Heavy duty -- in the best possible way! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book is heavy in more ways than one. For one thing, it's a big thick, glossy tome that weighs a lot. However, the good news is that it's worth its wait in gold! Never have a seen such an accessible, comprehensive aid for getting things done with Dreamweaver. It's task and tool based, with every step illustrated in color. Makes it incredibly easy to do use just about every aspect of the product. You just look up the task or tool and voilla! Fortunately, it's accessibility doesn't limit its utility, so this book is also for experienced DW users. I'm amazed at the sophistication of the techniques, even though they're presented in a way that make them head-smacking easy. This just could be the best overall book on Dreamweaver yet.

Editorial Review:

If you prefer to see what things look like and how to perform a task, instead of just being told, this is your ideal A to Z reference. Part I shows every Dreamweaver 8 tool and how to use it. Part II provides step-by-step instructions for more than 140 key tasks and techniques. Both are arranged alphabetically and illustrated in full color. It's the ultimate Visual resource--you'll see!

* Each tool and technique illustrated in full color
* Alphabetical listings for easy reference
* Step-by-step instructions for performing dozens of tasks
* A comprehensive guide for visual learners

A Visual guide to
* Understanding and using all the Dreamweaver tools

Excellent reference 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I run two websites and know Dreamweaver, but only enough to keep my sites running. I needed a reference for those occasions when I do something new, and this book filled the niche perfectly. The chatty, easy to follow descriptions of various functions in Dreamweaver make it easy for me to add functionality when I need them. Two thumbs up!

Excellent ALL-IN-ONE reference.... 5 out of 5 stars.

I work a lot with various businesses and part of my work includes web design. In the past, I was also a Director of Education for PeopleSoft and I have served in similar capacities for a variety of companies in Silicon Valley. As such, I am well-qualified to judge the merit of this materail and I must say it is a real bargain for the 800+ one stop shopping reference for DreamWeaver 8.

The book is well-organized and it could be used as either a text or an "as needed" reference manual. The descriptions are clear, to the point and easy to find. It also deals with topics such as inserting Flash video and has a lot of meaty content in addition to simple instructions.

This book is truly a "must have" reference for any web developer!

Excellent Guide for taking it to the next level 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I have quite a bit of experience building static sites and pages and realized the importance of expanding my understanding of building dynamic sites. I have a pretty good understanding of using Dreamweaver but am just getting started on using Dreamweaver CS3. I was hoping to get a better idea of how to use all of the new features in CS3 while also specifically learning php. I got more than I bargained for. Specifically, I was not aware of the differences between ASP, ColdFusion and PHP. Now, I have a much better feel of which one to use for different situations.

One of the things that struck me right away is that anyone, regardless of your current level of experience, that is interested in using Dreamweaver can start out with this book. For those of you who already have Dreamweaver experience, you can speed through a few of the first parts but it is always great to see how someone else approaches things.

The tutorials and sample files were great and very easy to use - very intuitive and the sequential steps made lots of sense. I am still in the process of implementing all of the things I am learning. As a result of using this book, I am now planning to revise an existing static site and launch a new dynamic site. I love the way the book is written - very practical. I almost feel like the authors are having a dialog with me all along the way.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn how to use Dreamweaver CS3 to build dynamic websites and applications.

Editorial Review:

Designed for intermediate Web designers and developers with no previous experience with programming or server-side technology.  Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, ColdFusion and PHP: Training from the Source has been fully-updated, not just for the latest version of Dreamweaver but for today's Web. It's now standards--compliant, with a site created using one of Dreamweaver's brand-new CSS templates, that includes Ajax elements in the dynamic site design. Users ready to take the next step and make their Web sites interactive will find the same easy-to-read, logical, well-constructed projects, but with a site based on the latest Web technology.

VERY GOOD starter resource 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I almost gave this 5 stars, but because it's just a small book that's intended as a a 'starter' then 5 seemed too much. Anyway, I think this book is very good at getting you up and around in Dreamweaver CS3. This book is a GREAT start for a beginner (experienced web programmers should skip it.) I'm no expert by any stretch, just an average user who needs to create a website for my small side business.

The book takes you through making a sample website, with easy examples of elements you might want to use in your own site. I think it does a great job of 'learning by doing' but doesn't take you too deep where you'll get lost. Once you go through this book, you'll be able to start work on your own site, doing your own thing - at that point you will probably want a more robust reference book for more advanced stuff.

I've not run across any 'errors', but there could be some, the book's not perfect. However the support site does have a page of corrections and updates, I didn't see any for this edition but there were a few corrections for prior editions.

Final thought- if you want some 'training wheels' to get started and practice building something, this a great choice, and a fair price for what it is.

Editorial Review:

Dreamweaver has been the tool of choice for professional Web site designers for years. And now that it is part of the Adobe Creative Suite, even more users, including beginning Web designers, will find it in their hands. This book is for them--all of the people who are itching to design their very first Web site but don't want to learn every last Dreamweaver feature to do so. This full-color volume guide offers them the quickest route to creating a well-designed, friendly Web site! Each short chapter uses big, bold screen shots and step-by-step instructions to illuminate one aspect of this process. By the end of the volume, users will create a simple Web site, fill it with text, graphics and tables, use style sheets, create image maps, add navigation and links, and test and publish the final product. Timely tips and occasional sidebars detailing good design practices round out the book.

Learn Dreamweaver quickly without the "fluff" 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 offers a little something for all skill levels. You will benefit greatly from the hands-on approach this book has to offer. Janine (the author) starts off by walking you through the basics of starting Dreamweaver and quickly moves right into how the interface is set up. After you get a primer on the interface she explains how the HTML is constructed which is split up across a few of the chapters. Each chapter focuses on a specific point, such as: Image, Links, Formatting, etc. The fact this book focuses on tables is odd for my development, but that doesn't mean it isn't valuable and it certainly is a good idea to understand the basic concepts of building a site.

The book ends off with 3 very important topics. Publishing, Maintaining and Database usage all of which will assist you in keeping your site up to date and your visitors coming back.

Overall I was very pleased with this books content and would recommend it to anyone looking to get started or for a refresher in all that Dreamweaver has to offer.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

You're a beginner who wants to design a state-of-the-art family web site. You've just started a new job, and you need to learn Dreamweaver fast. Or maybe you're a professional who's been using another program but is now switching to Macromedia's leading web design tool. Learning Dreamweaver 8 gets you up to speed, quickly and efficiently.

Straightforwardly practical, with speed as the by-word, this hands-on guide focuses on the best practices for constructing both interactive and static web sites. While explaining core concepts clearly and thoroughly, so that beginners have a solid conceptural and technical foundation, it cuts through the clutter that might slow down a beginner tackling a subject as vast as web design and a tool as robust as Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver 8 Design and Construction emphasizes learning by doing, with short, task-oriented chapters that demonstrate theory by presenting design solutions and explaining the principles that make them work. Plenty of screen shots, illustrations, and sample layouts accompany rapid prototyping techniques for site production.

Marc Campbell has been building web sites since 1997-for everything from comic book fan communities to state government portals and e-commerce applications. A Macromedia Certified Dreamweaver Developer and beta tester, he has taught web design to students at all levels and has written eight books on the subject.

Sidebars in Dreamweaver 8 Design and Construction allow readers to decide how deeply they want to delve into the subject. "Best Bets" offer bottom-line recommendations for those who want to skip the general discussion, while "Behind the Scenes" sidebars provide more in-depth looks at particular topics for those who want more detail. Absolute beginner or faux debutante, you'll learn proven procedures for quickly building Dreamweaver sites.

Obsolesence revisited 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Potential buyers be warned: Dreamweaver MX is obsolete, so the training copy included on the CD is just that--a trial/training copy. It cannot be purchased, nor registered, nor updated (on a Macintosh; the work-around does not affect a trial copy). So all the instruction is effective as a general introduction to Dreamweaver, but useless for the purpose of actually posting a website. If you have a paid copy of MX, well-enough. I find the book technically rather than creatively oriented, but then cold fusion seems to be the general mood, while H.O.T. strikes me as a cute advertising gimmick. Onward to Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Editorial Review:

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Hands-On Training is the latest, updated version of the highly acclaimed tutorial from leading Web-design trainers Garo Green and Abigail Rudner. Thousands of readers have learned how to use Dreamweaver by simply following the step-by-step exercises in this foolproof book. Advanced sections of the book show how to create interactive, moving elements in your Web site, and how to download and use the hundreds of free extensions available online to Macromedia Dreamweaver users. And throughout the book, readers learn useful bits of information about HTML, online type, Web color, and more, while Quicktime movie tutorials demonstrate complex techniques.
