Tender? Deep? Try Tolerance Run Amok 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 24 people found this review helpful.

{First of all, I rate this a 1-Star book. I mistakenly submitted my review with five stars and you can only edit the review - not the rating.}

(...) YOU HEAR ME: POEMS AND WRITINGS BY TEENAGE BOYS is a collection of teenage angst that will shock most any parent who reads this book. That may come as a surprise to those on the left who promote the acceptance of trash as "tolerance"... but "shocked" is probably being kind as many parents would be flat-out angry at finding their 7th-12th grader in possession of this book.

Let me be honest: This book cannot even be reviewed with the frankness I would like, in using words from the book itself, because Amazon would, rightfully, strike it for being obscene! The editorial reviews above give you a taste.

Teenage boys, for YEARS, have grown up learning right from wrong, but to those who praise this book I suppose that's an oppressive and old-fashioned concept. Books like this - and praise for them - say that it's okay (and right) to use vulgarity, promote pre-marital sex - and more - all in the name of "acceptance of young boys angst." Sorry, but some of us still believe you stand up for what is right and true and good and call trash what it deserves to be called - and what this book is - TRASH that belongs nowhere near a junior high library.

Editorial Review:

Teenage boys speak out—without the filter of adult sensibility—in a compelling collection of poetry and prose.

In a powerful collection of more than seventy uncensored poems and essays, more than fifty teenage boys from across the country explore their many-layered concerns: identity, love, envy, gratitude, sex, anger, competition, fear, hope. Here, unadorned and without the filter of adult sensibility, is the raw stuff of their lives, in their own words. Isn’t it time to listen?

Better without the bible verses 2 out of 5 stars.
33 of 44 people found this review helpful.

This is actually a wonderful book for older sibs. However, I purchased it without realizing its religious bent. As I am not a Christian, it was not suitable for our household. I wish the author would publish a similar book, minus the bible verses.

Great Gift for the Big Sib! 5 out of 5 stars.

This interactive, colorful book kept our proud new big brother engaged for several hours over several sittings. He loves the fact that he has his "own book" about his special accomplishments, and loves working on it as I work on his baby brother's book. Highly recommend!

Editorial Review:

This book is now available in softcover format and includes a die-cut cover for a picture of the big brother and the new baby as well as a downloadable "I'm the Big Brother" iron-on T-shirt transfer.

I'm the Big Brother is an interactive book that will help an older sibling feel that they have an important role in welcoming a new baby into the family. With guided sections, the older sibling will share their favorite Bible stories and songs, favorite foods, special toys, photos, drawings, and other fun information.

Funny, warm, poignant author memoir 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

In 35 short chapters, Ralph Fletcher shares stories of his childhood neighborhood, family, and friends. Covering topics that include a description of his neighborhood, his feelings and memories of the important people in his life, games he played, school days, pets, and childhood illnesses, this story kept me entranced from start to finish. I loved the author's simple yet moving revelation of his own feelings, especially the poignant chapter about his father, "Last Kiss."

Publisher information sets reader age at grades 5 to 8, but the kid-friendly layout of this book will appeal to readers in grades 2-4, particularly if read aloud. Teens working on author reports or personal essays will find the book interesting as well. Teachers will find this memoir a handy tool in writing workshops, if used in conjunction with specific writing topics such as description, characterization, or dialogue. Fletcher's use of details brings his stories to life. Student writers can learn much about turning ordinary life events and feelings into effective stories.

As an adult reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's got a little something for every reader. I can't recommend this book enough for teachers. If you assign journal writing for young writers, this book will provide infinite topic inspiration.

Editorial Review:

Imagine learning from a nosy classmate that your mother is having yet another baby. To Ralphs classmates, news of one more Fletcher baby is just scuttlebutt. But for Ralph, the oldest of nine, being part of a large family means more kids to join in the funfrom making tripods in the woods and snicking up the rug, to raising chicks and even discovering a meteor (well, maybe). It doesnt feel like theres life beyond Marshfield, Massachusetts. Then one day Dads new job moves the family to Chicago, and theres so much Ralph has to leave behind. In this humorous and captivating memoir, Ralph Fletcher traces the roots of his storytelling.

NECESSARY GUIDE FOR PRE-TEEN BOYS 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Bill Zimmerman, the author, was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his writings for young people about current events and issues they face. He is former editor of Newsday, the nation's largest newspaper, and author of over a dozen books. 100 Things Guys Need To Know is an EXCELLENT cartoon styled book for pre-adolescent and adolescent boys to help them cope with the changes in their bodies, emotions, and relationships in a positive way. Nothing is more important than helping a youth know that making wise choices amidst peer pressure and internal quandaries is a good thing. This book is the perfect tool to help any boy (ages 9 - 13) thrive in his teen years and understand what is happening to himself internally and physically as well as socially. The book teaches good skills and positive choices and healthy habits in six categories: Self, Body and Mind, Family, School, Relationships, Future. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It is written to the youngster himself and is easy enough to understand, and the cartoons help the boy identify with situations common to every teen. The book is also an excellent one to read with your children to open conversation about issues you may not know he is dealing with at school or other areas of his life. A WONDERFUL book to give any boy you know, love, and want to make wise choices in order to navigate the turbulent teen years successfully and create a happy, future for himself. Editorial Review:

Boys need and want advice on all kinds of issues, for all kinds of questions and concerns. To them, it seems that most self-help books are written for girls. Everything about this book is for and about guys. Graphic-novel-style illustrations engage even reluctant readers. Quotes from real boys, results from a nationwide survey, stories, and facts keep them interested. Prompts invite boys to think about each topic and what it means to them-from family life to fitting in, showing emotions, bullies, school, peer pressure, failure, anger, and more.Correct the page count; it is 128 pp.

Correct the age range; it is 9 to 13.

"Perfect for Every Parent" 5 stars
I thought these books were about prayers for little kids. This is not the case. They are prayers parents can say in honor of their child. They are devotional in nature. The prayers for boys are for the boys to have leadership, passion, faith, and etc... The prayers for girls are for the girls to learn obedience to God, humbleness, holiness, purity, and etc....
Each prayer is based upon a bible verse or two and amazing paintings. The paintings in the book for boys, by Tom Browning, are vivid and full of adventure. The paintings in the book for girls, by Sandra Kuck, are whimsical and heart-felt.
I have read a few of Stormie Omartian's other books, and I have not been a fan; she tends to be a bit too charismatic in her beliefs for my liking. These books are for every parent, regardless of their denomination. These books would make for great gifts for parents-to-be and for Mother's Day and Father's Day.

Editorial Review:

Stormie Omartian, bestselling author of The Power of a Praying® Parent, captures the heart of every parent, grandparent, and special caregiver in this collection of prayers and promises for little boys. Each page is beautifully illustrated with the work of oil painter Tom Browning—well known for his nostalgic paintings of gentle family moments. Page after page, a little boy’s adventure–filled life is depicted, special prayers are presented, and a loving opportunity for sharing is experienced.

This special book, sure to become a keepsake, will capture the heart of the one praying as much as the little one listening. As the young boy hears tender prayers and sweet blessings whispered for his health and protection, faith and wisdom, he’ll draw near—and find a safe place to rest after his busy–boy day.

My son loved it. It is meant for elementary age children. But older children would enjoy it too.

Good Life Lessons 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was very good in teaching life lessons. I didn't buy it for younger children but for 11, 13, and 15 year olds. It is amazing how you just lay something around and they read it. Now if I had MADE them read it they would have considered it quite childish. It is such a simple lesson on how so many things will change us, yet all of us, even adults fall into the trap of, "Not me, I can watch a bad movie, look at bad pictures, listen to bad music and still walk away the same". It pointed out that even knights had weaknesses they needed to guard against and pride will get you everytime. James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Editorial Review:

Picking up where the storybook, "The Squire and the Scroll," left off, this easy-to-use devotional covers biblical teachings on purity, integrity, and God's plan for relationships with your child in a nonthreatening and age-appropriate way. These life lessons are packed with wisdom from God's Word, truths that young men need to know as they navigate the paths that lead to an adult life of integrity and honor. You and your son can build a godly heritage with these short, practical, life-changing studies and activities that can be personalized for any age. An optional "Squires of the Lantern Ceremony" is also included as an exciting and memorable way to formally celebrate your son's growth.

Another great addition to the "Be a Boy" genre..... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This combination trivia & activity book, accompanied by the clear, gorgeous photographs DK is famous for, is an excellent book for kids who don't naturally gravitate towards boyscout type activities.

Your child will learn whether frogs have ears, the advantages of recycling, how to make a worm farm, how to turn old jeans into a book bag, all about fireflies, how to make sidewalk chalk, how to be safe on the Internet, whether rats get sweaty, how to pick up a snake, and more.

It's a wonderful armchair read, but your child will probably want to do a couple of the activities in the book, so be ready to help him gather supplies. Highly recommended for ages 9-12.

Editorial Review:

Because boys will be boys...-here's a completely quirky, totally random kind of book to inspire boys of all ages, and parents alike! . It's full of information, facts, and trivia to fill your brain, and loaded with tons of activities, games, and things to do to jump start your body.
