amazing breadth of job paths covered 5 out of 5 stars.
55 of 57 people found this review helpful.

I originally thought that the main focus of this book would be about veterinarians, in fact, it covers the whole range of animal related careers, from working in a pet store to becoming a vet, and all the places you could go after you've become a vet. It has a very helpful chapter on the process of getting in to vet school. The financial aid and acceptance policies are different from those of other schools, and all fall under a single overseeing board for all the schools. All the schools are listed here along with contact info for each. All very detailed.

This is great!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book deserves more attention. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a midlife career-changer I've read many career-oriented books in the last couple of years. I found this one to be more helpful than most. I enjoyed the chapters on value clarification. The idea of "quieting" resonating with what I feel the need to do within myself. Also, Charland's emphasis on "venturing" is helpful in applying the insights gained through introspection. The real world examples were inspirational. The tone of the book was just right: authoritative without feeling heavy. It struck the correct light and lively tone, in my opinion. Overall I feel like this book deserves a larger audience it has likely so far received as the product of a relatively small publisher. Thanks to the author for his wisdom and guidance.

Editorial Review:

Bill Charland, career counselor and employment training consultant, shows how to find meaningful work today by asking the right question-and listening carefully for the answers. The author of The Idiot's Guide to Changing Careers (Macmillan, 1998) takes a deeper look here at work-its history, meaning, and current trends. Drawing on his experience, as well as writings from biblical texts, Quaker, and other religious and literary works, he shares stories of those who have found personal satisfaction in their work and offers practical guidance for the search.

Editorial Review:

Founded in the Middle Ages, the craftsmen's guilds of France oversaw the stonecutters, plasterers, woodworkers, and other skilled artisans who built their country's great cathedrals, chteaux, and other monuments. Today, these ancient guilds have adapted yet continue to nurture a tradition of fine craftsmanship in many professions.

Richly illustrated with hundreds of color photographs and illustrations, this unique book brings to life the history, traditions, and achievements of these remarkable organizations. Franois Icher, author of Abrams' popular Building the Great Cathedrals, examines the origins of the guilds and the rigors of apprenticeship, and profiles the 25 traditional crafts. He also takes readers along on a journeyman's "Tour de France," revealing the guilds' legacy of art, architecture, and craftsmanship in 16 cities from Chartres to Tours.

271 illustrations, 211 in full color, 9 3/4 x 12 1/4"

FRANOIS ICHER, a scholar specializing in the guilds and craftsmen of Europe, is the author of Building the Great Cathedrals.

Editorial Review:

Early China is best known for the dazzling artifacts it has left behind. These terracotta figures, gilt-bronze lamps, and other material remnants of the Chinese past unearthed during archaeological excavations are often viewed without regard to the social context of their creation, yet they were made by real individuals who contributed greatly to the foundations of early Chinese culture. With Artisans in Early Imperial China, Anthony Barbieri-Low combines historical, epigraphic, and archaeological analysis to refocus our gaze from the glittering objects and monuments of China to the men and women who made them.

This book represents the first in-depth social history of artisans in early China. How did they live? How were they trained? How did they market their products? How free were they? In this engaging and illuminating analysis, Barbieri-Low explores these artisans' lives and careers from a variety of aspects. First, he examines their position within early Chinese society, analyzing their social status, social mobility, and role in the early Chinese economy. Delving deeper, he steps into their workshops to learn how they were trained, what tools they used, and what workplace hazards they faced. Following their wares to the marketplace, he investigates some of the marketing techniques used by artisans and merchants, including such startlingly modern practices as family trademarks, rhyming jingles, and knockoffs of royal products.

From the dirt and din of the marketplace, Barbieri-Low enters the rarefied air of the court, with its own visual and material culture and its own professional artisans. This court was constructed upon the backs of yet another class of artisans, the most abject, those found in labor camps and slave markets. These were the men and women who built and decorated many of the great palaces, temples, and tombs of early China. Barbieri-Low compellingly argues that the state used a cold-blooded mathematical formula to optimally exploit these coerced laborers without upsetting the balance of the economy or fostering revolt.

Artisans in Early Imperial China humanizes the material remains of the past, revealing the men and women who made the beautiful artifacts we know today. This book will appeal to anyone interested in Chinese history, as well as to scholars of comparative social history, labor history, and Asian art history.
