Took me to places I would never have found otherwise. 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This will lead you to interesting places that are mostly not well known. The views are stunning. A hiker on the Appalachian Trail said the view from Wayah Bald is the best on the trail. The only problem we had is that road numbers have been changed to names, but most of the numbers were still in fine print on the signs.

Wonderful... 5 out of 5 stars.

Since I recently moved to North Carolina, spending my free time towards the mountains became a must. Carolyn has saved me countless hours of researching where to go and what to do. I am glad to find such an informative book.

Entire series is Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

I was introduced to this book by a friend and ended up buying the whole series! If you want to know more about western NC and spend your days enjoying a well written dialog that accurately directs you to place the other guides don't even mention, Buy this book. If you want a restaurant guide look elsewhere. I can wholeheartedly recommend the entire series from this publisher. Similar to the "off the beaten path" series only better, written by life long residents that obviously love their home state!

More Austin than San Antonio 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Excellent book, very descriptive but there are more Austin trails than SA trails. Some of the trails in this book have become our faves and we would never have found them without the book.

Hiking in Austin 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a good basic book for finding the public hiking trails that are on the beaten path. It is very useful to find what is publically available. It isn't for finding those paths that are hard to find.

I do recommend it.

Editorial Review:

This practical guide takes readers to the best trails found in the Texas Hill Country, all within easy reach of San Antonio and Austin. Destinations include secluded, low-traffic areas for quiet hikes as well more popular and heavily used paths. The former LBJ Ranch, the Guadalupe River, the Highland Lakes Chain, and the Lost Pines area are a few of the spectacular treks featured.

Such a fun book! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable Disney fan, that being said I was hopeful for a new and interesting book of Disney facts. Well, boy did this deliver! The Lost Journal is full of fun facts, hidden Mickey's (some I knew of and some I didn't) and really interesting information about so many of the rides.

It was great to spend the afternoon reading this and remember all the places in the park where the hidden Mickey's might be, and planning our next trip to the parks. I will defiantly have this guide with me as we tour the parks again this summer, in search of all the clues to complete the puzzle in the front of it. This is a great book for kids as well, very easy to read and understand. The size is great and will fit perfectly in our backpack at the park.

I highly recommend this guide for all the Disney fans out there.

Smell The Smoke 5 out of 5 stars.

Follow the Smoke: 14,783 Miles of Great Texas Barbecue
Being a native Texan and living in Tx all my life I have found this book to be a trasure for a true barbecue lover. Now you don't have to be a Texan to enjoy this wonderful book. If you have ever ventured down to Tx and experience some Texas barbecue then you will also get a kick out of this book.

Editorial Review:

The product of a 14,000-mile road trip and 111 different meals, this delicious guidebook to Texas barbecue is just the thing for any aficionado with a little gas money and a large appetite. The restaurants profiled range from very plain (a shack with an ordering window) to fancy, from Port Arthur to Abilene, McAllen to Texarkana, and Austin to El Paso. Expressing an absolute reverence for Texas barbecue, this guide celebrates the work and time required to produce meat that is perfectly smoky, tender, and juicy.

Preaching to the choir. 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As a Nola expatriate, I was really looking forward to reading this book. I was very disappointed. It rambled, almost as if Mr. Piazza was so overwhelmed with love for his city (which I totally understand) that he couldn't organize his thoughts beyond effusion. It's too much preaching to the choir. I had hoped this book would pull those in who don't understand why we want to rebuild, who advocate for letting this culture and magnificence disappear! Piazza talks about the great restaurants and the wonderful music and eclectic personalities... He says *what's* important but he never communicates quite WHY. Living in the Midwest now and having a hard time defending why my city deserves to be saved, I read the book with a mindset of "what if I'd never been there". I was hoping this book could reach them, the naysayers. It doesn't. It can't. It's too caught up in itself. This book doesn't say why New Orleans should matter to those who currently care less; it's just a love letter. I can't imagine it will sway anyone who doesn't already have the context of living or visiting to understand his love.

Chris Rose's book, "1 Dead in Attic" somehow manages to do a fantastic job of this, even though his love for the city is just as great. Rose is a columnist for the local Times-Picayune. If you want to know why New Orleans matters, read his book instead.

I'd also recommend "Very New Orleans" by artist Diana Hollingsworth Gessler. Interestingly, this book is a compilation of detailed sketches and brief descriptions that capture the vibrancy of New Orleans in an incredibly uplifting way. I found myself smiling as I went through, page by page, not only remembering things I'd forgotten, but thinking to myself, "Now THIS is why New Orleans matters!!"

Editorial Review:

In the aftermath of Katrina and the disaster that followed, promises were made, forgotten, and renewed. Now what will become of New Orleans in the years ahead? What do this proud, battered city and its people mean to America and the world?

Award-winning author and longtime New Orleans resident Tom Piazza illuminates the storied culture and uncertain future of this great and neglected American metropolis by evoking the sensuous rapture of the city that gave us jazz music and Creole cooking; examining its deep undercurrents of corruption, racism, and injustice; and explaining how its people endure and transcend those conditions. And, perhaps most important, he asks us all to consider the spirit of this place and all the things it has shared with the world: its grace and beauty, resilience and soul.

Good but can be improved 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I love this kind of guide for all the images they show of the places you are going to see. The only problem I have is that there is no much information about accomodations. For that I had to look into another guide or online.

A Must Have Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best, most complete guides to Florida travel. I have several Florida guide and travel resources and find that I always go back to this book.

Editorial Review:

Florida can be divided into seven distinct regions, each corresponding to specific geographic and cultural criteria. Marshy Everglades, and tropical Keys occupy the south, while the vacation capital of Miami rises along the east coast. From the extravagant Gilded Age of manses and fantastic beaches of the Gold and Treasure Coasts to the amusement parks of Orlando, and St. Augustine's Spanish-Colonial era architecture in the Northeast, Florida is a region of stark contrasts. For more valuable travel information about art, shopping, entertainment, nightlife, hotels and sports look to Eyewitness Travel to Florida.
