Editorial Review:

In France, low wages have historically inspired tremendous political controversy. The social and political issues at stake center on integrating the working class into society and maintaining the stability of the republican regime. A variety of federal policies--including high minimum wages and strong employee protection--serve to ensure that the low-wage workforce stays relatively small. Low-Wage Work in France examines both the benefits and drawbacks of this politically inspired system of worker protection. France's high minimum wage, which is indexed not only to inflation but also to the average increase in employee wages, plays a critical role in limiting the development of low-paid work. Social welfare benefits and a mandatory thirty-five hour work week also make life easier for low-wage workers. Strong employee protection is a central characteristic of the French model, but high levels of protection for employees may also be one of the causes of France's chronically high rate of unemployment. The threat of long-term unemployment may, in turn, contribute to a persistent sense of insecurity among French workers. Low-Wage Work in France provides a lucid analysis of how a highly regulated labor market shapes the experiences of workers--for better and for worse.

Editorial Review:

Over the last three decades, large-scale economic developments, such as technological change, the decline in unionization, and changing skill requirements, have exacted their biggest toll on low-wage workers. These workers often possess few marketable skills and few resources with which to support themselves during periods of economic transition. In Working and Poor, a distinguished group of economists and policy experts, headlined by editors Rebecca Blank, Sheldon Danziger, and Robert Schoeni, examine how economic and policy changes over the last twenty-five years have affected the well-being of low-wage workers and their families.

Working and Poor examines every facet of the economic well-being of less-skilled workers, from employment and earnings opportunities to consumption behavior and social assistance policies. Rebecca Blank and Heidi Shierholz document the different trends in work and wages among less-skilled women and men. Between 1979 and 2003, labor force participation rose rapidly for these women, along with more modest increases in wages, while among the men both employment and wages fell. David Card and John DiNardo review the evidence on how technological changes have affected less-skilled workers and conclude that the effect has been smaller than many observers claim. Philip Levine examines the effectiveness of the Unemployment Insurance program during recessions. He finds that the program's eligibility rules, which deny benefits to workers who have not met minimum earnings requirements, exclude the very people who require help most and should be adjusted to provide for those with the highest need. On the other hand, Therese McGuire and David Merriman show that government help remains a valuable source of support during economic downturns. They find that during the most recent recession in 2001, when state budgets were stretched thin, legislatures resisted political pressure to cut spending for the poor.

Working and Poor provides a valuable analysis of the role that public policy changes can play in improving the plight of the working poor. A comprehensive analysis of trends over the last twenty-five years, this book provides an invaluable reference for the public discussion of work and poverty in America.

Editorial Review:

This engaging ethnography examines the gendered nature of today's large corporate law firms. Although increasing numbers of women have become lawyers in the past decade, Jennifer Pierce discovers that the double standards and sexist attitudes of legal bureaucracies are a continuing problem for women lawyers and paralegals.
Working as a paralegal, Pierce did ethnographic research in two law offices, and her depiction of the legal world is quite unlike the glamorized version seen on television. Pierce tellingly portrays the dilemma that female attorneys face: a woman using tough, aggressive tactics--the ideal combative litigator--is often regarded as brash or even obnoxious by her male colleagues. Yet any lack of toughness would mark her as ineffective.
Women paralegals also face a double bind in corporate law firms. While lawyers depend on paralegals for important work, they also expect these women--for most paralegals are women--to nurture them and affirm their superior status in the office hierarchy. Paralegals who mother their bosses experience increasing personal exploitation, while those who do not face criticism and professional sanction. Male paralegals, Pierce finds, do not encounter the same difficulties that female paralegals do.
Pierce argues that this gendered division of labor benefits men politically, economically, and personally. However, she finds that women lawyers and paralegals develop creative strategies for resisting and disrupting the male-dominated status quo. Her lively narrative and well-argued analysis will be welcomed by anyone interested in today's gender politics and business culture.

When I first read the book, I was in my last year of college and didn't know which directions to head towards the career I wanted in film. I found many books, but this one definitely stood out form the others. It gave me a list of every career opportunity in the film business and how to get started. I am now working my way up the ladder to a successful career. I highly recommend this to every one that expects to achieve their goals in film.

The Most helpful book I have ever read 5 out of 5 stars.

Traditional Ideas 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I waited a long time for this book - it was on back-order. And while it gave some good information about jobs I already knew existed, it didn't really give me any ideas for jobs I hadn't already considered.

So, if you want a traditional job involving travel, or to work in the travel industry, buy this book for more details and contact information. Don't buy it if, like me, you're looking for new ideas on how to make a living on the road.

More than a book about travel jobs 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

For the reviewers who feel this book doesn't go into enough depth for travel jobs you have missed the point and unfortunately your career(s) will suffer from this. The book talks about travel jobs and gives websites etc. But more importantly it will help open your eyes to approaching your job search from the standpoint of doing what 'you' want to do - not what an employer puts down in a 3 sentence job description. This book is actually one of the best 'career guides' I have seen. Do yourself a favor and read between the lines here.

Editorial Review:

This book identifies numerous jobs that enable individuals to travel both at home and abroad. Dispelling 54 myths, exploring key motivation, and outlining effective job search strategies.

Because student learning depends on quality instructors, teacher hiring is perhaps the single most important issue facing schools today. In Effective Teacher Hiring: A Guide to Getting the Best, Kenneth D. Peterson presents an innovative, multi-tiered framework for teacher selection. The program is sufficiently flexible to use in school systems large or small, but designed rigorously enough to provide for checks and balances at every turn, guarantee a voice in the process for students and parents, and ensure that only the best available candidates are ultimately chosen.

In addition to step-by-step instructions for implementing the hiring program, Effective Teacher Hiring offers
* Lists of hiring dos and don'ts
* Resume and portfolio assessment strategies
* Sample recruitment flyers, contracts, and interview questions
* A rundown of legal issues related to hiring

We must ensure that our students have the best available teachers--and to get the best, we must first learn how best to hire. This book is an invaluable resource for educators committed to providing the best possible instruction to their students.
