acquaintances among native Costa Ricans. Mr. Itiel's book gives an inaccurate picture of life in Costa Rica, and should some unwary reader attempt to follow Mr Itiel's footsteps (in regards to 'hiring' so-called guides) an uncomfortable and potential dangerous outcome may ensue. The maps, Spanish phrases, in the book are incorrect- and evidence either poor knowledge on Mr. Itiel's part or poor effort in proof-reading. The book is extremely short and superficial and ignores many aspects of which Costa Rica is famous throughout the world. The black and white photos are not very descriptive and do not do justice to the beauty and color in Costa Rica. N. Del Pizzo's chapter was just as superficial as Mr. Itiel's work- it is regretable that she did not evidence/experience much of the 'ambience' of CR- that being the case, somebody who HAD seen the 'woman's side of Costa Rica" should have written that chapter. It would have been more informative. I am very sorry that I WASTED $20 on this book and I strongly urge potential readers NOT to consider it. Thank you, J. A Thomas Test
