Editorial Review:

This book evolved from the popular download version which has guided thousands of Maui visitors in navigating America's most expensive place to eat out.

It is unprecedented because of its scope and by virtue of the fact that it is written by restaurant critics. James and Molly Jacobson are two big-city-exiles who live on Maui and dine out an average of 11 times per week. Their honest, take-no-prisoners review guide is written with the philosophy that people who love to eat and prefer not to waste money on bad food should know the truth about Maui's well-marketed dining scene.

Top Maui Restaurants is packed with local insights and insider tips. Reading this book before and during your trip is like having a best friend in paradise who steers you away from the tourist traps and guides you to the real gems. The online version is updated every month with the most accurate, up-to-date reviews and information, and readers of this book can get the latest download free at TopMauiTips.com.

Truth in Advertising: A New Edition of California's Hiking Bible. 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Every two years or so, hikers in California are blessed with a new edition of Ann Marie Brown and Tom Stienstra's California Hiking, by far the most complete hiking guide to the state. Keeping track of all the trails and updating when necessary is no simple task. Indeed, one of the authors proudly advertises hiking, camping, and otherwise exploring the out of doors almost half the year in an effort to keep this book up to date and to "avoid .. getting a real job." The 2008 edition is the largest in several years and includes over 40 new hikes.

What has stayed the same. California Hiking still divides the state into sixteen geographical regions and lists hikes in each area. Maps of each region are provided with directions to the trail heads, and regions are organized from North (Redwood Empire) to South (San Diego County and Southern Deserts). An introduction explains how to use the guide and lists favorite hikes of the authors in multiple categories, from best wildflowers and waterfalls, to best "difficult" hikes (the authors use a slightly different aphorism) ie., hikes you might not want to take your spouse on. Each hike includes a brief description, along with directions to the trailhead. Individual trail maps cannot be included in a guide as comprehensive as this one, but the authors provide information on where to obtain available maps, along with important details like entrance fees, permits, and local government agencies.

What is new. More trails! From one end of the state to the other, the authors have added new hikes: some twenty in the San Franciso area alone. I am personally looking forward to walking the recently opened Mill Creek trail, found just south of Monterey and Carmel. Old growth redwoods are one of my passions, and any new trails of this sort are welcome. Among the new hikes in Southern California, Gray's Peak and Black Mountain Lookout both offer spectacular overlooks. Also new is Runyon Canyon in Hollywood Hills and several new trails in the Sacramento area. A few trails have been dropped from this edition. The Cedars Creek Interpretive trail, for example, has fallen into disrepair and is no longer listed in California Hiking. But for the most part, the changes are in favor of more, not less, and this edition is worth purchasing for the new hikes alone.

Other changes include updating mileages and difficulty ratings. Those of us who are absolutely exhausted after climbing to the top of Yosemite Falls will be relieved to find that this trail is now rated a "4" on the difficulty scale (which runs from 1 to 5). The authors have also made extensive mileage updates to reflect new trail alignments. Deep Creek Hot Springs is now listed as 4 miles from a new trail head, and the Ewoldson trail, probably the single most beautiful hike in the Monterey area, is now listed at 5.3 miles to include a spur trail to a stunning overlook.

Over the years I have met a number of hikers who use this book as their hiking bible for the state. More than a few of them (myself included) dream of walking every trail listed. That would require a Herculean effort, of course, but it says a lot that the authors of this book have done so multiple times and given the rest of us what is surely the most comprehensive state hiking guide currently available in the United States. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Editorial Review:

Best-selling outdoors authors Tom Stienstra and Ann Marie Brown know the best hiking trails in the Golden State, from breathtaking coastal walks north of Los Angeles to challenging backcountry treks in the Sierra Nevada. Drawing from the knowledge and experience of both authors, Moon California Hiking leads beginner and expert hikers alike to the best trails the state has to offer. The eighth edition of this classic guidebook includes 21 new hikes and unique lists of “Bests” like Best Hikes to Waterfalls and Best Hikes to See Wildlife. Complete with helpful icons which rate the difficulty and quality of each hike, detailed regional maps, and hiking tips, Moon California Hiking provides hikers with first-rate expert advice and all the necessary tools to head outdoors.

Recommended 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the one with the most adventure outings and the one that is the most accurate. We went to Oahu with another couple and this guide provided all the fun.

Highly Recommended A++++ 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

We took two guidebooks to Oahu, this one and No Worries Hawaii planning guide. They made a good pair. The one in color (NW) clued us in how to plan our itinerary and decide which island we really wanted to visit first. Hotel decisions were made so much easier. My husband was inspired by the surfing, so Oahu won out.

The Oahu Trailblazer was very detailed and motivated us to explore a chunk day by day. They cover all the beaches and trails in a well thought out format. There are driving maps in each section which make it easy to skip through the pages and still know exactly where you are on the island. There are hundreds of photos so you can picture where you're going.

Surfing was as good as it gets. Put their walking tour of Honolulu on your agenda. The architecture and history and restaurants and museums were very interesting and we're glad we spent one whole day cruising around downtown and following it up with the Pearl Harbor tour.

A Storybook Travel Through Washington State 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Bruce Hansen has written a great travel guide for the motorcycle enthusiast. It doesn't have as much about the roads as it does the places to see and visit. My wife and I have read it cover to cover and Bruce's writing style is easy to read and entertaining. I recommend it for anyone looking to find some out of the way places to visit in our fine state.

If you're looking for the best and most challenging roads for motorcycles in Washington, look no further than "Destination Highways Washington: A Motorcycle Enthusiast's Guide to the Best 346 Roads in Washington State". This is a very comprehensive collection of the curviest, most scenic, and best engineered roads, and has the best road specific details available.

Between these two books, you can't go wrong. Both are well worth reading.

Editorial Review:

This latest addition to the popular Whitehorse Motorcycle Journeys Series, features more than 30 trips following the best motorcycling roads in Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Idaho, and British Columbia, from the sweeping roads below Mt. St. Helens, to the jagged coastlines of northern California and Oregon to the desert hills of Idaho. Written by a motorcyclist, it includes full-color topographic maps and detailed directions formatted for easy reading from tank-bag map windows. Trips are designed for various riding styles, from two-up travelers sightseeing to sport riders looking to ride the curves. For the ambitious motorcyclists headed for Alaska, it includes the best motorcycle trips through British Colombia.

If You Died There, She'd Write About You 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Though I enjoyed reading about Haines and parts of this author's life, the preoccupation with death throughout this book was overwhelming. Death of relatives, strangers, friends, animals. Accidental death. Death by falling, by weather, by cancer, by boats sinking, by airplanes crashing. Fear of death. Near death. Funerals. Researching and writing obituaries. Anniversaries of loved ones dying. Even when it seems a chapter is going to be about a different subject, within a few pages it seems like death always sneaks in there.

I'd like to see another book by this author, this time devoted to life and living, instead of death and dying.

Editorial Review:

Tiny Haines, Alaska, ninety miles north of Juneau, is accessible mainly by water or air—and only when the weather is good. There’s no traffic light and no mail delivery; people can vanish without a trace; and funerals are community affairs. As both obituary writer and social columnist for the local newspaper, Heather Lende knows better than anyone the goings-on in this breathtakingly beautiful place. Her offbeat chronicle brings us inside her busy life: we meet her husband, Chip, who owns the local hardware store; their five children; and a colorful assortment of friends and offbeat neighbors, including aging hippies, salty fishermen, native Tlingit Indians, Mormon spelunkers . . . as well as the moose, eagles, sea lions, and bears with whom they share this wild and perilous land.

great background info on CA sites 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book and also the current Frommers CA guide. I appreciated this book, because as we drove around the cities- the book gave detailed information about the different points of interest including their history and origins. It was great for all of those times we wondered what the heck something was- or how it came to be - while driving around CA cities. I also found this book more helpful in pointing us to some cool shops in the cities. While the Frommers guide was more detailed in its restaraunt and hotel descriptions, this book was more helpful in finding some of the off the beaten path - fun to see sites.

Yet Another Great Book About The Pacific Northwest 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

LONELY PLANET WASHINGTON, OREGON, AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST is yet another great book covering the highly bountiful Pacific Northwestern region of the United States, as well as British Columbia in Canada. Although it lacks extensive coverage of media options for each major city in the region, that's more than compensated for by in-depth descriptions of sightseeing, dining, and outdoor activities, as well as discussion of local vernaculars. This is a book that no one who enjoys traveling should be without.

I need a magnifying glass to read the contents inside! 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Why is Lonely Planet making the text so terribly small when us boomers can no longer see this tiny print without strong glasses with books like this one? They should be helping us since we are the ones who travel most.

Please reader,s let's get them to increase the size instead of decreasing,

Excellent Companion 4 out of 5 stars.

This and Fodor's Pacific Northwest served well as our guides to the Oregon & Washington coasts for three weeks. As longtime AAA (autoclub) members we still carry and occasionally refer to their guidebooks; but, prefer Lonely Planet & Fodor's.
