Editorial Review:

With wit, wisdom, and an extraordinary talent for turning dry, difficult reading into colorful and realistic accounts, the creator of the bestselling Don't Know Much About®, series now brings the world of the Old and New testaments to life as no one else can in the bestseller Don't Know Much About® The Bible. Relying on new research and improved translations, Davis uncovers some amazing questions and contradictions about what the Bible really says. Jericho's walls may have tumbled down because the city lies on a fault line. Moses never parted the Red Sea. There was a Jesus, but he wasn't born on Christmas and he probably wasn't an only child.

Davis brings readers up-to-date on findings gleaned from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Gnostic Gospels that prompt serious scholars to ask such serious questions as: Who wrote the Bible? Did Jesus say everything we were taught he did? Did he say more? By examining the Bible historically, Davis entertains and amazes, provides a much better understanding of the subject, and offers much more fun learning about it.

Editorial Review:

Heralded as the most authoritative and up-to-date atlas of the Bible now available, Biblica: The Bible Atlas with an enclosed CD-ROM goes beyond the more traditional books of its kind. It places the biblical narrative and its peoples in their historical, cultural, social, and geographic contexts, and it makes clear the complex history and cultures of the Bible lands as they relate to the region’s modern social and political landscape. But perhaps most important of all, Biblica: The Bible Atlas incorporates the most recent archaeological findings and research, combining scholarly data with engaging discussion of the Bible’s immortal stories. In summary, this unusual volume offers readers fresher insights and a deeper appreciation of the biblical narrative than any other reference source of its kind. Biblica: The Bible Atlas is also a visually stunning guide to the Bible and biblical lands, featuring more than 650 full-color paintings, drawings, etchings, and photographs plus 125 full-color maps of the region. Following the extensive and beautifully illustrated main text are 14 pages of biblical reference tables, an extensive bibliography, a glossary of biblical terms, a large selection of biblical quotations from the Old and New Testaments, a gazetteer of biblical place names, and an extensive index. Here is a beautiful and informative book that will make a treasured addition to the family bookshelf. It will also be a much-sought-after volume in reference libraries everywhere.

A complete guide to the expansive geography of Biblical history 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 28 people found this review helpful.

"Holman Bible Atlas" is an immensely readable book supplying first of all geographical, then rising from it historical, political, social, economic and, most of all, theological foundations to the context of the Bible. Whether a layperson seeking this grounding or a more serious theological student, the reader will find that context here.

This atlas was required reading in a Survey of the Old Testament course I took several years ago. Because an atlas is a book of maps, this book, of course, focuses on ancient topography, agriculture, migrations, and a changing history. All things together combine to tell "the story of God's redemptive work in human history" (2).

The story begins with a land layout of the general area of the Ancient Near East, then the lens closes in on the geographic regions of Palestine, then life in the region, including weather, climate, crops, and what archeology has provided.

Then the writer, Thomas Brisco, pulls his lens way back to focus on the earliest people of this geography, then refocuses closer to the time of the Patriarchs, and specifically Abraham and his descendants through Joseph and his passage into Egypt. An examination of Egypt: geography and the dynastic history as they pertain to God's work that follows.

This pattern, adhering to atlas and map disclosures, predominates through the Exodus, Resettlement, the Kingdoms and kings and judges, rise of powers and loss of powers--all geographically revealed.

How does one use a Bible atlas? You can read it straight through as I did and thoroughly enjoyed. Or you can use the Table of Contents or Index for locating specific topics you are interesting in pursuing. Let's say you are studying the walls of Jericho. The TC gives me pp. 77-78 for information on Joshua and the suspected location of Jericho. I find a picture of Tell es-Sultan, possibly the ruins of Jericho. I don't find the story itself because this is an historical atlas, not a history book.

On page 40 is a map locating the settlement of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Levitical cities. On page 100 is a map showing the possible flight of David from Saul, who was intent on killing David, his God-appointed successor. On page 118 is a map of the two kingdoms: Israel and Judah.
(A side note: According to some sources my name Judy derives from Judah.)

Often colorful, the maps are clear and easy to follow. The photographs enhance the written description. Sidebars provide interesting anecdotes. The flowing and well-written narration is situated amongst a variety of visuals. "Holman Bible Atlas" is an inviting, informative trek through the rocky hills and green valleys into the paths of the past of the Bible Lands. Your ticket is in the book.

Wish I'd had this before! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I just got this book and, wow, I wish I'd had it in college when I was taking Old and New Testament History classes. I don't know why all textbooks and bibles don't contain these clear overlays that let you see both the geography of biblical and modern days at the same time.
I also love the "fascinating facts" pages that help you think about biblical events in light of the world events of the time such as "the first Olympic games were held during Jonah's time" and "The Great Wall of China was built and the Mayan Calendar was invented about 200 years before the birth of Jesus."
This book is definitely worth the money.

    Editorial Review:

Excellent Companion to Bible for Both Child and Adult! 5 out of 5 stars.
49 of 49 people found this review helpful.

This is definitely a worthy purchase if you have a child and as well if you (admit it) still get mixed up a bit with Middle East geography, especially when it comes to what an area was called years ago and what its present-day name is. When you read a passage to your child, show him with this each time where that scripture was taking place at that time period (the atlas shows name changes and political boundaries in different time segments). You both will have a much better understanding of what was taking place where and when.

The Student Bible Atlas 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

I have been looking for just this kind of atlas for my 5th and 6th grade Sunday School class. The main thing I like about it is that it uses the same map of Israel and shows it at the various periods. Most atlases and Sunday School curricula show various maps instead of one map that changes over time. I liked the comparison maps of the empires. The comments and illustrations with each map are also useful.

    Editorial Review:

Where did Moses cross the Red Sea? Why were so many battles fought across Palestine? And where did Paul's ship founder on the voyage to Rome. All of these questions are answered in the Atlas, an indispensable help to the serious Bible student.

A Good Maps & Charts Book - I'm Still Looking 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a series of charts that would combine people and historical dates. For example, in Daniel, how do the various prophets line up with the various rulers? When do Daniel's dreams take place chronologically?

This book didn't come close. This book has outlines of each of the books. I can get that in almost any commentary. This book gave cursory discriptions and discussion about each Bible book. But, the authors did not provide enough detail to make the reading worthwhile. That level of detail made reading a waste of time.

This book is supposed to be a "Complete Book of Bible Charts and Maps!" It's NOT. Even the drawings of things like to ark of the covenant are small, roughly drawn and basically unuseable.

I was VERY disappointed with this book.

    Editorial Review:

Nelson's Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts is completely updated and packed full of visual aids that offer a deeper understanding of the Bible. By using the large, reproducible maps, charts, tables, and surveys, you can visualize the events, places, and people in the Old and New Testaments. Whether you teach a Sunday school class, lead a Bible study, or just want to get to know the Bible better, this resource is a great addition to your study library.

Stunning... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book as a reward for extra effort in my Sunday school class, and I was really amazed at how good a book it is. For a paperback, this book has a narrow page width, or I suppose you could say the pages have a greater length than typical. The pages are also are not ment to be bent back at the binding, but they have an area a short distance from the binding where the pages are designed to 'bend.' This design for a paperback is new to me, although perhaps some of you are familiar with this. The overall design of the book lends itself well to tables, charts and maps. Most tables fit well in this design, and charts may be reproduced by using adjoining pages to make a larger image. Most maps of Israel are necesarily longer and narrower than other maps you see, so this format works well there as well. The whole thing seemed really modern to me, kind of like wide-screen, but the bottom line is the practicality of it. Now, considering it has most all of the hardcover complete Holman Bible Atlas, then you have quite a handy refernce at a reasonable price with enhanced designed functionality. Don't hesitate on this one. It's a real winner

    Editorial Review:

This new edition of the Oxford Bible Atlas, with 27 maps and 81 full-color illustrations, has been thoroughly revised to bring it up to date with regard both to biblical scholarship and to archaeology and topography. The Atlas will help readers of the Bible understand the contexts in which its stories are set and to appreciate the world from which it emerged and which formed its background. Maps show the geographical setting of the Bible's stories and reflect the successive stages of the Bible's accounts, while specially chosen full-color illustrations bring the countries and their peoples to life. The accompanying text describes the land of Palestine, and its wider ancient Near Eastern and east Mediterranean settings. It outlines clearly the successive historical periods, and describes the major civilizations with which Israelites, Jews, and early Christians came into contact. There is also an illustrated survey of the relevance of archaeology for the study of the Bible. The Atlas provides a superb guide to the geography of the Holy Land throughout biblical history, from the Exodus period through to New Testament times.
Comprehensively revised to take account of modern scholarship
    27 maps and 81 full-color illustrations
A superb guide to the geography, history, and archaeology of Bible lands

This is my choice for a Bible atlas. The text and maps are clear and accurate. The map citation index and Scripture index are complete. The time line and color photos help to make this an interesting atlas. For Bible teachers, a complete set of matching overhead transparencies is available. My Bible college students have voted this their #1 choice.

I'm a graduate student and bought the book for a class at the seminary that I attend. Even as a graduate student, the books' geography is way too detailed for a quick survey of the land. But, if you are looking for a very detailed, informative Atlas, then this is the book to buy.
