So many errors! 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I made the terrible mistake of touring Idaho with an old (1994) edition of the DeLorme Idaho Atlas. Fortunately I had a whole sackful of BLM and Forest Service maps to get me out of tight situations caused by relying on DeLorme's information. The atlas shows roads that are not there, and does not show roads that are there. The land management boundaries are incorrect in many crucial instances, and sites are drastically misplaced.

I very much like the additional topographical information in the new edition, but I also noticed they did not correct any of the cartographic errors. So-- fine for casual use or for general trip planning, but contact the BLM or Forest Service before you head out on the back roads.

Getting most out of minimal time 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The entire series of Falcon Guides: THE BEST EASY DAY HIKES xxxxx are a delight to read and then follow. For those with a minimal amount of time to see vistas, canyons, and other scenery in parks and other areas of the country you can really experience a good variety of the locale by taking any of the hikes in these books.

I have about a dozen of these books, mostly of the western US and have referenced all of them in my hiking plannings. They are pocket size which makes them easy to carry with you and easy to read an understand.

Editorial Review:

19 short easy day hikes showcase the best features of the parks, with information on elevation change, average time required to complete the hike, directions to the trailhead and the key points of each hike. The hikes vary in length but most are less than 5 miles. This guidebook is for everyone, including families.

A great "Road" Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

If you're going to travel in "Indian country" you need to keep this one in the front seat. Your companion can read while you drive. This book is recommended in the conclusion of The Native American Indian Artist Directory. Along with The Field Guide to Southwest Indian Arts and Crafts you can have a great adventure in the Southwest. Read Kosik and Hardeen's book first. Then read the Field Guide to learn about the art along the "Native Roads." Then open up The Native American Indian Artist Directory and find an address or phone number for the artist that interests you most and have a memorable experience!!

Editorial Review:

This newly revised and updated guide provides all the essential information travelers need to explore the spectacular buttes and secret canyons of the Navajo and Hopi Nations (together they cover an area bigger that Maine). Native Roads is packed with detailed maps, points of interest, landmarks, and even tips on culturally sensitive etiquette. Here's where to find Navajo and Hopi hospitality in fine restaurants and lodgings, and also where to witness ancient cultures vibrantly alive in the modern world. 100 b/w photographs and illustrations.

Great Anticipation, Disappointing Results 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When I originally saw this book, I was highly interested because I find Colorado to be a beautiful state and photographic history to be a fascinating topic. Unfortunately, many of the retakes are uninteresting (as stated in another review) and are technically lacking (poor choice in time of day, cloud cover, or just flat out blown highlights (I counted eight photographs with blown highlights on a cursory glance through the book)).

On the plus side, the historical images are worth examining -- simply seeing photographs over 130 years old is intriguing, and the descriptions accompanying these photographs give you a sense of just how pioneering a lot of this work was.

I don't own Colorado I, I have a hard time imagining that it would be as disappointing as Colorado II. The historical photographs are beyond reproach, but I can't shake the feeling that Fielder barely gave any compositional consideration to the modern photographs.

A lovely companion volume 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

For those who enjoyed the first volume, Volume II is a lovely companion book. In an interview, John Fielder explained that he could only put so many photos in the first volume, but going back through the hundreds of pictures that didn't make it in, he realized there were many more that were just as deserving to be published. I'm thrilled to include this book in my collection and highly recommend it for Colorado history lovers.

Editorial Review:

Internationally renowned photographer Lucian Niemeyer and National Park Service historian Art Gómez have combined talents in a new presentation on New Mexico. Niemeyer’s more than 150 color photographs encompass the entire state throughout the seasons presenting New Mexico’s people, cultures, and magnificent scenery at the millennium. Gómez’s sweeping history views the state in terms of corridors, geographic as well as cultural. New Mexico’s mountains, deserts, and rivers form natural corridors that migrating birds and animals have traditionally used for survival. Navigating these same corridors across the state, human cultures of Paleo, Plains and Pueblo Indians, Hispanos, and Anglos forged viable communities on the astringent New Mexican landscape.

Pueblo ancestors migrated from austere environments throughout the Southwest to more inviting surroundings on the Rio Grande. Plains Indians from the north and Hispano tradesmen from the south converged via the Camino Real. American settlers migrated west along the Santa Fe Trail, the southernmost corridor around the formidable Rocky Mountains. Improved transportation such as the railroad and later Route 66, precursors to the interstate highway system, annually lured new inhabitants to this compelling land called New Mexico.

Perfect for families, sightseers, and people with busy schedules—includes "user-friendly" charts for easy selection of just the right outing.

·More than 60 short hikes (ranging from a fraction of a mile to just over 7 miles round trip)
·A mix of popular hikes and little-known gems showcasing scenic Arizona
·Many hikes in or accessible from major metro areas plus destination parks and landmarks

Don and Barbara Laine present the best of the best of Arizona’s short hikes—with an emphasis on "user-friendly." To make selection easy, a "Hikes at a Glance" chart lists trails by distance, elevation gain, difficulty, and location. Other charts list hikes by best places to admire rock formations, see desert plant life, enjoy scenic views, explore historic and prehistoric sites, relax along a shady stream or lake, take the kids, or see wildlife. Important details such as entry fees, restrooms, drinking water, and campground information are listed up front; there’s a map and elevation profile for each hike.

That’s to say nothing of the breadth of experiences (from sandy desert floor to steep mountainside and riparian environment) awaiting you; or the detailed trail descriptions with tips on where Hollywood movies were filmed and background on old cabins and mines. Most hikes are rated easy or moderate—making them perfect for families—plus a selection of more strenuous hikes.

Regions include the Phoenix, Sedona, Tucson/southern Arizona, and Flagstaff/northeastern Arizona areas; the Grand Canyon (north and south rims) and Petrified Forest National Parks; and Organ Pipe and Chiracahua National Monuments.

Absolutely Exquisite Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

UTAH by Fred Hirschmann is one of the most exquisite coffee table books I have ever seen! The large, hardback book has over 200 of the most breath-taking images you can imagine. In the last few pages of the book Hirschmann, a world-renowned outdoors and wildlife photographer, tells how he shot the images, which cameras, lenses, and film he used (information for other real photographers.) For the rest of us, the photographs are given simple labels telling where in Utah they were shot. Utah is known to have the most unique and the most photographed landscapes in the United States, so it is difficult for a photographer to find views that are different. However, Hirschmann is an intrepid hiker and extremely patient in waiting for the perfect conditions for the photo he imagines. Most people will think the amazing photos in this book have been enhanced or shot with special filters to get the brilliant colors, but they have not. Hirschmann is just that great a photographer who knows how to choose the scenes and how to capture the perfect light. This is an incredible book. Give yourself or a friend this gift today.

Editorial Review:

Hiking from Here to WOW: Utah Canyon Country guides hikers to the most compelling destinations in southern Utah's spectacular canyon country. This second book in the new full-color WOW series covers 90 trails that epitomize the "wonder of wilderness."

In their years of their research, the authors hiked over 1600 miles through Zion, Bryce, Escalante-Grand Staircase, Glen Canyon, Grand Gulch, Cedar Mesa, Canyonlands, Moab, Arches, Capitol Reef, and the San Rafael Swell. They took more than 2000 photos and hundreds of pages of field notes. Then they culled their list of favorite hikes down to 90--each selected for its power to incite awe. Coverage ranges from short dayhikes to multi-day backpacking adventures. The book describes precisely where to find the redrock cliffs, slickrock domes, soaring arches, and ancient ruins that make southern Utah unique. It offers the boot-tested advice you need to create rewarding adventures. And it does so in a refreshing style--honest, literate, entertaining, and inspiring.

The book's full-color interior features 220 striking photographs, engaging text, and a trail map for each dayhike and backpack trip.

Backcountry Roads - Idaho 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For the past thirty years, hikers, climbers, and motorized explorers of Idaho's backcountry have had a steadily increasing number of guides from which to choose. Some of these include a few photographs and all describe, in lesser or greater detail, routes, distances, difficulty, etc., of trails. Today, I received my copy of "Backcountry Roads-Idaho," and I have to say there is not a guide that even comes close to this peerless publication. The Howard's have set a standard that perhaps will never be surpassed. Lynna's prose gently guides you by the hand, and Leland's photography literally puts your mind in these locations. Even armchair travelers or those just wanting to take a scenic drive will love this book. I cannot imagine someone buying this book and not taking one or more of these excursions. If you do, buy two books: one to accompany you and the other to take its rightful place among other coffee table books in your living room, study, or library, for this book is a wonderful blend of history, geography, geology, and, of course, travel adventure. If I could rate this book as 10 stars, it would not be enough.

Editorial Review:

Backcountry Roads- Idaho is a beautiful, informative and practical guide to the Gem State's hidden treasure of roadways. Enhanced by 140 photos from award-winning photographer Leland Howard, Backcountry Roads-Idaho is a rarity, a guidebook that is also a work of art.
Award-winning outdoor writer Lynna Howard provides GPS coordinates, expedition maps, and detailed descriptions for would be explorers. Her creative flair brings backcountry travel to life with an immediacy that engages all the senses. This is an indispensable tool for anyone who wishes to experience firsthand the rugged beauty of scenic Idaho.
