It's like a virtual motorcyle trip. 5 out of 5 stars.

This books gives some pretty cool descriptions on different areas in the Southwest including Southwestern Colorado. My husband and I are familiar with the Colorado chapter and it was as though we were going through it again. Except it was in words and in our minds. My husband is going to take the recommendations and ride from the Chicago Area to the Taos New Mexico area. I will follow 2 days behind him with kids in tow. The author also provides valuable information on watering holes as well as places to eat. In desert areas you want to be prepared as to where the last gas station is. The author also gives explicit details on road conditions which makes the trip a lot easier to palette knowing where the "bad" spots are. Either you choose to ride gingerly through it or go around. I highly recommend this book. It's a good read and it contains lots of valuable information.

Editorial Review:

Discover the best touring roads the Southwest has to offer in this entertaining and informative guide. Berke describes 66 separate rides, each about one day in length. Each trip has been designed to include both great roads and great scenery, plus the best campgrounds, parks, scenic landmarks and restaurants to be found. Lists information on points of interest with prices, hours of operation and other helpful tips.

Interesting, but frustrating. 3 out of 5 stars.

To all of the worthwhile qualities of this book mentioned by other reviewers, I wish to add a deep, perplexing deficiency that will leave most any reader scratching his or her head.
The book has absolutely no chapter or regional designations for the hikes. They are merely numbered from Hike 1 to Hike 75 with no regional geographic categorization. This is a huge disservice to any purchaser, especially new hikers who may be interested in attempting some endeavor near them. Yes, the hike descriptions list a "general location" in the subtext of each entry, but how in the world does one choose an area of interest without pawing through a bunch of places identified only by number and name?
This book has no chapters. None. Simply "The Hikes" - one after another after another after another. If you wish to get out sticky notes or marker or razor knife to separate this thing into useable regions or chapters, by all means, have at it. This is the book for you.
As a hiker new to Texas, I am left frustrated and disappointed by this book and its lack of common sense organization and bookmaking courtesy.

Made our Key West vacation nearly perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book in the early stages of planning a Labor Day weekend trip to Key West. It was sheer luck that we chose this book, and now we can't imagine our first visit without it.

I am impressed with the book's balance of suggestions for traditional tourist destinations and quirky attractions. (I would have never thought to visit the Key West cemetery without her guidance.) Best of all were the dining suggestions. Louie's Backyard, Banana Cafe, Camille's and Mangoes were wonderful. At the top of the list was Blue Heaven! My memory of Blue Heaven's gumbo soup and yellowtail snapper will linger with me always.

June Keith's book made our Key West vacation nearly perfect. I will recommend it to anyone planning to go to the Keys.

A bowl-side companion 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The UNCLE JOHN'S BATHROOM READER series presents collections of one- and two- page trivia that are perfect for reading when diversion is required.

The PLUNGES INTO TEXAS volume focuses on a wide range of Texas lore, covering history, celebrity, food, politics, travel, and other bizarre bits of esoteric information. There are smidgens about the origin of Big Tex, the down-and-dirty personal life of Sam Houston, the ghostly cat who haunts the capitol, and the legality of dinning on road kill.

From LBJ to Red Adair to ZZ Top, stories about the movers and shakers of the Lone Star State offer the reader quick snippets to amuse and entertain while other business is at hand. No Texas home should be without it.

Editorial Review:

Especially for armchair (or throne room) travelers and trivia buffs, Uncle John has compiled over 300 pages of interesting stories, little known facts, and gossipy tidbits about the Lone Star State. This outsize state has no shortage of tall tales, colorful characters, and strange tourist attractions, and readers in any room in the house will be fascinated with the doings of Ima Hogg, George and George W., the Great Mosquito Festival, the first oil well, the Confederate Air Force, Larry McMurtry, LBJ, ZZ Top, Nolan Ryan, the Cadillac Ranch, the Dallas Cowboys (and Cowgirls), and much, much more.

Editorial Review:

Kinky Friedman, the original Texas Jewboy, takes us on a rollicking, rock-and-rolling tour of his favorite city: Austin.

Maybe you want to know which restaurant President Bush rates as his favorite Austin burger joint. Or maybe you want a glimpse of Willie Nelson’s home life (hint: Willie plays a lot of golf). Perhaps you want to get the best view of the Mexican free-tail bats as they make their nightly flights to and from the Congress Avenue Bridge. Or maybe you’re itching to learn the history of a city that birthed Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and countless other music legends. It’s all here in The Great Psychedelic Armadillo Picnic, the slightly insane, amazingly practical, and totally kick-ass guide to the coolest city in Texas by none other than Kinky Friedman.

This ain’t no ordinary travel guide, neither. “Like most other busy cities these days, Austin is not very effectively traversed by foot,” Kinky explains. “You must understand that ‘a walk in Austin’ is primarily a spiritual sort of thing.” As might be expected from this politically incorrect country-singer-turned-bestselling-mystery-author, the Kinkster’s tour includes a bunch of stuff you won’t ?nd in a Frommer’s guide, from descriptions of Austin’s notable trees and directions to skinny-dipping sites to lists of haunted places and quizzes and puzzles. So put on your cowboy hat and your brontosaurus-foreskin boots and head down south with the only book you need to get to the big heart of this great city.

Editorial Review:

The most well known and well loved mountain bike trail guide to the best summer and winter fat tire fun in Arizona. Cartoony, down to earth maps are adapted from topos and forest service charts, yet are friendly and easy to use. Maps are to scale and oriented north.

Each humorous route description includes distance, time, effort and skill required, best season to ride, level of route finding skill required, contour profile and "fear factor". There is also a step by step mileage log when applicable. A "preferred trail" icon is used to indicate a particularly great ride in a given area for those on a limited time schedule. Rides are included for all levels of ability, but emphasis is given to the intermediate / advanced rider. A few severe / extreme rides are also included for those on the lunatic fringe.

Each ride has been personally selected and ridden by the author over the past 11 editions and updated annually. You are guaranteed a favorite ride each time with no "filler". Many of the trails can be found nowhere else as they are based on personal exploration by the author. All rides are current and legal. Areas included are Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona, Phoenix, Tucson, Payson, Prescott and more. Also features a hilarious illustrated glossary of mountain biking's arcane jargon.

Useful and filled with Pictures! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The Southwest USA & Las Vegas travel guide is chock full of informative information, culture, and pictures in a streamline 300 page volume. Although personally, I think Las Vegas should be its own volume, I found the information about the Southwest quite helpful. I particularly appreciated the cultural information included and the fact that website addresses for most sites were included with the information blurb. This is a useful travel companion for those intending to see the four corners area and beyond!

A great start to planing a trip around the Southwest 5 out of 5 stars.

If you are planning to se the wonderful sights of the southwest this is an excellent book. It covers all of the national parks in Arizona and New Mexico as well as Las Vegas. If you are going to just Las Vegas or just the Grand Canyon I would recommend getting the more specific books than these but if you are looking for a regional book it cannot be beat. Highly recommend.

Covers: the Grand Canyon, Northern Arizona, Phoenix, Southern Arizona, Las Vegas, Southern Utah, the Four Corners, Santa Fe, Northern New Mexico, Albuquerque, and Southern New Mexico.

It's all you need for your trip 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If I could give this book 10 stars I would. The amount of detail and information it has is just amazing. Dave Hunter and his wife, Kathy, have made the trip to Florida much more fun and interesting. You can plan ahead for side trips, rest areas, even what gas stations and restaurants are miles down the road. I had an earlier version, but it is a good idea to update every other year as things change so often along I75. Get this great little book and you will learn things, even if you have driven this route all your life, as I have. If you are planning a trip down to Florida via I75, this should be your first purchase

Great Helpful Travel Guide ! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A few years ago, when we purchased a vacation home in Florida, friends gave us the I-75 Guide as a gift. How helpful it has been for all this time, as we traveled back and forth twice a year ! It came time to pack it for this spring's trip and it was nowhere to be found. When we reached Florida and it still had not revealed itself, we promptly ordered another one, updated for this year. We have found it extremely useful in passing through large cities (such as Atlanta) with minimal frustration and in locating facilites along the way. Knowing where gas stations, restaurants and motels are - exit by exit- makes it so much easier to plan your stops during the day. It has also been quite accurate in notations about natural phenomena along the way (kudzu vines, weeping rocks, deer sightings, etc.) Sightseeing information is also of interest and value. We have maps and guidebooks from other sources, but still like to have this one in addition. Keep up the good work !

Editorial Review:

If you drive on any section of Interstate-75 anywhere between Detroit, Michigan and the Florida border, this book is an absolute MUST. Full of practical information and roadside stories, this mile-by-mile guidebook entertains you and your passengers on your journey - it turns a boring drive into a fun trip.

If you liked Lonesome Dove you'll love The Texas Cowboy! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is Mr. Stoecklein's finest work to date! Through his camera lens were able to get a close up view of the life of a Texas Cowboy and his natural surrondings. What is most interesting about this photo essay is that it shows the diversity of Texas and how the cowboys have adapted to the land. One of my best friends is a Cowboy from Pampa, Texas and he went nuts for this book. Full of beautiful photography and illustrations, and imformative text, this is a must for anybody who shares a passion for the American West and what it stands for.

Capturing the Texas Cowboy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a book of superlative photography, capturing the essence of the Texas cowboy and his life--the dirt, the work, the gear, the animals, the life. Stoecklein has a love for the West that dances joyously through his work.

Editorial Review:

The Texas Cowboys offers an intimate view of every region in Texas. Featuring twenty-three of the oldest, most prestigious ranches in America today. Tom B. Saunders IV, a fifth-generation Texas rancher, tells the story of his home state and its legends, collected over the years from family and friends. Complementing the photographs and text are beautiful paintings and illustrations by the famous Texas artist, Bob Moline.
