The Bible is still the Bible, no matter the cover 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read many of the reviews here, and while I disagree with some of them I agree wholeheartedly with the majority of them. First, I don't feel that by "repackaging" the Bible in a different format is sacrilige. It was only a few hundred years ago that the Bible was solely copied onto individual scrolls. I am inclined to believe that the clerics of that time were horrified that the Bible was "lumped" together and made accessible to the masses. With that in mind; I have purchased five of these books, for my nephews and some young men that I mentor. I find it to be a very good translation, and it is a way to get young people who may not otherwise read the Bible to pick it up. As for the comments that it talks too much about music, sports, and dating, I must point out that the "regular" Bible talks about all of those things also. The side bars that mention those topics always refer the reader to the passages that the information is taken from. Most young people (and some "old" people for that matter) do not realize that the Bible talks about all of those things, and then some. No, we are not to bring Christ to people on "their terms," but we must always remember that Jesus himself ministered to people and taught in ways that were relevant to them. If there is any doubt, refer to the fact that Jesus did 99% of his teacher via parables. It is very important to make sure that people know and understand that while Jesus won't accept them on "their" terms, He will accept them as they are - imperfect human beings. My opinion is that if these Biblezines will get one person to read God's word that wouldn't have ordinarily read it, or if one person who has read other Bibles can read this and have a new understanding of God's word, then these Biblezines have served their purposes.

Editorial Review:

Stereotypes and the pressure to conform often smother the creativity of boys and leave their fresh, original ideas unheard. Boys Know It All is a place where boys can speak their piece about what it is to be a boy. Boys, ages 6-16, have written chapters offering helpful hints for tough situations like talking to girls and surviving older siblings, while others toss out ways to fill free time creatively like inventing your own family traditions and taking care of pets. This is a fun book that also tackles serious issues about growing up male in America. Boys will enjoy reading it and will even get excited about learning and trying new things. Some sample chapters are:

* Doin' Your Own Thang--a 13-year-old's story of dealing with teasing from peers about his career as a professional tap dancer.
* Gone Fishin'--tips on catching frogs, bugs, and other creatures and how to care for them if you decide to keep them.
* Toughing It Out--an 11-year-old tells the story of his battle with a brain tumor and encourages others to "just hang in there" when life gets tough.
* Chivalry Isn't Dead--four boys from Memphis, Tennessee give hints on how to impress girls, friends, and family by being a classy "gentleman."

I provided it for my son and now for my grandsons. 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

In the days of cotillion and other social occasions, my son surreptitiously found the information he needed in this book that just happened to be in his bookcase. He was openly delighted when the updated version arrived for his son's first birthday. It is written in such a manner that young boys don't feel preached to. I do disagree with the age classification you have given it.

It works!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

My boys are grown - in their 30s and blessed with the manners that would make even the most picky parent proud. And it all started with this book. They've both told me they accepted it immediately because (1) it never preached or talked down to them, and (2) it gave them really cool ideas (like putting gum down the drain - let's forget about that). Each found it amazing that he was able to actually stand up, shake hands, and say "how do you do" without feeling like a dork, and then realizing that it made a real difference in how adults responded. That first success had them hooked, and they never looked back. Now it's time for the grandsons, and their dads are thrilled that the book is still going strong. And so is grandpa.

"Hanging Low, Keeping Cool," "A Hairy Question," "Feeling Private/Feeling Guilty," "You Don't See Any Blind, Crazy Morons Around Here, Do Ya?"

Can you guess what all these chapter titles are about? Give you a hint: everything you ever wanted to know about (but were afraid to ask)... You got it, boys and puberty! Author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded and updated their sensitive, detailed, often witty guide for boys on the cusp of adolescence. To help boys realize they are not alone in their concerns about masturbation, body hair, growth spurts (or lack thereof), female puberty, voice changes, perspiration, shaving, and sexuality, this classic guide is written in a down-to-earth, nonjudgmental style and filled with answers to the many questions boys have as their bodies begin the transformation into adulthood. As a result of thousands of reader letters over the years, as well as the ever growing body of information about puberty in boys, the third edition has been revised to include more detailed discussion of penis size (the authors get more questions about penis size than all other topics combined), updated information on acne treatment, expanded sections on eating right, exercise, steroid abuse, and weight training, and important facts about STDs, AIDS, and birth control. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, and diagrams, the guide is designed with the understanding that some boys and parents will want to read it together, while others will want to pore over it on their own. Either way, this resource will prove to be incredibly useful for boys and their parents over these strange, exciting years. The companion volume for girls, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls is a must-read as well. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

Editorial Review:

The title of the first chapter of this workbook, printed in a wavy, spooky font, is "What's Happening to You?" Appropriate, when you think about the emotional and physical changes wrought in a boy's body as he enters puberty. Based on the bestselling classic by mother-daughter team Lynda Madaras and Area Madaras, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys, this workbook by the same authors uses games, drawings, photographs, quizzes, personal stories, checklists, and other activities to help boys learn about the transformations that will take place in their bodies during puberty. Similar to the My Body, My Self for Girls workbook, but with a more masculine slant (and obviously, a lot of different information), this is an invaluable resource for boys with questions, curiosity, and a need for reassurance. Topics covered include skin and hair changes, body image, acne, reproductive organs, voice changes, masturbation, and more. Although What's Happening to My Body? explores these issues in greater detail, this workbook enables boys to delve into the nitty-gritty of puberty on a more personal level. One exercise, called "Racewriting," asks boys to write--whatever comes into their heads and as fast as they can--about their feelings about growing up. Then there's the "Test Your I.Q. with This P.Q." true-false puberty quiz. Tremendously useful side features list acne do's and don'ts, ways to cope with erections ("wear baggy pants and long shirts if they keep happening, just remember that it's probably more noticeable to you than to anyone else"), and dangerous side effects of steroids. Written in a lively, nonthreatening style, the authors have placed a strong emphasis on honest, straight talk about the concerns that boys are bound to have as they approach adulthood. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

Excellent Potty Book - Kids love the sounds 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I simply love this potty book. I have two children of potty training age...a boy and a girl and I bought both versions of it. My kids love the book and really like the flushing sound. Now when we have "Potty Time" the kids even say "flush, flush, flush" just like the book.

Good Starter Book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As you start to introduce your son to potty training this is a good book. It is a board book with colorful pictures that show a young boy using the potty. It has simple wording that is easy to follow. However, I, too, found that after a few pushes of the flush button it stopped working.

The book is basic though. So if your son has already started sitting on the potty it may not be as relevant. It doesn't talk about having accidents, that you need to sit and wait sometimes for the potty to come out, or how to know when you need to go. But it does talk about the process of peeing or pooing, wiping, flushing, and washing your hands.

It has a cute write on/wipe off success chart in the back of the book. I didn't find that useful, but some parents might.

Editorial Review:

Toilet training is a natural step in a child's development. With this book and a little bit of parental patience, toilet training will be easy and rewarding for both parent and child. Includes a toilet flushing sound chip which brings giggles and laughter to toddlers learning this essential life skill. It also features a potty training progress chart!

Actual photographs of the construction stuff your kids love 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My son loves trucks (he's 15 mos. old) and he loves this book. It is his favorite. Definitely buy it for your little truck lover too (whenever my son sees a bulldozer, he now says "bull" after reading this book over and over!).

Incorrect names for equipment but good book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I would really like this book but unfortunately the author uses the wrong names for some of the construction equipment. We will continue to enjoy the book until my daughter learns to read. After that...

The most glaring misname is the crawler EXCAVATOR which Tana calls a crawler backhoe. The wheeled backhoe is referred to as a backhoe. Plus forklift is normally used for the small machines you think of in warehouses not the larger construction site equipment.

For those who are really interested the other industry names are Manlift (cherry picker), Telescopic Handler (forklift), Telescopic Handler being used like a crane (forklift crane).

Editorial Review:

Crisp, clear, full-color photographs show all the fascinating machines and earthmovers found at a construction site. Even the very youngest readers will want to put on hard hats!

"The roaring power of 13 construction machines is captured in clear, brilliantly colored photographs." -- Booklist
