Editorial Review:

Twenty-first century Austin has a reputation as a quirky, hip, culturally-diverse town that’s home to the world-famous South-by-Southwest music festival and the University of Texas Longhorns. It’s come a long way since Spanish explorers arrived circa 1709. Austin Then and Now rounds up all of the hot spots in a unique photographic history of Texas’ capital city.

• When Mirabeau Lamar succeeded Sam Houston as the President of the Republic of Texas, he moved the capital from Houston to Austin. The State Capitol that was eventually built in 1888 remains the largest statehouse in the U.S.

• Students will get a kick out of the side-by-side then-and-now photos of the University of Texas Tower and Main building — what was once a humble single building on 40 acres is now one of the largest public universities in the United States.

• Austin’s Driskill Hotel, one of the finest Victorian hotels in the west, has long been a destination for famous Texans. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson took Lady Bird to the Driskill on their first date!

• Austin’s most famous landmarks are featured, including the O. Henry House, the French Legation, the Governor’s Mansion, and other locations beloved by Texans.

Editorial Review:

The best reviewed full-color guide to Arizona hikes has now been updated and expanded with the most spectacular canyon, desert, and "sky island" trips in this dramatic state.

100 hikes, 10 new to this edition, with color photos and maps.

Now includes detailed topographic maps, elevation trail profiles, and a trails-at-a-glance chart indicating distance, level of difficulty, and seasonal considerations.

Includes a mix of trails from easy day trips, to never-dull loop hikes, to more remote long-distance treks. No hiking guide captures the beautifully complex and varied landscape of Arizona like Scott Warren's. Thoroughly updated and expanded with useful topographic maps and elevation trail profiles, this third edition of 100 Classic Hikes in Arizona offers a wide range of the state's most scenic hiking trails. You can stand in a mile deep canyon one day, hike through a saguaro cactus forest the next, and stand on a nearly 10,000 foot "sky island" in the Chiricahua Mountains yet another day. You can hike Lenox Crater, an actual volcano with a nearby lava flow, or lose yourself on Dutchman's Trail, a solitary long distance trek in the fabled Superstition Mountains.

This classic guide gives you the best trails for both day hikes and overnight backpacking trips in the state.

Hidden Southwest 4 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book in order to plan a 6 week trip to New Mexico and Arizona. If you want a book that will clearly and intelligently tell you about everything in these two states, this is a good option. Unfortunately, this book isn't very helpful in prioritizing sites. For example, I'm sure every single indian pueblo is listed, but it's difficult to tell which ones are worth allocating time to. Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent book, but, if this is your first visit to the area, you will need a more opinionated book to help you sift though the many, many sightseeing options.

Best places to stay 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I had earlier editions of this book and just loved them. We found the best places to stay, motels and bed and breakfasts that are really special, at a great price. I used this book for planning many trips to the Southwest, for myself and friends, and it was always a great experience. It is the best reference books on places to eat and to stay, phone numbers of attractions etc. You can find every place in the Southwest. However, I would still use another travel guide for more detailed information about e.g. national parks and monuments or specific hiking tips.

Editorial Review:

Drawing travelers from around the globe, the American Southwest is a picturesque blend of sandstone cliffs, slickrock mesas, bright lakes, vast deserts, and mountain peaks. "Hidden Southwest" reveals the spirit of this land and of the groups that have settled it, and gives tips on the best ways to enjoy the area's major attractions. 19 illustrations. 22 maps .

A must for both tourists and residents 5 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (8/06)

I've lived in Austin for over 16 years and was very interested in knowing what others say about it as well as what suggestions they might have. Needless to say, I found out much more than I anticipated and am grateful to have this wonderful reference book in my library now.

The authors condense much information into a concise, readable publication that could easily be carried in purse while trekking the area. It's also a great reference guide to have not only for out-of-town visitors, but for residents also.

The beginning of the book gives a quick overview while touching on politics and history. The remainder of the book covers hotels/motels, B and Bs, restaurants, night life, music scene, shopping as well as attractions, annual events, arts, recreation, and sports. For those wanting to move to Austin the authors address relocation as well as the senior scene, health care, education, schools and places of worship.

As I perused "Insiders' Guide® to Austin" I spent more time than I anticipated - in fact hours more, and not only that, this is a book that I will keep in my vehicle because not only does it give detailed information it also has pertinent maps that are easy to follow. Also, the restaurant guide is very in depth and I found many that we frequent and highly recommend, however, there are many others that I put on our "must try" list. The other section that was of particular interest to me was "kidstuff." I wish I had this book when our grandchildren were younger and came to visit. I often struggled trying to find fun activities for them to attend.

Whether you are a resident of the Austin area, or anticipating a visit or relocation, "Insiders' Guide® to Austin" is a must have. It has everything in it that you need to know, and more.

There are many reasons to like this book 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is highly informative, entertaining, and (must be) the definitive guide book for visiting any or all Texas wineries.

The informative aspect is not limited to a textbook about Texas grapes, wines and wineries, though it certainly could be used that way. It is much more. The Introduction is an excellent summary for novice or seasoned wine lovers--telling us about varieties of Texas grapes, terminology people use to describe wines and wine-making, and, of course, much information about how to taste wine so you can compare one wine with another and converse with others about wines if that is something you want to do.

Marshall dishes out detail so neatly that you hardly realize how much you are learning while you are engrossed in the stories of the wine-makers, their passions, and their products. Some of the difficulties they describe make you want to cry, but most are more humorous than defeating.

It is not surprising that Robert Mondavi would be so complementary about Marshall and his book. I think it is a book that readers will want to tell their friends about before they buy Texas wine or visit the wineries. I will keep it handy when in Texas as a useful reference book.

Editorial Review:

The Wine Roads of Texas is the premier guide to wines made in the nation s fifth-largest wine producing state. In his foreword, Robert Mondavi sees distinct parallels between the wine industries of Napa Valley in the 1950s and Texas today. For the second edition of this book, the inspiration for the three-part PBS series of the same name, Austin wine writer Wes Marshall scouted new wineries from Big Bend s Davis Mountains to the bayous of East Texas, from Dallas to Del Rio, from Galveston to Lubbock. This time there were nearly twice as many wineries to visit. Marshall met the vintners, listened to their stories and carefully tasted more than 1,000 wines to pick the best. He clues you in with: maps and directions to 82 Texas wineries, plus the dramatic stories of their origins, survival and growth; where to find food, shelter and fun on 22 wine trips through Texas; Picks of the best Texas wines; and tips on how to taste wine.

Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a neat little book. We have already eaten at some of the restaurants included, and the descriptions are right on. This book will go in the car for handy reference--can't wait to try out some of the eating places.

Cute! 3 out of 5 stars.

Interesting little book with some good information. However, it is very small and brief with very little detail and covers everything from cafes to barbecue restaurants.

A Nice Little Book 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have eaten at three of the places listed. All were accurately described and all are good in my opinion. If you are tired of the cookie-cutter restaurants that abound, then this book will be helpful. It describes "just plain eateries" with none of the usual sizzle.

Editorial Review:

The perfect book for people hoping to avoid homogenized chain food and discover some great eats wherever they travel in Texas. Author June Naylor tells you where knowlegeable locals eat, and what they know will be good at Kreuz Market in Lockhart, Babe's in Roanoke, Snoopy's in Corpus Christi, Perini's in Buffalo Gap and, among 60 others, Shirley's Burnt Biscuit in Marathon. Sized to fit your jean's pocket or glove compartment.
