Useless and Confusing 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

like my title says...useless and confusing. I borrowed this book from my local library before actually buying any books and I hated it. It was confusing. I got the 4th edition of "What to Expect" and loved it! Try it instead!

Old fashioned, medicalized and discouraging... 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I was tempted by this books most obvious feature, that is, its week by week format. And indeed it gives valuable information on baby's growth, location of uterus at different stages of pregnancy and so on. However, it is generally the worst breed of old fashioned, highly medicalized and well... chauvinist pregnancy guides I thought no one published anymore.

Instead of being reassuring and promoting a woman's trust in her pregnancy wisdom it pictures her body as being in an emergency condition, constantly on the verge of crisis and failure. It will give you unbelievable number of situations when, as a reaction to some innocent symptoms, instead of lying down to rest and to listen to your body's needs you should... yes, call your doctor to make sure! I am sure that any pregnancy where tips from this book are followed is awfully distressing and ob / gyns do hardly anything else than answer phonecalls from allarmed patients.

The book gives very scarce information on natural remedies and approaches to pregnancy and it critisises home birth totally, without honestly discussing its benefits, challenges and when it may be advisable! It calles it dangerous! At the same time it dismisses any doubts about safety of ultrasound (on the ground that nothing suspicious was proved so far). It is clearly designed for women who want medicine to rule their pregnancies and births. And yet it puts "asking your mother about how you are carrying your baby" as a highly ranked method of determinng the sex - I just could not believe I was reading it!

I regret having bought it, primarilly because of my husband, who already started liking it for all the things he can learn about the development of the baby. And while I am immune to this book's scary stories, he may well get an idea that pregnancy is a hazardous adventure, which would be a real pity.

Editorial Review:

This bestselling guide to pregnancy has been improved for a new generation of babies and mothers. Includes a new section, "Before you become pregnant, " to help readers increase the odds of having a healthy baby. It is a unique book divided into each week of pregnancy with important information about the developing baby and the changing mother-to-be. 40 illus.

Easy read with tons of great tips 5 out of 5 stars.

With a toddler and a newborn it's hard to find time to read anything. This book was such an easy read. The cartoons are a great help because it's simple. I borrowed this from the library but owning one is a must so that I can refer back to it whenever I need to.

It Works! 5 out of 5 stars.

Sibling Rivalry is an area that we as parents must address early on. This book is very helpful, but I think the best book that deals with helping all kids get along with each other is Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying. Through scripts, activities, routines parents learn to teach children how wonderful it is to respect and get along with each other. This is a must-read for any parent with 2 kids or children about to start school... so empowering for children. It goes so far beyond bullying.

Awesome Reading! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book not only helped me with my relationship with my kids...it helped me understand some of the issues between my siblings & me & my parents while growing up. Must read if you have children!

Just What We Needed! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have two daughters who used to get along quite well. But since the summer, their acceptable level of sibling rivalry has escalated to a very uncomfortable level. We were desperate to "nip it in the bud" before things really got out of hand. This book is already doing the trick - and it only arrived in the post yesterday! I practically devoured the book as soon as I took it out of the package!

My husband gave me the task of reading up on things, because I'm a very fast and focused reader, and we needed the help a.s.a.p! I finished the book today, and have started reading it again to take notes and make summaries to keep on hand. I have already put some of the lessons into practice and notice the difference already. For example, arguments are easily diffused because feelings are validated. I've also stopped "positive comparison", after I read, with horror, the potential harm it can do.

This book may be a bit of a shock for parents who are used to saying, "because I said so!" or who use physical punishment. However, for us, it is another step forward in the journey of being the liberal parents we consider ourselves to be.

Excellent Book - My only reference for every question I have 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a must have book. I purchase it for every new Mom I know. Dr Ari Brown has provided me with so much great information. I won't let anyone borrow this book because I use it so often! I just buy them their own.

Great but some false info 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

For the most part I LOVE THIS BOOK. But it is inaccurate in the description of the babywise book. "On Becoming Babywise" is the other book I am using and have read it from cover to cover and Baby 411 describes it inaccurately. Just beware with this book and the "reviews" it gives of the other books and methods.

Fantastic, down-to-earth resource 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

By far, my favorite pre-firstborn book, and I have read a lot of them! I would recommend this to anyone who would like solid, medical advice, in plain language, without feeling like they are being preached at. The author is obviously passionate about several subjects-- I would expect no less from any pediatrician-- but I do appreciate that "Dr. B's Opinions" are clearly called out as such.

Several reviews "warn" readers that Dr. Brown serves as a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics. It seems like that would be a positive, but what do I know. In this reviewer's opinion, Baby 411 gives balanced advice backed by up-to-date, relevant, scientific research. I suppose, however, I should offer a disclaimer about this book:

I realize science has given us all sorts of crazy theories, like "evolution" and "global warming." If you doubt the veracity of those zany notions, you may not appreciate this book. Specifically, if you believe that an individual who received a bachelor's degree, then attended four years of medical school, then spent three years in a residency program focused entirely on children's medical care, then passed board exams and earned the right to put F.A.A.P. after the M.D. behind her name is somehow unqualified to offer medical advice about your child, then you will not enjoy this book.

If, however, you value the advice of a professional who can speak in plain language without belittling you, this is the baby book for you.

Do also check out Baby411.com; it's an excellent supplement to the book.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Spock meets Judge Judy--finally a parenting book that separates fact from fiction. What if you could bottle the wisdom of all those parents who've come before you...and combine them with the sold medical advice from an award-winning pediatrician? Baby 411 is the answer.

- Why do you have so many children?

- How do you provide for your family financially?

- How do you handle mealtimes? Transportation? Laundry? Birthdays?

It continues with tales of their big, busy family, whose televised documentaries and frequent appearances in news shows and newspapers have created an international following.

The MOST COMPREHENSIVE Breastfeeding Resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the only book you need to breastfeed your baby. Eleven months later I still open this book often to find information on ALL topics. Particularly helpful is the quite comprehensive drug appendix.

Buy This Book if You Plan to Breastfeed 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Someone gave me this book 3 weeks into breastfeeding for the first time and I wished I had it before the baby was born! Breastfeeding is such a personal, complex and at times challenging process. This book is a great resource that walks you through many questions you will have about breastfeeding. The more information the better and this book is a great start.

Pros- A great "all in one" resource
Cons- Book does not contain everything on breastfeeding

Editorial Review:

Breastfeeding may be natural, but it is not always instinctive. The 20th Anniversary Edition of this classic guide to breastfeeding, beloved by a generation of women, has been completely revised and updated to provide even more practical, reassuring advice and support for today's expectant and nursing mothers. Easy-reference survival guides help identify and resolve problems at each stage. An appendix on drug safety is a unique feature among breastfeeding books.

WOW! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Initially I thought I was reading a really erotic book. Christians may find this book offensive because of all the things the author speaks about and ways of improving your marriage via sex. I am here that this book isn't so much about sex (although I can tell you that this book has a lot of sex and how it can be used to not only improve your sex life, but improve you marriage, especially if your marriage has entered a stage of boredom, stagnation, or on the verge of divorce), but on how the 'other' spouse thinks. Men: do yourself a favor-- GET THIS BOOK! You will understand your wife so much and she will love you for it. Women: GET THIS BOOK! Now you will understand why men do what they do and why they seem aloof to you. This is one phenomenal book that I have begun to re-read it a second time, only this time, I have my notebook handy and taking notes. The BEST part is that he uses Biblical passages on why God is the author of sex and why if done His way, you can't possibly go wrong. There is one spot I am a little iffy on, and that has to do with oral sex but this is a subject left to each and every Christian couple to decide if this is for them or not. I strongly suggest this book, if not only to learn how to understand your spouse but to break that taboo way of thinking that sex is a dirty word. It isn't. God intended Christians to have fun during sex. Dr. Leman will show you will Biblically and in a way you never thought. EXCELLENT!

Editorial Review:

For married couples and those engaged to be married, Sheet Music is a practical guide to sex according to God's plan. In his characteristic style, Kevin Leman addresses a wide spectrum of people, from those with no sexual experiences to those with past sexual problems or even abuse. Using frank descriptions and black-and-white line drawings, this book has a warm and friendly tone that will help couples overcome awkwardness in discussing an issue important to all married couples.

The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family by Dave Pelzer is a sequel to the heartbreaking memoir, A Child Called "It". Pelzer explains what happened after he was taken away by his abusive mother and neglectful father. This book is really uplifting and moving. I highly recommend this fascinating story and his quest to find a foster family who will love him unconditionally. Enjoy!

The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's search for the love of a family 5 out of 5 stars.

This book among others written by Dave have left me riveted. I can't put them down. All I see is a man who has overcome the circumstances placed before him. He is such an inspiration, I only wish more people would read his books and make something out of their lives, instead of playing the victim (which is much easier to do)

Editorial Review:

"The Lost Boy" is the harrowing but ultimately uplifting true story of a boy's journey through the foster-care system in search of a family to love. This is Dave Pelzer's long-awaited sequel to "A Child Called "It". The Lost Boy" is Pelzer's story--a moving sequel and inspirational read for all.
