Bigotry 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 43 people found this review helpful.

This book has lots of good advice for those navigating the college years. However, this book is homophobic, and therefore, I must give it a poor rating. Preaching hate is not what I want to find in a Christian book. The book offers bad advice on how to treat homosexuals, and has no advice for homosexuals reading the book.

Editorial Review:

Living as a new graduate really does mean living on the edge—the edge of your future, the edge of the rest of your life. It means living with exciting possibilities . . . and also endless questions:

  • What will I do in life
  • Will I succeed in my chosen career
  • Will I find a lifelong love
  • Will I be rich . . . or famous . . . or successful

Making sound decisions about your future isn’t always easy, says Dr. Dobson, but it doesn’t have to be that complicated. The thing to remember is that choosing who you will be—your values and commitments—is even more important that choosing what you will do. This book is an invitation to pay some serious attention to the “be” question . . . and then step forward into a fabulous future.

Simple, easy to read for kids. Application to Biblical values is pretty good. Great pictures. May need more input from parent (to child) after reading through devotions, question time, etc...

Great Family Devotions for Children 5 out of 5 stars.

Great book for children 3 years and older. I bought this for my 2.5 year old daughter and she didn't pay too much attention. Now that she is three she really enjoys going through this after dinner each night. Great colors and great stories.

We like it! 5 out of 5 stars.

This little devotional is great for families with very young children. The animals keep their attention and I like that they are learning animal facts as well as how God has designed us all for a unique purpose with special skills and talents. My kids are 2 and 4 and they really like it - although it's more like a 2 minute devotion for the 2 year old!!

Editorial Review:

This delightful devotional is perfect for bedtime, dinnertime, or anytime. Each short devotion includes a story about an animal illustrating its dominant trait as created by God. That trait is then related to a child. Questions at the end are fun for the young child to answer, such as picking out something in the picture, asking what the animal is doing, and asking what God wants us to do. Each devotional concludes with a short bible verse.

Editorial Review:

Despair. Emotional isolation. Self-loathing. Immaturity. Abusive actions. These are just some of the damaging fragments that remain embedded within our personalities, behaviors, and souls when we are broken as children. The memory of the past may seem distant and clouded, but within its scars deep wounds remain that continue to inflict pain upon our adult lives--and often end up spilling into the lives of others. In Broken Children, Grown-Up Pain, Paul Hegstrom, author of Angry Men and the Women Who Love Them , shows us the scars from his broken childhood and shares practical and proven methods for facing and dealing with the pain of the past. By using scientific research, psychological studies, and biblical principles--especially those found in the Jewish model of raising children--he points us to the place of healing where we are finally free to pursue authentic relationships and build healthy emotional intimacy with others. This updated version of Broken Children, Grown-Up Pain is an excellent resource for pastors, teachers, counselors, psychologists, parents, or anyone wounded by an abusive past.

Great Baptism Gift 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was given to my daughter at her baptism and we read it each day. We are on our second year of reading the book. The blessings are only 3/4 page in length which is long enough to hold her interest and the illustrations are very well done. It is also teaching her the months and counting. Great gift idea and in fact I purchased the preschool version to give to her on her first day of school this September.

Editorial Review:

Blessings Every Day introduces young children ages 2-5 to the Bible and its wonderful promises. The simple devotions feature a Bible verse for every day of the year along with text written in a light, upbeat style that connects with a young child's experiences. Each devotion is highlighted by a short poem or prayer, and every page is colorfully enhanced with an adorable illustration by the Care Bears artist.

Bringing Them Home 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Most of us know a family that is struggling with a prodigal child - seeking to draw their hearts back to Jesus. Watching these families and their grief over the children they love - the children they raised to seek Jesus - awoke a concern for my own wee ones in my heart. Though our children are still small: 5, 2, and one on the way - it is my heart's desire for them all to come to know and love the Lord. As Christian parents this is the deepest desire of all of our hearts for our children. But what happens when they turn their back on Him and His ways despite our best efforts? What do we do when they become prodigals?

In Bringing Home the Prodigals author Rob Parsons addresses the heart of the issue of prodigal children. It may not be what you think the heart of this issue is either. Instead of focusing on the "why's", Parsons goes past the wondering "What did I do wrong? What could I have done differently?", there are other titles available that focus on keeping our children's hearts - Parsons is here to encourage. He focuses on what we can now do - as parents of these prodigals - to gently guide them home to us, and more importantly, to God.

Engagingly written, this short book of 119 pages can be read in a day, but it will bear re-reading at a slower, more devotional pace to reap the riches to be found here. Though I am not the parent of a prodigal, Parsons ponderings on how we deal with prodigals as individuals, and as a church led me to examine my own spiritual life and dealings with others. I thank Parsons for drawing us back to the heart of God for the lost as demonstrated in the parable of the prodigal son.

As much as I enjoyed reading this title, I would have enjoyed seeing some more scripture directly in the text - for a non-fiction Christian title there seemed to be relatively little scripture presented. The main scripture that the book is based on, the parable of the prodigal son is not once included in the text of the book, which did seem a bit odd. Scripture is presented from the NIV, The Message and The Amplified Bible. KJV readers will want their bibles handy.

Parsons writing voice is warm and encouraging; his years of walking with and teaching the relations of prodigals shine through in this book through the prayers, reflections and testimonies presented. I am thankful to have this book available to lend to the families I know who are dealing with this issue, to let them know that there is hope if we lay our prodigals at the feet of Jesus. Bringing Home the Prodigals encourages us to love, to pray, to stay open, to always be watching and to always keep a light on.

Editorial Review:

There is no pain like parental pain and the love of a parent for a child is like no other. Our children can disappoint us, hurt us, even abuse us but somehow we cannot stop loving them. And yet as much as we love them we cannot live their lives for them. Our children make choices. And sometimes those choices are bad ones. And yet so often we feel the guilt ourselves. But is it possible that we have made prodigals of some of our children who never turned their backs on God at all - just on some pseudo caricature of the Church and discipleship? This incredible book is a call for parents to be released from guilt, the church to repent of the part it has played, and a call to prayer that the prodigals will come home.
