Editorial Review:

Shortly after the Boy Scouts organized an American version of the successful English program, local organizations called councils began to operate. Composed of progressive community leaders, they offered a framework for Scouting to offer its program to boys. Along the way, councils acquired property-through lease, donation, purchase or a combination of all three-for camping and other outdoor activities. Wings: The Story of Camp Westmoreland recounts the tale of the oldest continuously operational Boy Scout Camp in Alabama. Larry Faulkner, himself a former camper on the property, bases his story primarily on the memory of Scouts and their leaders who used the facility. Scouting began in the area in 1912. By the 1930s, Camp Westmoreland flourished as a popular summer facility. With the acquisition of Camp Jackson, near Scottsboro, Westmoreland went through a period of decline starting in 1979. In the 1990s, dedicated volunteers-including many former campers-worked to restore the property to usefulness. Faulkner's book recounts timeless stories of camp life at Westmoreland through an entertaining and enlightening view of Scouting in northwest Alabama demonstrating the positive impact the Boy Scouts provide in this area. The Bones of Poetry 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Most boys don't like poetry unless it's Shel Silverstein or Jack Prelutsky so Ghighna has a tough task to get into the kid's backpacks, but this little book might just do the trick. Kids might also want to try their hand at writing their OWN poems based on the titles of these poems, as well as enjoying the poems themselves. For older boys, tougher boys, after this book is devoured, I'd also get them reading Jimmy Santiago Baca or Jason Yurcic's collections as a start on poetry-as-language-of-the-heart without the pink froth and lace.

Not worth purchasing 2 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book as a I began preparing a unit on poetry. I noticed that most of my books had very little that would interest any of my male students. The selections in this book are too cliche. It seems as though the author thought boys don't like poetry so lets compile a bunch of very short, simple poems that pertain to male topics like sports, little sisters, and not liking homework and then they'll read it. The poetry has little to no thought in it. At least they could be humourous, but they're not even that. I Never Said I Wasn't Difficult by Sara Holbrook or various other titles by Sara Holbrook would be much better choices.
*Mr. Charles Ghigna and the Random House Company have been very accomodating to me and I appreciate their excellent customer service. The very graciously returned the book.

INSPIRING, BEAUTIFUL AND PROFOUND 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

While this book is like a letter from a loving elder to young Black men, it is not just for young people. The author has an extensive knowledge of various ancient warrior cultures in different countries in Africa, which comes through in the introduction, the principles, and the quotations. There are wonderful, brief stories that illustrate the principles - taken from discussions between griots and young warriors, kings and their subjects, elders, fathers and sons. The black and white photographs of young warriors are beautiful, and the poetry beside each picture creates an almost spiritual communication - it is written as though they are speaking to you, and you feel it! The 41 virtues represent values that are the true foundation of civilization - respect, integrity, honor, loyalty.
When you buy this book, be prepared to end up with a worn copy - people will want to borrow it, read and re-read it.
There is a portion of poetry next to a photograph of a handsome young man, a warrior, standing on the plain. He asks - "Do you remember the open plain....Where men were warriors and warriors men...Do you my friend remember?" The Shaasha Barta will take us back to a time of dignity, heroism, self-respect and loyalty. This book helps us to remember.

Editorial Review:

Young Black males from their teens to their thirties have a difficult time in American society. Without a nurturing and protective culture or code of behavior they are lost. Black males don't seek conflict, they seek security. But nothing prevents them from being locked in an unending, inhumane struggle for survival. Shaasha Barta gives back a key that was lost during slavery: a code of honor and conduct that existed in the time of the great African empires; the key necessary for the restoration of dignity, honor and stability.

Editorial Review:

What's this book all about? One word—boys.

This is the one and only fill-in-the-blank, make-lists book that's aimed solely at boys. All the pertinent subjects are covered: name, age, rank, friends, favorite sports, favorite movies, best places to hang out, and even the grossest things you ever found in your pocket. Any boy can capture the essence of who he is in this book. And with any luck, he'll come across his dog-eared copy in years to come and be able to have an embarrassing laugh with his kids.

For boys to do, for boys to share—this is a book that's custom-made for sharing and comparing. It is a cleverly disguised journal that will provide boys with the opportunity to record all the many facets of themselves and their lives through a series of lists. It's fun. It's funny. And it's easy. A book that will single-handedly crush any boy's resistance to writing and keeping a journal, it taps into the male's inclination to make lists, and its tongue-in-cheek humor and riotous cartoon illustrations are sure to keep boys of all ages laughing.

Not as good as it seems 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 4 and 2 year old sons to fill out for father's day. I must say the concept of the book is great but...the pages are laminated in such a way that crayons don't color and child safe markers smear. Also, my children and I found many of the illustrations creepy and disturbing. I was ask several times "Mom what are they doing in that picture?"
You could make a nicer book yourself from scratch.

Fabulous for adults too! 5 out of 5 stars.

My adult sister, brothers, and I completed this book for my father for his birthday. We added family pictures and notes he had written to us through the years. A wonderful way to show your father how much he means to you.
