Editorial Review:

Running from Mount Whitney to Yosemite Valley in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the 212-mile John Muir Trail passes through some of the most dramatic mountain terrain in the United States. Each year thousands of backpackers traverse some or all of the trail, relying on Wilderness Press's John Muir Trail. The new edition of this Sierra classic has been completely updated and revamped, and includes significant information found nowhere else. The new John Muir Trail meticulously describes the entire trail and is written for today's hikers, many of whom rely on GPS units. The book includes GPS coordinates for every junction, but also for every established campsite, bear box, and mountain pass that the trail crosses. The guide has separate descriptions for northbound and southbound hikers; for each direction a junction chart shows elevations, distance from previous point and total mileage. Incorporates Tom Harrison's 13 section maps of the trail that JMT hikers have relied on for years.

Helps you see the whole state 4 out of 5 stars.

Most people can say they know San Francisco/Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County, or San Diego. These are the places people typically hit up when they plan a trip to CA. Having lived several years in SoCal, I found this book opened my eyes to all the state has to offer. It balances the sections on the large cities with other destinations and activities. You can easily stay with friends in LA or SFO and get a better tour of the town than the book can offer, but what about Death Valley or the Redwoods or PCH? This is where the book has been of great help to me.

Editorial Review:

Tempt vertigo on the hills of San Francisco and rub elbows with a star in an LA boutique. Sample syrahs in the Wine Country, cruise cliff-hugging Hwy 1 or hike in the heat of Death Valley. Whether you're a city slicker, road tripper or adrenaline junky, grab this in-depth, cheeky guide and let our local authors steer you to the treasures of the Golden State.

Recommended 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the one with the most adventure outings and the one that is the most accurate. We went to Oahu with another couple and this guide provided all the fun.

All the ACTION 5 out of 5 stars.

It was a tremendous advantage having this Trailblazer guide along. The large walking maps of Waikiki and Honolulu were extremely helpful. Not having to drive made this a relaxing vacation since bus and trolly transportation stops were everywhere. Long beach strolls, great little restaurants, surf lessons, free entertainment and shopping were right at our fingertips. They directed us to San Souci Beach and Kapiolani Park where we grabbed a little alone time. They include the island's history, something most guides don't bother to do. There were so many great excursion listings all around the island, we were sorry we didn't have more vacation days.

Highly Recommended A++++ 5 out of 5 stars.

We took two guidebooks to Oahu, this one and No Worries Hawaii planning guide. They made a good pair. The one in color (NW) clued us in how to plan our itinerary and decide which island we really wanted to visit first. Hotel decisions were made so much easier. My husband was inspired by the surfing, so Oahu won out.

The Oahu Trailblazer was very detailed and motivated us to explore a chunk day by day. They cover all the beaches and trails in a well thought out format. There are driving maps in each section which make it easy to skip through the pages and still know exactly where you are on the island. There are hundreds of photos so you can picture where you're going.

Surfing was as good as it gets. Put their walking tour of Honolulu on your agenda. The architecture and history and restaurants and museums were very interesting and we're glad we spent one whole day cruising around downtown and following it up with the Pearl Harbor tour.

Somewhat informative; busy layout not conducive to quick reference 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for a 4-day trip and needed an easy to use guide book, but it was a bit outdated (restaurants listings were not correct) and sight-seeing tips were boring and/or half-heartedly written.

I liked the Eyewitness book for Tokyo, which had a light overview with useful pictures and maps. It complemented a Frommers book well, which had lots of useful information, but required more reading to get a good idea of a neighborhood. I think this book would also benefit from another, more well-informed book, as this one lacked the in-depth details on a particular sight.

The layout was also very busy and distracting. A better layout, perhaps with selective use of color, would have been easier to navigate.

Editorial Review:

Set on steep, wooded hills and almost surrounded by a vast bay, this jewel of a city is, above all, photogenic. Equip yourself with a camera, a map, good walking shoes, and set off to discover its historic sights, cultural treasures, and vibrant neighborhoods. For more detailed information about famous sites, maps, a huge selection of hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues look to Eyewitness Travel San Francisco and Northern California.

great background info on CA sites 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book and also the current Frommers CA guide. I appreciated this book, because as we drove around the cities- the book gave detailed information about the different points of interest including their history and origins. It was great for all of those times we wondered what the heck something was- or how it came to be - while driving around CA cities. I also found this book more helpful in pointing us to some cool shops in the cities. While the Frommers guide was more detailed in its restaraunt and hotel descriptions, this book was more helpful in finding some of the off the beaten path - fun to see sites.

Taking this back to the library 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I could barely read any of this book. The type is so tiny and hard to read, and the maps are all grey and difficult to read as well. Everything is just scrunched in there and you have to pore over that map to figure out what the heck you're looking at. They're way too busy. They cram too much detail into one map.

Its information is segmented well, and it's good that they list operating hours and prices where they can, but I just can't squint at that little type. The lettering on some of these maps is literally as small as the head of a pin. I'm supposed to be able to whip this out of my backpack on the island and use it as a quick reference tool? This book is going back to the library; I'll just have to find another book to use.

Editorial Review:

This book evolved from the popular download version which has guided thousands of Maui visitors in navigating America's most expensive place to eat out.

It is unprecedented because of its scope and by virtue of the fact that it is written by restaurant critics. James and Molly Jacobson are two big-city-exiles who live on Maui and dine out an average of 11 times per week. Their honest, take-no-prisoners review guide is written with the philosophy that people who love to eat and prefer not to waste money on bad food should know the truth about Maui's well-marketed dining scene.

Top Maui Restaurants is packed with local insights and insider tips. Reading this book before and during your trip is like having a best friend in paradise who steers you away from the tourist traps and guides you to the real gems. The online version is updated every month with the most accurate, up-to-date reviews and information, and readers of this book can get the latest download free at TopMauiTips.com.

The best general guide to the state I have found, great illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I am a frequent Alaska tourist and have used several of the Eyewitness city guides in the past, so I was glad to see that they came out with this book. No one can touch Eyewitness for design and illustrations and their Alaska guide is no exception. Their maps are amazingly clean and functional. It is impossible to pick up this book and not get sucked into it.

The guide is not as comprehensive as a Frommer's or Fodor's, but for me, who needs a listing of every restaurant and gift shop in an area. Eyewitness focuses on the can't-miss attractions and gives more than enough shopping and dining options to cover your stay in state. The information is in bite-sized chunks that are easily scanned and give a good overview to the areas you're visiting.

If I had to say something against this guide it would be that it is so filled with photos that they need to be pretty small. When I flip through it and see these tiny images of areas I have visited, they just don't do justice to the scope of the landscape. But then, maybe this will just help you appreciate Alaska when you are there in person.

If you or someone you know is going to Alaska for a vacation, get them a copy of this book. This is the best guide to the entire state I have found.

Tame and Terrifying Tales 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for stories about fishing, hunting, trapping, wilderness travel and "white knuckle" adventure. What I found was a book that covered a wide variety of topics, all relevant to Alaska but in some cases a little "tame" or mundane for the typical adventure reader.

So, as is always the case, whether or not you'd like this book depends on your particular interests. I give it a high rating because it has something for everybody. In fact, the book contains almost 60 stories and if you find only 10 that you really enjoy the book is worth buying. I also rated it high because while every story is not a "gripping" adventure thriller, many of them are, and others are informative, entertaining or interesting in other ways.

Among the more "riveting" stories are two about men surrounded or pursued by wolves; one about researchers on a frozen lake during an earthquake; one about a fisherman caught under a capsized fishing boat and one about a daring float plane rescue of men stranded in a deep canyon river. There is the obligatory "avalanche" story and another about a raging walrus, and several "big fish" stories.

One or two stories deal with the psychological effects of prolonged isolated, wilderness living. Another, and one of my personal favorites, is a unique and revealing story about crime and punishment in the bush. It is entitled "Of Traps and Treasures--Klutuk."

Another story, "My Sunset Moose" deals with the realization that time changes everything, and that for better or worse, change must be accepted. Another, "A Trapper Leaves the Country" deals with the same subject, in the same somber way, but in a different context.

But my single favorite story is "A Few Mosquito Bites." I believe that any man or woman or any child old enough to understand simple language would enjoy this story about a man, his hybrid wolf-dogs and life in the wilderness. In fact, it would be worth buying this book just to get this story.

But please don't think that every story is about men going hunting or fishing, or getting killed or maimed in the woods! Many are written by women about the extraordinarily tough and determined women who were attracted to life in the the world's last great wilderness and last free country!

Lots of stories, lots of fun, easy reading. Recommended.
