Editorial Review:

Resorts have become important to American society and its economy; one in eight Americans is now employed by the tourism industry. Yet despite the ubiquity of hotels, little has been written about those who labor there. Drawing on eight years of participant observation and in-depth interviews, the renowned ethnographers Patricia A. Adler and Peter Adler reveal the occupational culture and lifestyles of workers at five luxury Hawaiian resorts.

These resorts employ a workforce that is diverse in gender, class, ethnicity, and nationality. Hawaiian resort workers, like those in nearly all resorts, consist of four groups. New immigrants hold difficult and dirty low-status jobs for little pay. Locals provide an authentic Polynesian flavor for guests, a ready pool of youthful high-turnover employees, and a population trapped in a place that offers few occupational alternatives. Managers tend to be middle-class, college-educated young and middle-aged men from the mainland whose lifestyles are occupationally transient. Seekers, mostly young, white, and from the mainland as well, escape to paradise seeking adventure, warmth, extreme sports, or some alternate life experiences.

The Adlers describe the work, lives, and careers of these four groups that labor in organizations that never close, with shifts scheduled around the clock and around the year. Paradise Laborers adds to the growing interest in the global flow of labor, as these immigrant workers display different trends in gendered opportunities and mobility than those exhibited by other groups. The authors propose a political economy of tourist labor in which they compare the different expectations and rewards of organizations, employees, and local labor markets.

Excellent resource for the US resident jobseakers 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read this book and it is excellent. Whatit is light on are recent policy changes, hot openings areas and good definitin of residency exeption, the onsite contractor opportunities and the educational/industrial partnership availablities. It is heartwarming to know even in this harsh erra of trial by fire downsizing in the federal arena, there are still 38000 great jobs in NSA, 5100 PTO positions and 52000 in the Defense Investigative Service. So many openings in high end administrative, tech savy,or secure positions with so few willing and able candidates obsessed with private industry.Too bad there entrance requirements for most mean you'd have to be a fresh college grad, PhD (at 57k and secure US resident) or not have a single mark on your police or financial record. Kinda tight requirements in national security regions these days.

Good general overview 4 out of 5 stars.

It was very useful for me to see all the agencies listed with their web sites, numbers and typical background/degrees of new hires. This allowed me to narrow my focus. The main weakness for me was not enough info on KSA's, fed resumes and actual interviews. I would recomend this book, but also suggest you pick up another to complement it...

Editorial Review:

A reference for finding the ultimate federal job. Provides a complete databank of thousands of entry-level positions. Softcover.

Editorial Review:

The Danish economy offers a dose of American labor market flexibility inside a European welfare state. The Danish government allows employers a relatively high level of freedom to dismiss workers, but also provides generous unemployment insurance. Widespread union coverage and an active system of collective bargaining help regulate working conditions in the absence of strong government regulation. Denmark's rate of low-wage work--8.5 percent--is the lowest of the five countries under analysis. In Low-Wage Work in Denmark, a team of Danish researchers combines comprehensive national registry data with detailed case studies of five industries to explore why low-end jobs are so different in Denmark. Some jobs that are low-paying in the United States, including hotel maids and meat processors, though still demanding, are much more highly compensated in Denmark. And Danes, unlike American workers, do not stay in low-wage jobs for long. Many go on to higher paying jobs, while a significant minority ends up relying temporarily on income support and benefits sustained by one of the highest tax rates in the world. Low-Wage Work in Denmark provides an insightful look at the particularities of the Danish labor market and the lessons it holds for both the United States and the rest of Europe.

Great jobs? 1 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book was not that informative to a person with even a small knowledge of art. The title makes it sound like there is a long list of unique and fun jobs, but more than half the book is basics about how to find and apply for a job- any job, not a great job. It only talks about 5 BASIC paths that any idiot would already know about. If you need to know the BASICS get this book.

Editorial Review:

Great Jobs For . . . Each book in this series helps students discover new employment possibilities, assess strengths and interests, and develop a path for advancement and success in a chosen field. Ideal for those exploring which major to take in college.

Editorial Review:

This book connects the story of a group of migrant workers to the question of why Paris became the nineteenth century's "capital of revolution," and why this stage of the city's history ended. The stonemasons were well-known for their skills, their seasonal migration from central France, but especially for their role in rebellion. They were set apart by a persistent reputation tying them to the city's tumultuous legacy and to a physical location - the Place de Greve - where they sought jobs. Parisians and police saw the masons as part of the "dangerous classes," while to bosses they were considered "docile." The frequency with which the stonemasons were arrested following political unrest had no precedent. This analysis is the only one that places the masons' story within the larger history of nineteenth-century Paris. The coverage spans the long nineteenth century, starting before 1789 and ending near 1914.
