Excellent layout and variety of content. 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Braeking the state up into sections, the author does an excellent job of describing and presenting the various highlights of each. Equal treatment is given to popular and off-the-beaten-path areas, with sufficient detail for each. It made my recent visit more enjoyable!

Hidden Montana 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was a wonderful guide to the areas of Montana we traveled through. There were several things we would not have seen if it hadn't been for the suggestions in the book and some excellent restaurants we wouldn't have stopped at if they had not been recommended by the book. We plan to get another "hidden" book for our next trip.

Editorial Review:

Combining unique travel choices, outdoor adventures, and little-known locales into guides where vacations meet adventures, each title in the Hidden series also offers readers the comfort of detailed maps, Internet information for each listing, author picks, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. Hidden Montana explores Montana's friendly towns, ski villages, and rustic escapes, and then leads into the lost expanses of over 70 parks, reserves, and wilderness areas. The text opens readers to the state's American Indian reservations with helpful advice on how to both enjoy and honor Native American culture. Author John Gottberg lives in Seattle, WA. Includes 13 maps.

Editorial Review:

This is a canyon hiking guide to the Colorado Plateau, which covers the southeastern half of Utah, the northern half of Arizona, the western 1/5 of Colordo, and a small part of NW New Mexico. This new 4th Edition has been undated significantly beyond the 3rd. The author went back to almost all canyons, or at least to the trailheads, to check out the mile post markers, etc. Also, about half a dozen less-interesting canyons or hikes from the 3rd Edition were eliminated; while about a dozen new & more challenging hikes have been added, plus another 32 pages. This 4th edition contains 320 pages and 191 fotographs, about 90 of which are new.

The new canyons are from scattered locations in southern Utah, primarily in Zion National Park, and the Escalante River, San Rafael Swell & Robbers Roost country, along with major updates on slot canyons on the Navajo Nation. Other big changes to this edition are the addition of about a dozen new technical slot canyons; that is, canyons where you need ropes and rappelling gear to get through. This adds another dimension to excitement and challenge, and opens many new hiking areas previously closed to many of us. All these technical canyons are now either bolted-up, or have slings or webbing around boulders, making them ready for rappelling.

The general direction for this book, is toward slot canyons, which everybody likes; but it retains easy & fun hikes to canyons with Anasazi ruins, another favorite. So if you're looking for petroglyphs or pictographs, and cliff dwellings or ruins, which some people try their best to hide, then this is your book. In the back of this book is a section listing the Best Hikes, including for the most part Slot Canyons, then best hikes to see Indian ruins, and Native American rock arts sites. Below is the Table of Contents.

Plain Joy 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Let me add just these two things to the remarks of the many other reviewers: Ian Frazier's rhapsodic discussion of the joy the Great Plains engender (like the mysticism of deserts and the melancholy of moors) is good reading. Sitting Bull, though not an eyewitness, reported that Custer fell laughing in his last battle. Frazier expertly uses this intriguing anecdote to discuss the joy he connects with the Plains.
And that last page of the book! This is some of the best and most evocative prose I've read anywhere. It's worth the price of the book to read that one page. It's nearly hypnotic and I hope soon to memorize the entire ending.

Editorial Review:

National Bestseller

With his unique blend of intrepidity, tongue-in-cheek humor, and wide-eyed wonder, Ian Frazier takes us on a journey of more than 25,000 miles up and down and across the vast and myth-inspiring Great Plains. A travelogue, a work of scholarship, and a western adventure, Great Plains takes us from the site of Sitting Bull’s cabin, to an abandoned house once terrorized by Bonnie and Clyde, to the scene of the murders chronicled in Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. It is an expedition that reveals the heart of the American West.

Great descriptions and photos, crude maps 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Laurence Parent is a well-known photographer - his photos illustrating this book are superb (wish there were more) and his descriptions of these drives in New Mexico are great...the maps are crude but serviceable. They are better than the very rough ones in his Hiking New Mexico, though...I've driven almost all the routes described and got my money's worth many times over - the book is well-used and always with me on my New Mexico trips.

Editorial Review:

With 30 carefully selected scenic drives, this book offers myriad ways to explore the Land of Enchantment. Pass through the foothills of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, stop in the ghost town of Madrid, or gaze at the immense caves of Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

Excellent, But Needs Spiral Binding 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Backcountry Adventures are the best guides of their kind out there. Odometer references, descriptive text, and (especially) GPS coordinates make these easy and foolproof to use. The map and index for the respective areas, Southeast, Central, etc., make planning your route easy as the different routes are color coded with their page numbers referenced. Good sampling of human interest content also, giving some history, flora and fauna, and geology information.

My only criticism is that these guides should be spiral bound, and pages removable. This would allow the book to lie flat and pages and/or sections could be removed to make it more concise for use on a motorcycle or bicycle. These guides are the size of a mid sized phone book and are too big and heavy for anything but automotive use.

Editorial Review:

Backcountry Adventures Utah navigates through 3,721 miles of the spectacular Canyonlands region, to the top of the Uintah Range, across vast salt flats, and along trails unchanged since the riders of the Pony Express sped from station to station and daring young outlaws wreaked havoc on newly established trails lines, railroads, and frontier towns. See ghost towns, old mines, old Pony Express stations, old railroads and stage lines along the 175 off-road trails. Directions include GPS coordinates and all trails are rated for difficulty, mileage, driving time, remoteness and more. Descriptions highlight places to camp, hike, mountain bike, fish, and sightsee, while histories recount the days of the Wild West.

Hidden Arizona: Inclucing Phoenix, Tuscon, Sedona + 2 out of 5 stars.
18 of 22 people found this review helpful.

The only things hidden in this book are the few-and-far-between listings for places that can't already be found in the AAA Tour Book. The layout and verbiage are bit more friendly but all in all, I found this guide book to be long on pat advice, (I.E. "Carry extra water when traveling in the desert") and short on usefull tips and interesting destinations.
Not bad if you aren't a AAA member or can't borrow the Arizona Tour book from one, but definitely far below my expectations.
This will be the first book I've ever returned for credit.

WONDERFUL GUIDE 5 out of 5 stars.

I've used the "Hidden" books for the past number of years while making my way though the southwest. This one is just as great as the others. VERY helpful and accurate. I recommend this book to all seeking adventure in Arizona!!

Editorial Review:

New Hidden Highlight maps point the way to lesser-known gems along the state’s historic old highways. This is the ultimate guide to Arizona's spectacular beauty with detailed information on day hikes in 67 parks and wilderness areas. Includes reviews of a wide range of unique accommodations including golf resorts in Phoenix, dude ranches outside Tucson and B&B Inns in Sedona.
