Excellent little book 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This small book (only 172 pages) is perfect for planning your next Sonoma/Napa visit. In fact, although I have been many times to Napa, I wanted a new place to stay with a fireplace and jacuzzi bath and privacy. I found a great place in the book called Cottage Grove Inn - with 2 Frommers stars.

Because it is so portable, not all the wineries are listed, so if what you need is a listing of all wineries this may not be your book. However, if you need to find the best in hotels and dining experiences as well as some of the best wineries to discover for yourself, then this little jewel is perfect.

Must have! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is my second gazetteer I wore the first one out. If you ever want to get lost or not get lost you need this map. This is a very detailed map and works great for planning outings to anywhere. The only thing I don't like is the contour lines, they need to be a little easier to read, for me at least. Still you can't beat this for the price!

BEWARE obsolete editions of DeLorme items! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you're going to purchase a DeLorme item, buy the latest edition you can find. DeLorme creates new editions when they receive too many complaints about inaccuracies. Therefore, an out-of-date edition may be utterly worthless for your purposes. The most common corrections apply to settled areas, but many rural and wilderness areas have significant changes, too.

Great Guide To Seattle And Its Environs 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

BEST PLACES SEATTLE is a great guide to Seattle and its surrounding area. It describes where the best outdoor activities, dining, nightlife, shopping, museums, lodging, and other attractions are, as well as discussing many great day trips to national parks within a couple of hours' drive from Seattle. Seattle (and King County, Washington, in general) has a great deal to offer to any traveler, so pick up this book wherever you may find it.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling guide, substantially updated for this edition, contains all the information locals or visitors need to maximize their experience of Seattle. Candid, trustworthy advice on where to dine (with 4-star rating system), stay, and play is included, along with 300+ shopping reviews and profiles of three-day getaways. A simple icon system highlights bargain, family-friendly, romantic, and uniquely Seattle spots, while witty sidebars devoted to everything from taco trucks to spas to the gay scene reflect the quirkiness of America's own Emerald City.

Editorial Review:

During the thirty-five years wine critic and writer Paul Gregutt has lived in the state of Washington, its wine industry has ballooned from a mere half dozen wineries to nearly five hundred. Washington Wines and Wineries offers a comprehensive, critical, and accessible account of the nation's second largest wine-producing region. Gregutt, who has covered Washington wine in books, newspapers, and magazines since the mid-1980s, enthusiastically dispenses information along with his editorial opinion, displaying the depth of his knowledge of the area, the players, the regions, and the wines. He points out the best vineyards, the most accomplished winemakers, the must-have wines, and the newcomers to watch. He rates wineries--not wines--with a unique and detailed 100-point scale, providing an insider's view of the best that Washington state has to offer. As the global wine industry reinvents itself for twenty-first-century palates, Washington is poised to become as important and influential as California on the world stage. Washington Wines and Wineries is the definitive reference book on the subject.

Still the best... 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Even though TW has "retired" and they've changed the name (made obligatory by the elimination of the even 100 hikes in previous editions) this information packed volume is still the best all around (with the companion Sierra North) hiking guide covering the Sierra Nevada in print today. This edition is organized a little differently and the spiffy fold out map is missing from the back cover but the same reliable and up to date information is available for both arm chair hiking and trip planning.

A great many of the same routes are included as were in the previous volumes and it appears they have been updated with current (and depressing) requlatory requirements and accurate descriptions of the state of repair or disrepair of primitive camp sites and historic markers. Additional trips are included that appear to be more "moderate". Again up to date trail and camp site information along with hazards and fishing data are included.

The only caveat I would add is to take the somewhat nostalgic pining for the "good old days" with a grain of salt. While it's true water quality degradation has made mandatory the use of filters or other types of purification and black bears (and too many friggin' hikers) have forced more and more regulations and quotas on a land that once was wide open for exploration; there's still more "wild" here than in just about any other locale in the country. And that's the same stuff that's drawn legions of backpackers, mountaineers and naturalists ever since John Muir "discovered" it over a hundred years ago. It's still there waiting for you...

Editorial Review:

This completely revised and updated 8th edition of Sierra South now covers an expanded region of the Sierra, from the southern boundary of Yosemite National Park to southern Golden Trout Wilderness. With new trips and old favorites, Sierra South is the classic guide to backpacking in Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, Ansel Adams Wilderness, and Mt. Whitney.
  • This classic guidebook has been a trusted source for travelers to the Sierra backcountry for nearly 40 years, inspiring thousands to explore the "Range of Light" again and again.
  • Contains 84 trips, ranging from 2 days to 2 weeks, organized from west to the east side of the Sierra and around major highway sections for easier use and reference
  • Includes information on permits, day-by-day trail descriptions, GPS and elevation data, where to find water, and--an invaluable new feature--trailhead maps showing routes for every trip

A must read before hiking Half Dome 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My brother and I had a perfect experience on our first hike to the top of Half Dome due largely to the advice and information in this book. It allowed us to psychologically and physically prepare as best as possible. Much thanks to Rick Deutsch for sharing his vast knowledge and experience.

Editorial Review:

Of all the hiking adventures in Yosemite National Park, probably the single most compelling to visitors from all over the world is the hike to the summit of Half Dome, the 8842-foot granite rock that stands as the Park's signature landmark. For many, it's a much anticipated once-in-a-lifetime achievement. The most popular route to Half Dome's summit is a grueling 16-mile round-trip trek with 10,800 feet in elevation gain and loss. Although the hike is non-technical, with hikers climbing fixed cables up the granite side of the rock, many would-be hikers are hesitant about this potentially risky trip. How fit should you be? What preparations do you need beforehand? What should you bring? How should you pace yourself during the day? From pre-trip advice to on-the-trail tips, this guide is aimed at both casual and experienced hikers. An estimated 50,000 people attempt the Half-Dome hike each year--up to 800 per day during peak season.
