Lacks passion for the island 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What I think they did well:
-- The suggested itineraries based on the number of days you are on
the island
-- The "Island Voices" sections through out give a nice
local voice to the guide

-- Nice bits of history

What was okay but could have been better:
-- Part of why I was attracted to this book was the Green Travel section
However I wish they devoted more pages to it.
I also wish that they integrated into each of the
districts that they cover

-- The maps at time appear to provide a lot of detail
I wish there were larger maps with less detail and
then insert sections w/ more detail

What I did not like:
-- The index at the end of the book needed to be more complete
Each district has an index but I don't want to have to
look at each section if I am looking to find a particular
restaurant etc.

-- While well written, it is rather dry and lacks personal commentary.
In other guides that I have read it is clear that the authors have
a passion for the island.

Don't waste your time on this travel guide. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have been to San Francisco before but this time is for my Honeymoon, I wanted to make the trip special. I did not like this travel guide. There were no color glossy pictures, only a few hotels were listed for each area of the city. In the past I have bought Fodor's and Michelin travel guides that were much better.

Time Out - the best travel guides!!! :-0 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

While there are heaps of travel book guides on the market, Time Out are better than all others. Lonely Planet are good and DK are good, but this range is a little more in depth and seems to go the extra mile.
After a fun introduction, there are the usual sections you'd expect to find in a guide book; Restaurants and Bars, Hotels, Nightlife, Shopping (my personal favourite) and things Nearby to name a few. I believe their maps are more detailed and layed out really well. There are hours for shops and restaurants and websites too. They include things for people on all kinds of budgets. Another cute idea they have going on is little blue notes on various pages with a point of interest that has been used in a movie or TV show. For example, on page 116 it mentions that the Grand Olympic Auditorium (with its address) was used in Million Dollar Baby. These are just another added bonus that makes this more unique.
I have found these guides useful in the past, and this one is going to come in handy again, because they always update to include new places to stay, eat and shop. These books are so helpful and I think you'll find that too. Check them out, and you may not use other guides again.

Editorial Review:

A sprawling megalopolis boasting more stars than the night sky, Los Angeles is one of America's treasures. This complete guide to the city's must-sees covers everything from sun-soaked beaches and hot springs, to museums and mid-century architecture, to Hollywood and ethnic festivals. All-new chapters focus on cultural background, while 20 new sidebars offer context and history. New full-color photographs, updated maps, rechecked and (if necessary) rewritten entries, and thorough listings make this the ideal traveling companion to the City of Angels.

Experienced WA hiker does not recommend this book.......... 2 out of 5 stars.
27 of 37 people found this review helpful.

...and recommend in its stead : Hiking Washington's Geology, ISBN: 0898865484.

I live in WA state, and have owned "100 Classic Hikes in WA" for 5 years; I repeatedly "try" to reference for new hiking ideas, but every time end up closing the book in disgust. Here is why:
1. The prose is terrible (excessively 'flowery' and overblown);
2. Non-stop negative "preaching" against the forest service, motorized vehicles, horses & dogs on the trail.
3. Hike descriptions, when not oriented on preaching, are not very descriptive of the specific features as seen on the hike.

Because of this, the valuable information, such as difficulty of hike, accesibility of trailhead, & attraction of hike (view, flowers, etc) is very hard to extract from the hike descriptions.

I consider myself an experienced outdoors-person, and hit the trails almost every weekend during good weather. Sometimes I hike with friends, sometimes I take my dog, sometimes I bring the trailer & ride with my horse, and sometimes I take a mountain bike. My point is: these men found innumerable ways to slam almost every activity I do in the mountains: according to their never-ending negativity, the only good trail is one in which only a walking human is allowed.

My recommendation to the authors is to spend less time 'educating' the public with your incredibly biased opinions and more time on the purpose of the book: educating people on the best places to go in WA for a great hike.

"Hiking WA's Geology" is a much better book, even if you are not interested in geology for the following reasons:
1. Hike descriptions are written by authors experienced in technical writing, i.e. you recieve the most amount of pertinent information in as few words as possible.
2. Many of the trails are 'off the regularly beaten path'
3. Descriptions give detailed information along each section of the hike, so the hiker knows not only the 'what & why' of what he is seeing, but also any technical challenges that might arise (paraphrased e.g.: 3 miles down the trail, the trail becomes difficult to follow, watch for campsite #22, walk to the left, find the trailhead again).

Editorial Review:

Based on their more than 100 years of combined experience in Washington's backcountry, Spring and Manning have selected their favorite trails for this compendium of classic hikes. Full-color photographs throughout supplement the authors' first-hand descriptions of the trails they have hiked many times over. Featuring spectacular views, flower-filled alpine meadows, lakes and streams, ancient forests, animals and birds, and solitude, these trails will give hikers a taste of Washington's best. Infused with a strong conservation message, this guide not only introduces hikers to Washington's gems but encourages them to become active participants in an effort to preserve and, in some cases, reclaim the remaining wilderness.

Editorial Review:

Wine Grapes have been cultivated in California’s verdant valleys since the days of the Spanish missions in the eighteenth century. Since the 1970s, the California wine country has been among the world’s premier wine-growing regions, and California wines hold their own against the best of Europe and elsewhere. Beyond the well-known vintners of the Sonoma and Napa valleys, the Golden State is home to quality wine producers from Mendocino to Santa Barbara. The temperate climate and lush landscapes that make this state an ideal locale for wine production also offer spectacular scenery for leisurely drives and backroads adventures. A tour through the wine country is a tour through the history of California, a journey back to the Old West, a wilderness adventure, an encounter with American literary icons, and much more. The mystique and history of California’s wine regions are captured in full glory in Backroads of the California Wine Country. From the misty northern appellations of Mendocino County to the hot, dry flatlands of Paso Robles, in the wilds of the Santa Cruz Mountains and along the placid Russian River, writer Karen Misuraca and photographer Gary Crabbe lead you on an informative and colorful tour of the most spectacular landscapes of California, offering myriad excursions for wine-lovers and weekend adventurers alike.
