Japanese Racing motorcycles 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For motorcycle lovers this is the best book in years to explain how and why Japanese motorcycles influenced and changed our world. The modern four cylinder motorcycle engine started with Honda's 250 cc four cylinder racer from the early 60's (looks the same as todays engines). If you like small, complex, hi-tech engines (a 50cc twin, DOHC, 4 valve per cylinder racer that Honda multiplied into a 5 cylinder 125cc racer and again into six cylinder double overhead cam racer) this book is for you. It details it all with amazing photos and history of ALL of the Japanese brands all the way up to the current MOTO GP racers. Two stoke lovers will not be disappointed. It covers with amazing detail a technological era of racing and competition that shows clearly why racing improves a brand. My only complaint is that the book is not hardbound.

If you are a race fan 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed the book. However, I did find that the impressive coverage of Norton's illustrious racing history came at the expense of the technical and corporate history. Some may not find this a fault, but I was looking for more information on production models. And there simply wasn't enough mention of the twins with which us Yanks are most familiar (I can't afford a Manx but a Commando is a possibility...) If you are a fan of the singles that made Norton a great name in motorsports, you will like this book. It is well written and informative.

Norton motorcycle history 4 out of 5 stars.

This provides a good history of Norton motorcycles and their racing history with a fantastic collection of photographs.

Editorial Review:

An historical record of the oldest surviving motorcycle marque in the world, including the racers and the production bikes. The book contains interviews with the founder's daughter and early employees of the marque.

Editorial Review:

Some records are made to be broken. Others stand for a lifetime. And sometimes the achievement of a lifetime is surpassed in days.

In the world of motorsports, the one record that has proven the toughest to break is the motorcycle land speed record. Don Vesco rode a streamlined motorcycle to a record-breaking speed of 318 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1974. It was sixteen years before Dave Campos flew past that record at a speed of 322 miles per hour. And that record had stood for another sixteen years when, on Labor Day Weekend, 2006, a motorcycle daredevil and aspiring writer named Rocky Robinson rode a Suzuki-powered streamliner at an incredible 344 mph.

How he got there--and how he faced his greatest challenge at his moment of triumph--is the story Robinson tells in Flat Out. Here is Robinson's epic decade-long quest to be the fastest motorcycle rider on earth, recounted in all its gritty detail--a compulsively readable account that captures the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication that go into being the world's best, as well as the sheer terror of riding these two-wheeled rockets nearly six miles per minute.

Disappointing drivel 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was really hoping for a better read. Even in the hands of a better
writer this story would fall flat - It is predictable and hum drum. If you need something to help you fall asleep quickly, buy a used copy. Very disappointing.

WOW! 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow this book was phenomenal! I really liked the way that the author titled the chapters. It was very clever! I strongly disagree with the other two reviews (Miracle kid and Miracle Mom). This book was very well done. I really like Brooke; she always knew what to do and I find that very admirable. She is a very responsible person and I want to be like her. I loved this book and recomended it to all of my friends, family and teachers. This is definatley a five star book! Because of the language it's probably better for middle schoolers and above. The ending was my favorite part of the book, it was a real jaw dropper!

Editorial Review:

Fearing that he'll end up like his father, Austin Davis believes he only has one option after high school - winning a seat on KTM's Motocross team and becomming a Factory Rider. But, standing in his way of the high-priced sport is oppressive poverty, his violent father's dirtbike past, and a free-style peer with a grudge. Set on the Motocross tracks of the Pacific Northwest, the Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals track, and the brand new state-of-the-art KTM training facility in California, Austin, Brooke, Jack and Amanda experience both the painful and rewarding consequences of making tough choices.

Good pictures, easy to read & informative! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 11 people found this review helpful.

In 1971 in England I was lucky to take over ownership of one of the last pre-unit BSAs (my brother's 1961 Superocket - much the equivalent to the Bonnie of its day but with only one carb - easier to keep in tune). Shame the unit BSAs (A50 & A65) were never so good

I then went 'japanese'(not that there was anything wrong with that), though am now lucky to own a BMW (my dream bike - I got left some $$$).

I did own a (used) Bonnie - around 1977, I think - but it was unfortunately one of the least revered types - the oil in the frame (below the seat) models. Still, at least I was able to work on the engine (I bought it with a loused up engine), unlike modern machines.

I collect books on BMWs, though I have some books on other makes. I found this book to be excellent & on par with many of the best BMW books - great pictures & as far as I know an accurate history. It certainly is easy to read.

My only fault with it is maybe the price - maybe a bit steep for a relatively slim volume - though I'm very happy/fortunate to have snagged an almost as new one via Amazon for only $6 + $3.49 shipping - a great deal!

I would love to own a(nother) Bonnie - this time one of the classic models. It would be light enough for my wife to ride (why did bikes get heavier despite the use of modern materials?) and a joy to throw around curves (no, not scraping the footrests - I'm too old to risk breaking a leg after almost 40 years riding with no broken bones!) It would however have to be in a restored state so I guess, not being able to afford it, that will never happen.

Ah well, maybe one day someone will give me the $$$ to go & buy either a new one (which look great in the dealer's showrooms) or a restored old one. In the meantime, this book will more than do.

Editorial Review:

The spearhead of a highly successful export drive, a winning production racer and the top 'street fighter' of its day, the Triumph Bonneville retains a special place in the hearts of motorcyclists worldwide. Motorcycle expert Steve Wilson offers personal recollections from those who have tuned, raced and restored Bonnevilles; details of the Bonnie's racing successes; buying and tuning tips; and technical specifications to deliver this detailed study of the machine and the men who helped make it a motorcycle icon.

Great Information and Good Presentation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is not the perfect book about MotoGP or Superbike, but it is rather close. The facts and information are very good in this book...the presentation is also well-done and the photographs are wonderful. I only wish that there were more statistical information about races past. (I bought the "MotoGP Results" annual for that purpose.) However, I would definitely recommend this to the veteran race fan who needs to get his or her race information fix in a rather large coffee table book! If you like photos, this is a good book for you!

Editorial Review:

Now in its 31st year, Motocourse continues to go from strength to strength as the fortunes of MotoGP worldwide continue to flourish. Compiled by leading motorcycle journalist Mike Scott, Motocourse is not simply a lavish document on the MotoGP and Superbike seasons, it is a highly collectible resource that has sold out for each of the past three years. It is widely recognized as the leading annual in this exciting sport. Motocourse is packed with detailed race reports, in-depth analysis, rider profiles and outstanding photography that brings to life the excitement of this massively popular sport.

A must have for a Kawasaki owner 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Lots of great photos of your favorite motorcyle mark. Has alot of excellent information on the history of Kawasaki motorcycles.

Editorial Review:

Although it is Japans smallest motorcycle manufacturer, Kawasaki has had a huge impact on the motorcycling world. Here is the full story of this famous marque, including road and competition bikes.

Ian Falloon delivers the background history of the Kawasaki company; chronicles the early racing days; Kawasakis two-stroke production bikes; the Green Meanies - the HR version of the 500cc four-stroke; the highly successful Superbike and Endurance racers of the 1970s; and the bikes of the 1990s which ushered in a new era of performance up through the ZX-12R introduced for 2000.

Sturgis by Michael Lichter is a wild beautiful ride! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have yet to visit South Dakota and the Sturgis rally, yet I can console myself with Michael Lichter's wild and beautiful photography. Dave Nichols, the Editor of Easyrider, writes a snappy intro that expresses how close to the edge Lichter goes to capture a powerful image and the photos reflect that wild dangerous edge as do some of the people pictured...and of course these are my favorite photos! The "just married" image which is a posterior shot of both the bike and the couple is juxtaposed with sheer perfection -- the young woman's stunning body and the gritty image of the beer cans attached to the bike. You can almost hear the rumble of the bike and the beer cans banging against pavement in celebration of their biker union and this is just one of many standouts. The bikes and the people are more unusual than what you see on the Discovery Channel. Bottom line...If you can't get to Sturgis, South Dakota, this book rocks and if you have been there, you still want this book because it documents 20 years of a very wild ride, gritty, wonderful crazy people, and beautiful American countryside.

Editorial Review:

Sturgis, South Dakota, is a culture unto itself, a motorcycling mecca for hundreds of thousands of bikers who make the trek to town each August. Sturgis is a place unlike any other, a place that becomes the center of the universe for motorcycle enthusiasts for one week every summer. Sturgis features nearly a quarter of a century's worth of artistic photography by noted photographer Michael Lichter. Lichter's camera has captured the annual motorcycle rally and the culture it inspires since the 1970s. The magnificent aura, has inspired expression, and personality of this multi-faceted event can best be seen through the eyes of someone who has been there through the years, and this book paints the perfect picture of everything that has been and still is the famous Sturgis Rally.

Excellent collection of articles... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you are over fifty and love classic motorcycles, don't give this book a miss. The drawings by Nick Ward, although comical, are in a class of their own. The attention to detail comes only from exceptionally talented artists.

The writer has researched this subject so thoroughly, one gets a first hand straight and direct insight into the just how these machines came to be.

If you are lucky enough to own a classic, you will know it even better having read this book.

Excellent articles on the Ace Cafe in London and the history of Plumstead's AMC (Matchless, AJS, Norton...) factory and it's demise.

Editorial Review:

Steve Wilson's long-running "Down the Road Apiece" column in Classic Bike Guide is a favorite among enthusiasts. This witty and delightful volume presents two dozen of Wilson's very best articles, highlighted by Nick Ward's meticulously detailed drawings. Read about the author's own journeys to Portugal, to the Shetlands, and from Sweden to Holland, plus the inside story of the boom, decline, and fall of the British motorcycle industry. A nostalgic treat for enthusiasts of classic motorcycling.
