Not nearly as good as A Walk Across America 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

In his book describing his walk across many eastern states Jenkins does an excellent job of describing the scenery and people he encounters. You really feel that he bonds with those he meets.

The boat trip described in this book seems much less interesting - mostly because it seems so forced. It seems that Jenkins looks back fondly on his long walk and wants nothing more than to recreate it - this time on a boat. The trouble is, an adventure like his walk is impossible to recreate.

A Walk Across America was written after the fact. His adventuresome spirit led him to many intriguing places and he only thought to write about it after it was over. In this book however, Jenkins seems to be on a hunt for interesting folks to include in a new book.

Sometimes he succeeds in finding interesting people (a Vietnam vet and his brother, a Texas sheriff) but more often than not the people he describes were a bit eccentric but really not worth writing about in a book.

Editorial Review:

The best-selling author and walker Peter Jenkins, landlubber par excellence, now takes to the waves and explores, as only he can, a part of America rich in history, mystery, and lore: from the Florida Keys to the Mexican border, by way of the Everglades, the treacherous "jungle woods," genteel southern homesteads, the Cajun marshlands, and Texas's coastal cattle country. It's a riveting encounter with hardy, resourceful, colorful - and occasionally dangerous - characters who have one thing in common: a fierce love for their world of wind and water and sun, a world that Jenkins brings uniquely to life.

Memories 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was born and reared in Miami, the fourth generation of my Pioneer South Florida family. I was delighted with this book, it brought back so many memories.

The old photographs are gems, and the descriptions well written and informative. I enjoyed the "then" pictures with the "now", in some instances they are almost unbelievable, the Coconut Grove Womens Club little Club House which I went to frequently is a good example, long may it survive!

Captiving Photo Book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you have lived in Miami or have an affinity toward Miami, this is a must-have book. Few people in Miami like Arva Moore Parks have taken the time to document the City's rich history as the fastest-growing metropolis in the United States over the last 100 years. The "then and now" photos offer splendid matches, with interesting and informative historical notes in the caption. Great coffee-table book too!

Editorial Review:

A look at the history of Miami, with stunning contemporary and historic photography and captions describing the development of this famous city. Part of the highly successful "Then and Now" series, this book looks at the changes in this exciting city.

A Great Book For Relocators That Even Non-Relocators Can Enjoy 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

THE NEWCOMER'S HANDBOOK FOR MOVING TO AND LIVING IN WASHINGTON DC is a great book for people relocating to the area, but even people who are not moving there can enjoy it. It talks about where the best neighborhoods and schools are in the District itself, as well as in Maryland and Virginia, mentions where the shopping malls and other stores are, and it even goes into detail about the town of Columbia, Maryland, which other books about the Baltimore-Washington DC area fail to do. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is proud to say "I'm an American."

Editorial Review:

The fourth edition of this #1 guide for relocating to Washington DC contains detailed information on neighborhoods, getting settled, helpful services, child care and education, cultural life, and much more. Written by Mike Livingston, its 432 pages provide useful information to help you decide where to move, to help you with your move, to help you settle into DC life, or just to give you the chance to get to know Washington DC better.

Disney Travel Journal 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

All catered toward a trip to Disney, with spots for what you did, what you ate, what characters you saw, etc. Expected it to be a little more colorful, though.

This Lives Up to the Magic!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Our family likes to keep journals whenever we go to Disney, but this is the first journal we've found that lives up to the magic. It's filled with all kinds of things to fill out, including where we went, what we saw, what we had to eat, etc. We really liked the sections that asked what our favorite moments of the day were, we found that when we looked back on the day to think of our favorite moments that we were able to relive the magic all over again! The fact that there is so much to fill out is great, that way you won't forget a thing. Highly recommended!!

Editorial Review:

A personalized keepsake of your Walt Disney World vacation. Includes sections for writing down all of the attractions you've visited, where you stayed, where you ate, what souvenirs you got, what the weather was like, and how you got around. There's even a section for recording all of your magical moments of the day so you'll remember them forever! If you're tired of journals that are simply collections of blank pages, then this beautifully illustrated book is for you! You'll find lots of places for you to fill in, check off and write in so you can preserve all of the memories from your magical vacation (up to 14 days!).

Exactly what you're looking for! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book has everything a child and/or adult needs to know about the snakes that can be found in any given area of the Southeast. Even down to the parish/county you may live in. It gives you hints that let you know which snake is which (enormously helpful for venomous ones). It also shows a way, with only 1 exception (the coral snake), to determine if a snake is venomous by looking at it's shed skin. Now how many times have you or your child come across a snake skin and wondered if it could have been a harmful snake? I bought this book for my 6 year old son who, like his mother, has an interest in snakes and curiosity. I recently noticed my hubby perusing through it & he despises them. Matter of fact, my neighbor has already borrowed it for identification. He then decided to read through it the rest of the way...it's just that insightful!

Editorial Review:

Fifty-two kinds of snakes can be found in the Southeast, almost half of all species native to North America. Filled with more than 300 color photographs and written by two of the region's most renowned herpetologists, this is the most comprehensive educational guide to the snakes of the Southeast. At the heart of the guide are its heavily illustrated, fact-filled descriptions of each species and its habitat. Also included is a wealth of general information about the importance of snake conservation and the biology, diversity, and life cycles of snakes. Useful information about the interactions of humans and snakes is also covered: species that are likely to be found near houses, snakes as pets, what to do in case of a snake bite, and more. Clearly written, cleanly designed, and fun to use, the guide will promote a better understanding of the habitat needs of, and environmental challenges to, this fascinating group of animals.

Less snobbery, more practical advice please 2 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I bought two books for my trip to southern Utah. I read this one first and found it lacking. The author spends too much time decrying what he calls "photocopying," which is shooting iconic scenes that have already been done to death. Now I agree in principle that one should find their own interpretation of a scene and not look for Muench's tripod holes. But in reality, most amateur photogs are looking for the "trophy shots" that are icons. I don't need a lecture, just tell me how to get there and what time of day the light is good. That's all I ask from this kind of book.

Editorial Review:

The Canyon Country of the Southwestern U.S. hosts some of the most unusual and beautiful landscapes and geography in the world. These awesome displays of the sculpture-making capabilities of nature are stunning in their shapes, varieties of color, and the ways in which they capture the sunlight.

Now, John Annerino, critically acclaimed photographer and author gives you the tools to find and shoot these locations. The parks that are covered around this famous Four Corners region of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah include: Mesa Verde, Glen Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Zion, Capitol Reef, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Annerino will guide you on how to find the precise locations to shoot those postcard-perfect shots and provides tips on timing, lighting, composition, and the story behind the scenery. No visitor to this area should be without it. Full-color throughout.

Best compact guide to the southern-most fun spot! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Whether you're taking a family vacation, reveling on a wild spring break, or immersing yourself in one of the alternative or eccentric lifestyles for which Key West is so famous, you can't miss if you have this well-researched and informative guide. I love the Itineraries section, with something for everyone. By the way, don't worry about the 'un-gentrified' neighborhood in which Blue Heaven restaurant is located - it's one of the best in South Florida. Just about everything you need to have a great time in a tropical paradise 150 miles south of Miami. Five stars.
