Barrett takes a trip to DisneyWorld to a new level. Most people walk through the parks oblivious to the little details that the Imagineers have included in each park and resort. This slim book, 220 pages and 8.9" x 4", fits easily in your backpack to provide you with scavenger hunts for all of the known Hidden Mickeys at the DisneyWorld parks and resorts. Each chapter begins with clues to the locations of the Hidden Mickeys at each location. If you follow the clues, you will have a quick tour though each park/resort. If you just want the answers, Barrett provides the answers at the end of each chapter. Either way, you will learn more about the parks and resorts and also find these little treasures.

Using this book, it was easy to engage everyone in the family in the search. The kids will enjoy discovering these Mickeys and will also make you look at your surroundings. While searching, I was surprised at the number of people that took interest in our hunts. They never thought to look closely at their environment. In the Magic Kingdom, I told a few people that there windows, above Main Street, that actually meant something. They never thought to look above eye level. Since we visited the parks more than once during our stay, this book made the additional forays into the parks more interesting and fun. If you feel as though you have seen and done everything in a particular park or resort, this book will make your next visit more engaging. Two of my favorite Hidden Mickeys were found at Coronado Springs. The third was in the concrete at Hollywood Studios.

Barret explains why some of these are significant, which will add a little Disney history to your visit, too.

This is a great book for anyone that is planning a visit to DisneyWorld and want to experience something a little different. And it will probably entertain your kids, too, no matter how old they are.

Editorial Review:

Described as a must have and definitely something that you'll want to bring along the next time you head down to WDW by Disney guru Jim Hill of jimhillmedia.com, Steve Barrett's Hidden Mickeys is a necessity for Walt Disney World buffs. This updated third edition adds scores of new hidden Mickeys and eliminates those erased by time.

Editorial Review:

Your initial reaction to Bill Bryson's reading of A Walk in the Woods may well be "Egads! What a bore!" But by sentence three or four, his clearly articulated, slightly adenoidal, British/American-accented speech pattern begins to grow on you and becomes quite engaging. You immediately get a hint of the humor that lies ahead, such as one of the innumerable reasons he longed to walk as many of the 2,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail as he could. "It would get me fit after years of waddlesome sloth" is delivered with glorious deadpan flair. By the time our storyteller recounts his trip to the Dartmouth Co-op, suffering serious sticker shock over equipment prices, you'll be hooked.

When Bryson speaks for the many Americans he encounters along the way--in various shops, restaurants, airports, and along the trail--he launches into his American accent, which is whiny and full of hard r's. And his southern intonations are a hoot. He's even got a special voice used exclusively when speaking for his somewhat surprising trail partner, Katz. In the 25 years since their school days together, Katz has put on quite a bit of weight. In fact, "he brought to mind Orson Welles after a very bad night. He was limping a little and breathing harder than one ought to after a walk of 20 yards." Katz often speaks in monosyllables, and Bryson brings his limited vocabulary humorously to life. One of Katz's more memorable utterings is "flung," as in flung most of his provisions over the cliff because they were too heavy to carry any farther.

The author has thoroughly researched the history and the making of the Appalachian Trail. Bryson describes the destruction of many parts of the forest and warns of the continuing perils (both natural and man-made) the Trail faces. He speaks of the natural beauty and splendor as he and Katz pass through, and he recalls clearly the serious dangers the two face during their time together on the trail. So, A Walk in the Woods is not simply an out-of-shape, middle-aged man's desire to prove that he can still accomplish a major physical task; it's also a plea for the conservation of America's last wilderness. Bryson's telling is a knee-slapping, laugh-out-loud funny trek through the woods, with a touch of science and history thrown in for good measure. Editorial Review:

First published in 1982, William Least Heat-Moon's account of his journey along the back roads of the United States (marked with the color blue on old highway maps) has become something of a classic. When he loses his job and his wife on the same cold February day, he is struck by inspiration: "A man who couldn't make things go right could at least go. He could quit trying to get out of the way of life. Chuck routine. Live the real jeopardy of circumstance. It was a question of dignity."

Driving cross-country in a van named Ghost Dancing, Heat-Moon (the name the Sioux give to the moon of midsummer nights) meets up with all manner of folk, from a man in Grayville, Illinois, "whose cap told me what fertilizer he used" to Scott Chisholm, "a Canadian citizen ... [who] had lived in this country longer than in Canada and liked the United States but wouldn't admit it for fear of having to pay off bets he made years earlier when he first 'came over' that the U.S. is a place no Canadian could ever love." Accompanied by his photographs, Heat-Moon's literary portraits of ordinary Americans should not be merely read, but savored.

Featuring 80 all new maps and more than 350 photos, this guide is the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book of its kind on the market today. A perennial favorite with almost a million copies sold in previous editions, it reflects National Geographic's century-long association with America's national parks system and its peerless reputation for travel expertise and cartographic excellence.

The book opens with an essay by Yellowstone authority Paul Schullery, and an introduction to the guide with a locator map showing all 58 of these American treasures (including the newest, South Carolina's Congree National Park). Next, the parks are presented alphabetically region-by-region, with individual maps and geographical profiles of each. These colorfully illustrated descriptions offer tours tailored to the time available, whether it's an hour or a week, and tell visitors the best spots to enjoy hikes, spectacular vistas, wildlife and more. Itineraries and directions, special activities and advisories, and suggestions of hotels and campgrounds are provided, along with scores of ideas for excursions to nearby wildlife refuges, monuments, and other nature areas of exceptional interest—140 in all.

From planning a trip to making the most of every minute, here's all the information anyone could want on the scenic national parks plus invaluable recommendations and advice from the National Geographic writers who know them well.

A nice map of NYC 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this map to use on a short trip to NYC. Although it is laminated and folds up to pocket size, there were better maps in the guide books I purchased. On the trip, I didn't use it very much.

Great Map! 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great map of the city, easy to carry around. It's plastic, a big plus when it starts raining or if you spill anything on it. My only complain is that it does not include a Subway Map. It has Subway Routes in the map but with all the streets, etc it get a little difficult to make out.
Overall, great map. A must have for tourist or anyone new to the city.

Great map - very helpful! 5 out of 5 stars.

Never having been to New York, this map was a really big help in navigating the City. It even helped before I left home by letting me see where my hotel was in relation to the places I wanted to see and how I would travel to see them.

Editorial Review:

A travelogue by Bill Bryson is as close to a sure thing as funny books get. The Lost Continent is no exception. Following an urge to rediscover his youth (he should know better), the author leaves his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that takes him across 38 states. Lucky for us, he brought a notebook.

With a razor wit and a kind heart, Bryson serves up a colorful tale of boredom, kitsch, and beauty when you least expect it. Gentler elements aside, The Lost Continent is an amusing book. Here's Bryson on the women of his native state: "I will say this, however--and it's a strange, strange thing--the teenaged daughters of these fat women are always utterly delectable ... I don't know what it is that happens to them, but it must be awful to marry one of those nubile cuties knowing that there is a time bomb ticking away in her that will at some unknown date make her bloat out into something huge and grotesque, presumably all of a sudden and without much notice, like a self-inflating raft from which the pin has been yanked."

Yes, Bill, but be honest: what do you really think?

Nothing but Ads! 1 out of 5 stars.

I bought this becuase of the reviews. Big Mistake.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE I BOUGHT THIS JUNK GUIDE! Nothing but RV ads! I paid for RV ads! You can do WAY BETTER getting a AAA guide book and maps.

I wanted GOOD maps of Alaska and Canada. There is nothing in this guide but mile marker and road turnout descriptions. I WANT MAPS!

There are few maps in this guide. The few in it are worse than the phone book maps!

Do not waste your money on this book. You would be better served emailing or writing the tourist board of Canada by region or the Alaska Tourist Board.

This book is a phone book of Ads that you are paying for! Total RIP OFF!

George Motz is an American Hero! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! I've been obsessed with Hamburger America since I saw the documentary on the Sundance Channel. The documentary makes most of the content tackling similar subjects on the Travel Channel, Food Network, History Channel, etc., seem like insipid, dumbed-down crap. It is beautiful to watch the small-time, low-key purveyors of American tradition talk about the simplicity of what they do. The book is a great read, with beautiful photographs and loving tributes to a vanishing America that's rapidly becoming standardized, corporate-ized,bland-ized, Wal-Martized, Starbucksized, Bush-ized, and stupid-ized. I keep it on my bedside.

I am tempted to take off a star because this sampling of American tradition was actually printed IN CHINA! Nothing against the Chinese, but this seems sad, in a way.

Reading the book and watching the video makes me hungry, but if you eat enough of this stuff, it will probably kill you.

Editorial Review:

Whether you're an armchair traveler, a serious hamburger connoisseur, or a curious adventurer up for a road trip, Hamburger America will be your guide to reclaiming this precious slice of Americana.

No other food says "America" like the hamburger, and documentary filmmaker George Motz has made it his personal mission to save our nation's unique burger identity. He has traveled across the country in search of the best burger joints - those that have survived outside the fast-food mainstream - and has documented their rich histories and one-of-a-kind taste experiences.

This edition of the book includes George Motz's 1 hour documentary "Hamburger America" that profiles 8 burger joints across the USA.
