I enjoyed Race To Dakar very much. 5 out of 5 stars.

Race to Dakar

I first found Charley Boorman through his trip Long Way Round. I read that book and devoured the DVD TV series. And found out Charley was going to try the Dakar rally.

I ended up reading Race To Dakar in one day. It was so engaging I could not put it down. I liked everything about it. Its shown me places I'm sure I'll never see.

Then I bought the Race To Dakar DVD through Amazon.Ca. And it was just as amazing as the book.

Editorial Review:

In January 2006, 230 people raced in trucks, cars, and motorbikes from Lisbon to Dakar in the 28th annual Dakar rally, the most challenging race in existence. After his celebrated trip round the world with Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman was keen for another challenge, and racing in the Dakar had always been his dream. Supported by Australian champion biker Simon Pavey and experienced British biker Matt Hall, Charley attempted what many professional bikers have failed to do: successfully compete in the Dakar rally. His account details his extraordinary adventures as well as those of his fellow bikers, and also explores the history of this most dramatic and romantic of races. From Portugal through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, and Senegal, it also provides a unique look at the countries hosting the rally.

Definitely another good V. Rossi book which contains so much images within his life and two wheels.

Editorial Review:

Fabulous full-color photographs capture the larger-than-life character of arguably the greatest motorcycle racer of all time and one of the world’s most charismatic sporting personalities, both on and off the track. Rossi’s life is charted from his earliest days, following his graduation through the ranks, winning the 125, 250 and 500 World Championships, to his domination of the 200mph MotoGP class, first with Honda and then in 2004 and 2005 with the previously under performing Yamaha squad. This is a visual treat for all who appreciate Rossi’s talent and take on life in this age of conformist motor sport.

A very good book 4 out of 5 stars.

I think Twist of the Wrist 2 is a superior book, but the Soft Science is also a decent read. The concepts are fairly intuitive, but there are many good artifacts of infomation. I recommend only purchasing this book AFTER Twist of the Wrist 2. The concepts aren't cummulative, but Twist of the Wrist 2 is simply a better textbook - in my opinion.

It helped me a lot 5 out of 5 stars.

Read the book, watched the movie then even took a school. I was a club racer and I rode track very often, after reading the book, I cut over 16 second off of my lap times and the best part is, I did it without crashing. I never had to close my eyes before entering a turn because I was in over my head. The best way I can put it is this, before I read Keith's book, everything or all the thoughts about riding and what to do or how to get faster or what I was doing, was wible wable in my head, I heard somethings here others there, contradicting thing in other places......Keith organized every bit of my thought and built up from the ground up, now i'm running ahead of the pack and I'm not sweating it because usually it would feel like i'm going to crash. Now every corner I take I feel confident that I will make it out alright and will even know exactly what I did to be so.

Outstanding!! The authoratative book on Gran Prix Racing 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've read these books for years. Each and every year I get the whole picture of what has happened on the World Gran Prix Motorcycle scene. The pictures are beyond words, and give a clear shot of what it's like to ride one of these bikes at speed. The technical information is very good, considering that all the major manufacturers take secrecy to the extreme making it hard for outsiders whom are interested in the technical aspects kind of shut outs. Overall, though....I can't wait to get my hands on the next edition.

Before you buy, Be Aware! 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is not what you think! Great photo's, great stories, but come on, not a SINGLE photo or info on the original and FAR better known US based Hells Angels. The entire book cover to cover is ONLY UK BASED ANGELS!. No disrespect to them and if you are from the UK, the book is great. But to those in the US who want to see pictures of the legends and hear about the dozens of stories of the original Angels, this book is a major letdown. NOTHING on the cover of the book nor in the book description mention the fact the book is 100% UK based Hells Angels. That, in my opinion was done on purpose because they know the book will not sell anywhere near as well. I assure you, when the vast majority of people WORLDWIDE hear the name "Hells Angels", they are thinking of the original California and the Legendary New York City chapters and the dozens of stories that go with them, NOT London, Wolverhampton, etc (Again, no disrespect). Great photo's, great text, but overall dissapointed.

Editorial Review:

Simply brilliant 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Many enthusiasts, and many highly respected MotoGP riders, consider the 240-HP, four-stroke 990s that raced from 2002 to 2006 to have been the pinnacle of performance and spectacle in racing--the most powerful and demanding race machines ever created, even beyond the 180-HP 500-cc two-strokes that made such extraordinary demands on their pilots.

This book sets out to make the point, and the result is a compendium of terrific photos of the era, year by year, captured by 16 great race photographers from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK, professionals whose unique access to the men, machines, pits and tracks gives them the chance to create stunning imagery of the sport. Every reader will find favorites, and there are no bad shots. Nicky Hayden puts his own 2006 world championship into perspective in a thoughtful and insightful introduction.

No aspect of MotoGP is ignored, from the great tracks to the fans, the key men (no women, except for fans and umbrella girls--one of them naked under her wet tee shirt) who drive the sport, the portraits of many of the interesting characters, the agony of crashing and the conflicting emotions of riders who win or lose. Spectators may only see spectacle, but insiders know that top racers put their lives on the line every time they ride, even in practice, and you can see it on the page.

What is particularly striking is that Julian Ryder chose unique points of view and images unlikely to see print in any magazine or newspaper. These unusual views of the sport make the book essential for the enthusiast, a remarkable and memorable record of courage and commitment, daring and danger, the essence of great spectacle unmatched in sport.

Behind the 250-odd images reproduced with stunningly clarity on the page, one aspect of the work deserves consideration by readers: photographers shoot thousands of photos at every MotoGP event, and the ratio between great and `okay, interesting' and `no good' is one in hundreds, often demanding capture in a right-time/right-place thousandth of a second. Ryder has captured the spectacular, violent and fascinating aspects of the sport and its participants.

The book title is ironic. `In camera' is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as `in secret or private session, not in public,' but what could be more aggressively public that MotoGP? Yes, and we are the beneficiaries, at the track and in this magnificent book. Get it!

Editorial Review:

MotoGP is the top class of motorcycle racing, the two-wheeled equivalent of Formula 1. It arrived in 2002 to replace the old 500cc GP class, and the big Japanese and Italian factories all fielded 990cc four-strokes. The bikes developed so rapidly that engine capacity was reduced to 800cc after just five years.

This book records those five seasons through the lenses of the sport's finest photographers. It is a year-by-year record of the racing as well as a collection of truly amazing photos arranged to illustrate all aspects of the sport. Julian Ryder, British Eurosport's MotoGP commentator and the author of the annual "MotoGP Season Review," has selected the images and written the accompanying commentary.

Editorial Review:

A searching and at times harrowing re-appraisal of the life of Evel Knievel, the seventies American icon and the greatest daredevil motorcyclist that ever lived. Now fully updated in paperback with the story of the last few years of his life and his death in 2007. Stuart Barker's definitive biography captures the super-star status that Knievel held and also examines the marketing phenomenon of a man who once boasted he 'made $60 million and blew $63 million'. Born in the town of Butte, Montana in 1938, Robert Craig Knievel was an outstanding athlete, ski jumper and ice hockey player at school. His early jobs included working in the copper mines and driving a bus as well as a stint in the US Army, but he always subsidised his income through crime ('I could crack a safe with one hand tied behind my back quicker than you could eat a hamburger with two.') He used bikes to escape from the police and eventually hit upon the idea of jumping them after seeing a stunt driver jump cars at a state fair. His first jump took place over two mountain lions and a box of rattlesnakes, and he soon developed his act into the 'Evel Knievel Motorcycle Daredevils' before embarking on a solo career.Knievel suffered 37 breaks and fractures during his daredevil career. In 1967 he spent 29 days in a coma after an attempt to jump over the fountains outside Caesar's Palace casino in Las Vegas. While recovering, he decided to make his goal to jump the Grand Canyon, an attempt he was forced to abort by the US Government; and later was paid $1 million for jumping over 13 double-decker buses at Wembley Stadium. Now, a quarter of a century after he last stepped off a motorcycle, he has been reborn as the originator of Xtreme sports. This, alongside his love of gambling, women and drinking, ensure his legend will live forever. Life of Evel is the story of a truly extreme personality.

Light on Content 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Let me begin by saying that I was slightly disappointed by this purchase. I had hoped for an in-depth discussion of riding technique, providing useful insight on bike control and operation.

What I got, however, was page after page of misty eyed reminiscences about the "good old days" of motorcycle racing. While interesting, this is not what I was hoping for in a book about riding skills.

Actual technique sections were rather light on detail, and provided no more information than even the most basic of motorcycle instruction courses. Essentially the book could be summed up by just writing in big letters "DO EVERYTHING SMOOTHLY", and leaving it at that.

On the other hand, this book might be useful for people who have just begun riding a bike, and have not undergone any instruction.

Editorial Review:

Former AMA racing champion Reg Pridmore, known worldwide for his popular CLASS Motorcycle Schools, brings his decades of experience on the track, street and classroom, to the readers of this new riding skills book. After reviewing the basics, Pridmore shows advance students how to focus on control in cornering, braking, and acceleration. A long-time proponent of the value of body-steering, Pridmore's insightful text explains how this controversial technique helped him win championships and how it can help everyday riders and budding racers become smoother, better riders. Sections on street strategies and riding gear make this a comprehensive how-to riding skills book for anyone looking to improve their skills.
