New and Improved...notably improved...well worth buying 5 out of 5 stars.

My copy of the fourth edition of this map is worn out from use. Many of its pages have been torn out for backpacking or hitchhiking trips and then taped back in, many of my favorite roads have been highlighted and annotated, and its corners are all bent and scuffed from the map being stuffed beneath car seats and thrown into tents. I like that edition a lot, but I've always had complaints about it: its contents were detailed and accurate, but hard to access...it had maps of both public and private and urban areas, but were hard to correlate with one another. And there were certain areas that weren't noted, and that should have been.
However, with the latest addition of Benchmark's "New Mexico Road and Recreation and Atlas," almost all of my complaints have faded away, and my opinion of this map and this company have risen considerably.
Where before the information was hard to access, now the back of the mapbook has the entire state divided into a simple numbered grid, and every number over every area corresponds to a page on the map.
For instance, say I want to see a map of the Bootheel area. On the back it's labeled 48. I turn to page 48, and there it is, in full detail.
Then, if I'd like to see a map of that same area, but with the public lands featured more prominently, I just look on the top of the page I was on, page 48, and it tells me clearly, and with a diagram, to turn to page 80. and on page 80, there's exactly what I needed. Hooray!
It's great. If I had any complaints about it, it's that La Madera Road, my favorite dirt road of all time--between San Antonito and Madrid--could have a little more detail, and a few more of that area's ghost towns and historic features could have been noted. Overall however, I would recommend this map to anyone, as one of the very best I've seen of the state. (Now I want to buy their maps for the other Four Corners states as well.) I'm sure in a few years my new copy will look even more beat up than my last copy--and I can't wait to start to make it look that way.

Editorial Review:

It’s been over a decade since the release of this, Benchmark's first atlas. For the 10th Anniversary Edition, Benchmark has drafted completely new Landscape Maps™ and Public Lands maps, both at larger scales, with far more field-checked information than before. A complete Recreation Guide has been added, covering important outdoor recreation categories and interests, and new enlargements of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos are now included.

Great guide 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I took this guide book with me on my first visit to LA recently. I was interested in doing all of the typical tourist things. This book was indispensable. I also bought Frommer's guide book and I never opened it.

I rented a car and traveled through LA. I was driving alone and the maps in this book were a huge help. They are very detailed and held up through being thrown in the car and in and out of bags. The pictures are great. The decriptions are short and to the point. I also loved the size of this book. It is small enough to easily carry in a larger purse or backpack.

I didn't use the Top 10 book to plan my trip - only what to do and where to go when I got there. A more detailed book might serve you better if you need help decided where to stay and what hotels to use.

You can't go wrong with this guide book - it is really the only guidebook you need for LA.

Editorial Review:

Perfect for the numerous historic and artistic sights, friendly people, great cuisine, and stunning views - this is the ideal guide to explore Naples and the surrounding regions.

Bay Area parks and preserves offer a dramatic variety of landscapes, from rugged redwood-forested canyons to breezy coastal bluffs, grassy rolling hills to sunny chaparral-coated hillsides. Well-known destinations such as Point Reyes National Seashore, Mount Diablo State Park, Mount Tamalpais State Park, and many other more obscure jewels of the Bay Area park system are just a short drive from the heart of San Francisco. 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Francisco guides readers to a splendid assortment of trails in the 9 counties surrounding one of the world's most beautiful cities. A gentle Mediterranean climate encourages year round hiking and provides such seasonal splendors as carpets of colorful wildflowers, rushing waterfalls, and creekbeds littered with maple and oak leaves. Whether hikers crave a quick and easy get-out-of-town stroll or a challenging day-long trek through wilderness, this book is the perfect trailblazer, for City natives and first-time visitors alike.

Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I just came back from the vacation in Alaska last night. I came from China one year ago and had this vacation all by myself. Thanks for this book, my trip was fantastic! I used this book for trip planning, like booking hotels. And I had it on my way always. Information in this book is very updated and really helpful. On the last several blank pages, I got some stamps of national parks, as well as contact information of many friends made in this trip. I'll keep this book, which will make me recall all the great details of my trip. And I will recommend this book all my friends who are interested in traveling in Alaska.

Another "two thumbs up" for campers and rv'rs 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

See also my review on NW rv destinations. I know the NW pretty well but am always looking for better and cheaper ways to travel around, hide out, and explore. For ecomony camping and rv'ing this is the book. A little cheaply done (newsprint type paper) this 440 pp reference guide is full of all the little hidey holes and cheaper places to hang out. Much more fine detail for this geographical area than say Trailer Life's RV Directory. Has complete information and prices on all the out of the way and mainline economical places to stay. Does not include commercial places like Wal-Mart, Cracker Barrel, etc. Very broad coverage (Entire Western US). While on you way to a destination park you can explore these out of the way and local money savers. Such camps usually don't have full hooks ups, but for ~ $12 or less who cares, you can boondock for a a night can't you -- maybe even a whole weekend!

Please clean up after your pets and keep them controlled. An increasing number of camps are not allowing pets due to owners' abuse of this privilege. Its not the dog's fault. Our Miniature Schauzer loves to RV and we love taking him, but are often dismayed by the number of parks that will not allow pets anymore.

Editorial Review:

Lists, alphabetically by state and city, all campgrounds where overnight camping fees of $12 or less are charged. It provides its buyers with an opportunity to save significantly on their travel costs when current overnight camping fees are typically $25 to $50 per night. The Western Edition now contains an enormous number of county and city parks with free or low-cost overnight camping as well as campgrounds of the national forests, national parks, bureau of land management, bureau of reclamation, Army Corps of Engineers and most state park systems.

Editorial Review:

Faces of Sunset Boulevard: A Portrait of Los Angeles is a collection of photographs of the people who live, work, play, and shape Los Angeles. Some are making fortunes along the route; others are just trying to survive to see another day. Patrick Ecclesine captures the city’s dreams, dreamers, and, at times, nightmares using the most famous boulevard in the world as the setting for his photographs.

The individuals featured range from the famous (Governor Schwarzenegger, Larry King, Fernando Valenzuela) to the unknown (a street vendor, an undocumented worker, a bus driver) to the unwanted (a homeless man, a single mother on welfare, a drug addict).

Other archetypal Angeleno figures—from a television weathergirl sensation to a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon to surfers in Pacific Palisades to the eccentric and outlandish denizens of the Sunset Strip—stand side by side in these pages, capturing the eclectic nature of the City of Angels and its most colorful thoroughfare, Sunset Boulevard.

Halka Chronic's "Arizona" 5 out of 5 stars.
50 of 51 people found this review helpful.

Yesterday I threw my "Roadside Geology of Arizona" away -- for the third time. Like the two copies before them, my latest had lasted about five years in my truck's door pocket, and it had gotten to the point that there was simply more duct tape holding the book together than there was paper, and at least four pages had disappeared.

That's the way it is with any book by Halka Chronic. The folks who buy them, use them -- and usually use them up. I have had three "Arizona", two each "Colorado" and "New Mexico" and am on my third "Utah" Roadside series. I would no more drive somewhere without these books than I would without five gallons of water in the Southwest desert summers.

The first chapter or two of all these books is a Geology 101 of the State -- including terms, an historical timeline, and discussion of the latest geological theories that have any bearing at all on the landforms you will see from your car or truck as you drive across the state.

Then coomes the good part -- a series of chapters with exciting names like "Route 60; Globe to Mesa". As you drive, your companion reads the book, keyed to mile-markers, freeway exit ramps, small towns, etc. Every rill, dike, escarpment -- even the various colored rocks you see as you ride through the roadcuts on the freeway -- are explained. Follow the highways in the book, and you're and expert on Arizona geology.

But it's never that simple, of course. Soon you're taking your friends and relatives from out of town through those same trips, showing them the beauties of your state that Halka Chronic helps make come alive. Out comes the book again and again, and finally it begins to fall apart from sheer, joyous use.

That's why I threw away my third "Roadside Geology of Arizona" yesterday. But don't worry, I already bought my fourth copy -- and I'm sure I'll buy my fifth in another five years or so.

Editorial Review:

Roadside Geology of Hawai`i details the evolution of this volcanic island chain, from the origin of a hot spot and the tumultuous creation of each island to ongoing eruptions and the gradual death and erosion of old volcanoes. Residents and tourists alike will soon become experts on lava tubes and lava flows, ancient beaches and coral reefs, ephemeral black sand beaches and the occasional tsunami. Includes a chapter each on six easily accessible and populated islands: Hawai`i , Maui, Lana`i, Moloka`i, O`ahu, and Kaua`i. Each chapter begins with a general discussion of the rocks of that island, then proceeds with a seres of road guides that provide the local details.
