Dreamweaver 3 out of 5 stars.

The book material itself is fantastic and unbelievably easy to follow and understand. The craftmanship, if you will, of the book sucks. It literally started falling apart at the binding within 2 days of receiving it. I am not rough on the book by any means and do not transport it. It stays on my desk and I use it during my lunch hour. It has fallen apart and I have to keep a huge binder clip on it to keep all the pages intact.

A rush job 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 27 people found this review helpful.

The first 75% of the book deals with plain HTML, forms and other buttons and takes one from 0 to 5 on a scale to 1000. A lot of space wasted on mechanical clicking around the interface. Explain the menus and options and how to use them and don't need to walk through each one as if I've never seen a mouse. Now, if all you want in a web site is a bunch of words, links and pictures, all you need is MS Word and then Save as HTML. So, I imagine the fun part is when you have a database, to make the site smart... The database examples have missing steps and built in assumptions, no clue as to what could go wrong, etc. Needless to say, I spent many hours searching the net to fill the missing spaces left by this book. To my surprise, I found Macromedia's ONLINE UltraDev help a much better resource, with better explanations and a lot more graphics. Thanks Jannine, but no thanks!

Editorial Review:

In this book we look specifically at using Dreamweaver’s built-in server behaviors to build dynamic web sites using PHP and MySQL, the world’s most popular open source server-side language and database server combination, which are both reliable, powerful, and open source (and therefore free to use!) This latest version of Dreamweaver includes even more powerful support for PHP and MySQL.

David Powers first takes you through the latest version of Dreamweaver, and how PHP and MySQL fit into it, then looks in-depth at setting up your work environment – installing PHP, MySQL, and the Apache web server, making sure they are all working together, and setting up a new web site via Dreamweaver. He then goes to work, using several tutorials and real world examples including topics such as PHP essentials (knowing what PHP code looks like,) working with forms, designing and implementing effective MySQL databases, debugging and troubleshooting, creating dynamic navigation, login, and search functionality

Examples built throughout the book include a content management system, and an online image gallery. All examples are designed to meet modern usability requirements and be web standards compliant. No previous experience of PHP or MySQL is necessary to use this book.

Web Collection Revealed - Premium Edition 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book primarily for information on Flash CS3 and Photoshop CS3. I don't have anything to compare it to in regard to these two features, but it is clear to me that the section on Dreamweaver CS3 is not nearly as thorough as the book "Dreamweaver MX 2004" which I purchased several years ago.

I just tried to read up on a couple of Dreamweaver topics in "The Web Collection Revealed" but couldn't find them mentioned. I didn't have any trouble finding the topics covered in my "DREAMWEAVER MX 2004" and the instruction from MX 2004 still worked in the CS3 version of Dreamweaver.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive introductory book provides step-by-step instruction and in-depth explanation on three of today's most widely used Web design and development programs: Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, Adobe Flash CS3, and Adobe Fireworks CS3. Readers gain practical experience with the software as they work through end-of-chapter learning projects and step-by-step tutorials. An integration chapter demonstrates how to move from one application to the other while creating a Dreamweaver Web site that incorporates both Flash and Fireworks files. Full-color illustrations and a user-friendly design combine to create a solid learning experience that reveals how to master the latest features of these popular applications.

There's A Better Way 1 out of 5 stars.
18 of 23 people found this review helpful.

If you buy this book and have no previous knowledge of Dreamweaver MX, you are a dummy. The authors may be nice persons, but they are not teachers. You'd be better served using the small manual that comes with Dreamweaver than this book, which is so disorganized it should come with a machete.
Everyone knows the best way to learn is "by doing." Early on in Dreamweaver MX for Dummies, you will make a blank web page, put a title on it - and never see that page again. Conversely, the DW MX manual starts off with you building a static three page web page. Do it a couple of times, and you are on your way.
I suggest that if you need a reference book (which you do) spend your money on Dreamweaver MX Unleashed by Pizzi and Ruvalcaba - much better organized with everything you ever wanted to know about Dreamweaver MX.

Editorial Review:

  • This easy-to-use reference guide, designed to make creating top notch Web sites more intuitive and efficient, covers the new features and updates included in the new version of Dreamweaver.
  • Filled with to the point tips and easy to follow instructions, this book will be the Web designer's secret weapon in the race to design high caliber and functional Web sites.
  • When it comes to the most advanced HTML features, such as Dynamic HTML and Cascading Style Sheets; this book really shines making it fun and easy to add animations, rollover effects, and multimedia to bring any site to life.
  • The book includes bonus Fireworks coverage, making it even more attractive to the target audience.
ABOUT THE CD-ROM
