Save time; take better vacation snapshots 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

Gustav Verderber was right on the money about everything in this book. If you only have a week to explore, save yourself some time and follow his instructions. He has mapped out when the rainbows appear on the falls, gives advice on where to photograph wildlife. Some of the trails he mentions in his book have since been closed due to erosion or wildlife management but if you talk with the Park Ranger Service (not Xanterra!) you should be able to find a comparable walk to capture the images.

The book may be beneath the experienced photographer but for an amateur who just wants better vacation photos and does not have the luxury to spend a year in the park getting them, this is the perfect guide!

Editorial Review:

Expert photography advice the author provided to visitors to Yellowstone when he served there as the Kodak Ambassador in Yellowstone National Park.

This guide is designed to allow the average visitor to comfortably manage the vast abundance of subjects within Yellowstone National Park and to answer the crucial questions of what is worth photographing and how to do that in a way that will result in postcard-perfect photos of the park's landscapes and wildlife. An appendix provides a suggested itinerary to plan a visit to each district. No park visitor should be without it.

Editorial Review:

The face of Arizona has changed dramatically over the centuries-but for those who know where to look, the coyote still howls, waterfalls still tumble into deep red rock canyons, and some of nature's finest handiwork is still to be seen along the backroads and byways of the state. For the open-road adventurer or the armchair tourist, Backroads of Arizona is the ideal guide to the state where antelope still roam, cowboys still ride the range, and mail is still delivered by mule train. Jim Hinckley's informative text and Kerrick James' brilliant color photography reveal the Grand Canyon State as more than just desert and towering saguaros: It is a powerful land of compelling variety where a mere sixty-mile drive can transport you from scorching sands to dense evergreen stands where deer and elk roam. Continuing on Voyageur Press’ successful travel series, Backroads of Arizona takes you on more than twenty trips to the state’s most notable and underappreciated sites. The book covers Arizona’s plethora of awe-inspiring natural areas and national parks as well as its many historic sites, including Native American Pueblos and ancient ruins, ghost towns and vestiges of the Old West, and more. It is a fitting celebration of one of the most scenic states in the country.

Worth Every Penny 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I've lived in Colorado since 1989 and have spent an unbelievable amount of time in the mountains here. I purchased the first edition of this book at a little gift shop at the top of Monarch Pass, gave it a permanent home in my Jeep, and I haven't looked back since. It's a fairly pricey book, but given the accuracy of the information contained within, not to mention the time and effort it takes to amass that information, it's worth every penny and then some. Mr. Wells has driven every trail personally, and the maps, presumably created from a fusion of USGS maps and personal observation are very clear and useful.

Apart from the individual trail guides, which are laid out cleverly using Colorado's ski slope difficulty symbols (green circle for easy, blue square for moderate, black diamond for difficult), there is a lucid and very in-depth introduction as well. This isn't a couple of hastily written paragraphs admonishing you to use caution and get out there and have fun, but rather a nearly 20-page essay on how to be a safe, conscientious, and well-informed backroad and trail driver. It's very useful and relevant information, thoughtfully and intelligently presented.

Bottom line: If you plan to explore Colorado's wonderful backroads and trails, buy this book, period. Give me this book, my GPS, camping supplies, food and drink, and my camera, and I could happily wander the Colorado Rockies in my Jeep for weeks!

Editorial Review:

Completely redone second edition has been expanded to 75 trails....25 all new. Book includes detailed directions with GPS waypoints, 83 custom maps and over 425 quality photos. All trails are south of Interstate 70 and were redriven by the author. Twenty-five trails are easy, 25 moderate and 25 difficult. Easy and moderate trails are suitable for most stock sport utility vehicles.

Very good book 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I went on the Grand Cirlce trip (Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, and Glen Canyon/Lake Powell) and found this book very helpful in planning my trip. I gave it a 4 star only because it doesn't give the time required for each trip. For example, for the drive to Temple of Sun and Moon, from the book, it seemed like a 30 minute trip. However, from a separate source, it said the drive takes 2-3 days to finish. Nevertheless, still a good source.

EVERYONE should see Utah 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

We traveled all over Utah with this book and started to think of it as the Bible of Traveling Utah. Would highly recommend. Saw places that we would have missed if not for this book. Used it daily to plan our days.

Great driving guide 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I used this book on my recent driving trip to Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands. It was a real highlight on the trip. My friend, who was navigator, used it for "color commentary" on the drive. It's also a great supplement to other guidebooks such as Frommer's and Lonely Planet.

My only criticism is that the maps and illustrations would be better in color and the text is a bit verbose. In spite of those bits, it's still five stars.

Editorial Review:

From the lush alpine terrain of the Uinta and Wasatch Mountains to the fantastic rock formations of Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, and Bryce Canyon National Parks, discover Utah's treasures. This guide features twenty-eight drives that highlight the natural and cultural history of the land of the Great Salt Lake.

Simply the best photographic guides to this amazing scenery 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you're planning a tour of the American Southwest these brilliant books are simply the best possible guide to what to photograph, and how. In three volumes Martrès guides you to all the photographic highlights of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. At the well known tourist spots he tells you what and when to shoot for best results, but he's also not afraid to take you off the beaten path to some less frequently visited scenic gems.

I've just completed a photographic holiday following roughly the traditional "grand circle" route, and I couldn't have got some of my most successful shots without these books.

The author provides consistent, detailed instructions for each location, including guidance on lenses and timing. Sometimes he even tells you which rock to stand on! Follow his instructions carefully, and you'll usually get good results, although some instructions require careful interpretation.

It's also great fun shouting "snap!" when you realise the only other souls in some lonely location are also clutching a copy of the same book.

All three volumes have recently been updated, with high quality colour photos throughout, and a comprehensive index of locations including ratings for accessibility and scenic and photographic value, invaluable if a tight schedule means making difficult choices.

I'm already planning my next trip using volume 3! Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

The Photographing the Southwest guidebook series is the culmination of over twenty years experience exploring and photographing the natural landmarks of the Southwest. Volume 3 will take you on a remarkable journey of discovery from the vast plains of Northwestern Colorado to the deserts of Southern New Mexico, exploring geological marvels, sand dunes, the alpine scenery of the San Juan and Rocky Mountains with their incredible wildflowers and fall colors, ancient cliff dwellings, old mining towns, Spanish New Mexico, and Indian Pueblos . We also make a short foray into Texas to visit Big Bend National Park.

I purchased this book for a recent trip to Los Angeles, and found it to be a valuable resource for finding interesting hiking spots. Some photos from that trip and others can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pstao/

I would definately recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the outdoors, and exploring the natural beauty that persists throughout Southern California.

An incredibly well-researched book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I think the vast majority of us, even if we lived in Estes Park and had an idea to write such a book, would have given up when we grasped the enormity of hiking to every named destination in Rocky Mountain National Park (and several in the neighboring national forests). Lisa Foster didn't. Even though she was ill and often had to hike alone, she persevered. This was truly a labor of love, because not many of us are going to scale the Spearhead or numerous other destinations that require off-trail route finding and 3,500-plus elevation gains. The trail descriptions are very good, and Lisa does not seem to run out of adjectives to describe the splendor. That in itself is an accomplishment well worth noting. The photographs are also spectacular, giving the hiker an idea of the reward for huffing and puffing yourself up a mountain trail. (I've visited the park 16 times since 1995, and I always forget how difficult hiking can be.) Lisa, my hat is off to you.

Detailed, informative, comprehensive. 5 out of 5 stars.

Whether you are a serious hiker wanting to explore the remote regions of one of the treasures of the US Park system or just want a simple afternoon hike to see a little bit of Rocky Mountain National Park this book will provide all you need. It has excellent topo maps, great descriptions of the trails, lots of information on what to expect and lovely photographs to entice you on. It's printed on heavy, high quality paper in full color; it feels good to the hand. It would make a great gift for the friend who's heading off to explore RMNP!

Perfect for a roadtrip 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this along with some other park books for a 2 week roadtrip I recently took. It was by far the most useful of the guidebooks I bought. If you are going to one specific park buy books specific to it, but if you are roadtripping and plan on visiting a few, it is far easier to get this book and not have to hassle with a car full of books. Frommer's guidebooks are by no means the best guides every written, but they are quite adequate. The information was pertinent and useful. 3.5 stars for the quality of the content (uninspired but useful), 5 stars for convenience. 4.25 stars overall.
