Restaurant reviews were right on 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We were staying with a local in Taos whose restaurant reviews for the area echoed the ones in the book. One of the restaurant listings even mentioned the exact dish she always get at that locale (Tres Colores).

One addition - try to make happy hour at The Alley (the oldest building in town, used to be a trading post) which is just steps off the plaza (where they have free concerts on Thursday nights in the summer) for some really incredible (and cheap) margaritas.

We didn't go wrong with the restaurant or tourist attraction recommendations in Albuquerque either. I thought this was a GREAT guide!

Align your chakras at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, where stressed-out Pueblo Indians soaked for millennia p124. Play `Name That Georgia O'Keeffe Painting' and re-enact scenes from City Slickers in Abiquiú p122. Admire your new turquoise bracelet glinting in the sun as you search for deals on cow skulls in Albuquerque p169. The Book You've Been Waiting For... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoy hiking and camping in the backcountry of Colorado and I'm always curious about new places to hike. So when I saw this book I was intrigued and very curious about what it had to offer.
Using this guide for a couple hikes its definitely become the best guide book I've used as it's very easy to use in the field, it's engaging with a unique author flare, thorough and very interesting. A definite "must have" to add to your guide book collection.
What attracted me to this book was the beautiful pictures on the cover and the diversity of hikes, many I've not heard of before, within its pages! Hike and Trailhead descriptions are written in an easy to follow manner and the directions have been thorough and very accurate. It's obvious that a lot of time was spent researching these aspects. It's also really helpful that the intro page to each hike has an elevation graph, a mile by mile break down of the hike, interesting things you'd expect to see on the hike and wheather its a good day hike or one for camping. Also what's made the book a great guide in my opinion are the maps with GPS coordinates and the interesting tid-bits of historical info. included at the end of each hike description. Even more are the fun trivia questions in the Appendix section of the book! I've learned some really neat things so far!
From cover to cover this a great guide and I am happy to have bought it!

Editorial Review:

Author James Dziezynski has meticulously selected 80+ of the state's absolute best peak hikes in over 50 superlative hikes, and provides opinionated narrative that brings each route to life. Each summit is included because of a notable feature--whether it's the site of an abandoned mine or airplane wreckage, has thundering waterfalls or colorful floral meadows, is the best summit for spotting wildlife or bringing out-of-town friends, or is very accessible. Some peaks offer unique opportunities, such as a trailhead accessible only via a steam-powered railroad. Several summits are described in no other publication. Covering all the Colorado's major mountain ranges, including well-known Sangre De Cristo, Gore, Sawatch, Indian Peaks, and Maroon Bell wilderness areas to the lesser-known Grenadiers, Medicine Bow, and Outer San Juan peaks, this distinctive guide makes it easy to select exactly the right hike for the right day, the right mood, and the right companions.

Used this every day of our trip 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

We used this book every day we were in Yellowstone. It was such a help in planning each day, knowing where to stop, what to expect in terms of how long hikes were, finding restaurants and shops, etc. I would read the information about each place aloud to the kids, which helped pass the time between stops. One word of caution, though. We are not the type of family that does a lot of hiking, camping, climbing, etc. We did find that some of her descriptions of the difficulty of the hikes and trails were a bit underestimated. Between the heat and the altitude, this is important to keep in mind! Other than that, I think this is a must have!

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was right on the money with all the things to see while driving through the parks. In combination with this book Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks (Outdoor Family Guides) and the Trails Illustrated maps of both parks:
Trails Illustrated Yellowstone Map Old Faithful
Trails Illustrated Mammoth Hotsprings Yellowstone National Park NW
Trails Illustrated Tower Canyon Yellowstone National Park NE
Trails Illustrated Yellowstone Lake Yellowstone National Park SE
National Geographic Trails Illustrated Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA: Topo Map (Trails Illustrated - Topo Maps USA)
(which can also be purchased at http://www.ngmapstore.com), we had a very easy time getting around the park and where things were located. It made planning a whiz!

A good start to an interesting state 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

For those looking for a simple overview of what to do in Arizona this is a great place to start. While it has information that travels in the United States may not need it offers great advice on hotels and the pictures really get you excited about your trip. .The recommendations are excellent and the book is very helpful for the Grand Canyon.

Eyewitness Arizona Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

Love it! I will only purchase the Eyewitness series of guide books because they're loaded with easy to find information and tons of photos. Their maps and guides of where to eat or stay have been consistently accurate. They make travel a breeze. And when I'm going somewhere that I don't have enough time to see everything, these guides make it easier to decided because of the detailed descriptions with photos. This Arizona guide was great and I'll be using it again and again.

Editorial Review:

This heavily illustrated guide to Arizona and the Grand Canyon is packed with the best outdoor activities, as well as special features on history and culture, plus a comprehensive guide to what to eat and where to stay.

Halka Chronic's "Arizona" 5 out of 5 stars.
51 of 52 people found this review helpful.

Yesterday I threw my "Roadside Geology of Arizona" away -- for the third time. Like the two copies before them, my latest had lasted about five years in my truck's door pocket, and it had gotten to the point that there was simply more duct tape holding the book together than there was paper, and at least four pages had disappeared.

That's the way it is with any book by Halka Chronic. The folks who buy them, use them -- and usually use them up. I have had three "Arizona", two each "Colorado" and "New Mexico" and am on my third "Utah" Roadside series. I would no more drive somewhere without these books than I would without five gallons of water in the Southwest desert summers.

The first chapter or two of all these books is a Geology 101 of the State -- including terms, an historical timeline, and discussion of the latest geological theories that have any bearing at all on the landforms you will see from your car or truck as you drive across the state.

Then coomes the good part -- a series of chapters with exciting names like "Route 60; Globe to Mesa". As you drive, your companion reads the book, keyed to mile-markers, freeway exit ramps, small towns, etc. Every rill, dike, escarpment -- even the various colored rocks you see as you ride through the roadcuts on the freeway -- are explained. Follow the highways in the book, and you're and expert on Arizona geology.

But it's never that simple, of course. Soon you're taking your friends and relatives from out of town through those same trips, showing them the beauties of your state that Halka Chronic helps make come alive. Out comes the book again and again, and finally it begins to fall apart from sheer, joyous use.

That's why I threw away my third "Roadside Geology of Arizona" yesterday. But don't worry, I already bought my fourth copy -- and I'm sure I'll buy my fifth in another five years or so.

Editorial Review:

Roadside Geology of Hawai`i details the evolution of this volcanic island chain, from the origin of a hot spot and the tumultuous creation of each island to ongoing eruptions and the gradual death and erosion of old volcanoes. Residents and tourists alike will soon become experts on lava tubes and lava flows, ancient beaches and coral reefs, ephemeral black sand beaches and the occasional tsunami. Includes a chapter each on six easily accessible and populated islands: Hawai`i , Maui, Lana`i, Moloka`i, O`ahu, and Kaua`i. Each chapter begins with a general discussion of the rocks of that island, then proceeds with a seres of road guides that provide the local details.

The best travel guide - period! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

We recently moved to Colorado and purchased about a dozen travel guides to help us get oriented. Oddball Colorado was one we just sort of grabbed in the melee. My wife and I would burst out in spontaneous laughter as we read it. Rather than read it cover to cover, I found myself bouncing around from page to page. Just when I thought I had finished it I would discover another golden nugget I had overlooked. It was a sad day when I realized I had finally finished it!

Now all other travel guides seem inconsequential. Pohlen identifies the natural wonders that really matter (to me!). The cheesy roadside attractions that seemed to capture my father's big station wagon with their tractor beams. Reading the book is like taking a ride with my dad all over again.

Now I've moved onto Oddball Illinois. And I thought nothing could make me want to visit Illinois!

Editorial Review:

A high-altitude alligator farm. A UFO watchtower. A monument to a headless chicken. While other travel guides tell you about tackling Pike's Peak, skiing the back bowls, or rafting down the Arkansas River, this quirky regional resource offers unusual travel destinations and little-known historical titbits. Imagine regaling co-workers with unique Rocky Mountain adventures, like spending an evening at a drive-in movie...in a queen-sized bed, or visiting a vapour cave clad only in a towel. How about seeing a two-headed dragon made of car parts, or watching cliff divers while eating Mexican food?

We used this travel guide on our recent trip to Arizona. We had never been to Arizona before,so we used the rating system to help us chose what not to miss. We are so glad we took the time to use it to research ahead of time. We had a great trip with the help of Frommer's Arizona 2008!

reliable 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this guidebook on my recent trip to Arizona. It was accurate and a handy guide to have. It did not, however blaze any trails. What I mean by this is that the author does not uncover many gems, but gives precise information about what is fairly well known. Also, like many guidebooks, does not want to give thumbs down to any tourist attraction. For example, we went out of our way leaving the grand canyon to visit the Cameron Trading Post, which is a quaint sounding name for an overpriced store of Native American handiwork. The author did say that the Trading Post sold some fine and expensive products, but did not say that it is an overpriced tourist trap. Had he wrote this, it would saved us wasted hours.
However I gave the book 5 stars because it did help alot on our trip.

Completely revised guide to the extraordinary Colorado Trail that stretches 468 miles from Denver to Durango • The only guide available for thru-hikers, day hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, XC skiers, and equestrians. • 90 color pictures, 28 segment maps, elevation profiles, integrated GPS waypoints, town maps and Mountain bike detours of Wilderness Areas • 35,000 copies sold The Colorado Trail (CT) is the premier scenic long trail in North America. It winds its way through endless fields of wildflowers to windy mountain passes, from wild mountain rivers and streams to quiet trails through old growth forests. The CT crosses eight mountain ranges, seven National Forests, six Wilderness Areas and five river systems. Starting near Denver at 5500 feet and ending near Durango at 7000 feet, the CT gains and loses almost 76,000 feet in elevation over 468 miles.

This seventh edition of the official CT guide has all the information a thru-hiker needs to plan and complete his or her trek. New to this edition are complete rewrites of the 28-segment trail descriptions and the addition of integrated GPS waypoints.

Each segment has distance, elevation gain, an overview of the segment; a list of trailhead and access points; maps needed; a list of supply points; services and accommodations; detailed trail description; a map, and an elevation gain and loss chart. Additional town maps and mountain bike detour maps (around Wilderness Areas) have been added where applicable.

An extensive introduction includes information on planning, supplying, safety, cycling, regulations, and backcountry ethics—plus chapters on Colorado Trail heritage, natural history, and geology. At the back of the book you will find a graphic summary of the trail, equipment list, ranger districts with contact information, bibliography, and index.

Great descriptions and photos, crude maps 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Laurence Parent is a well-known photographer - his photos illustrating this book are superb (wish there were more) and his descriptions of these drives in New Mexico are great...the maps are crude but serviceable. They are better than the very rough ones in his Hiking New Mexico, though...I've driven almost all the routes described and got my money's worth many times over - the book is well-used and always with me on my New Mexico trips.

Editorial Review:

With 30 carefully selected scenic drives, this book offers myriad ways to explore the Land of Enchantment. Pass through the foothills of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, stop in the ghost town of Madrid, or gaze at the immense caves of Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
