A Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Although one reviewer here bitterly insists that you must "know someone" in order to be published or produced, this is far from the case...as my own career attests! I was a complete newbie and managed to get published on the first try (and got reasonable pay, too).

But back to the book. It is invaluable. Period.

Here you'll learn everything you need to know about copyright, contracts, publishing and producing, and much, much more. If you want to be a working writer for the stage, you're gonna need this book. :)

Editorial Review:

A left-brained book for right-brained people. Or maybe it's the other way around. Subtitled A Complete Business Guide for Playwrights, Composers, Lyricists, and Librettists, the book sets out clearly and straightforwardly what to expect, what your responsibilities are, what your rights are, how much to charge for your services and how to protect yourself as a professional theater writer today. It's all here: copyrights, agents, contracts, script approval, credits, royalties . . . all the stuff that could make you--or break you.

This book is for us all 4 out of 5 stars.
39 of 44 people found this review helpful.

I'm an NT, called such by Aspies and NLDers. We are considered neurotypical. I suggest that all of us NT's would benefit by reading this book. In my case, I had a young friend who was having a difficult time going from high school to her first job. Yvona sheds light on page 211 of the book: "(employers) find it puzzling that some smart employees have trouble neatly stapling a bunch of papers together or mailing a letter." At the time, I wondered about such issues and, with a lot of luck and some internet searching, came up with a paper written by Susan Thompson. As I read her account, tears ran down my face. All the years I knew this girl I had thought she had some character flaw. Why else would she be so indifferent to what was obvious to me?
I subscribed to the YahooGroup called NLD-in-Common (see page 310). When I was accepted as a member I posted my customary hello. The first person to respond was Yvona. As time went on, I realized she always accepted new members. She was so giving of herself, telling of her personal job miseries. It was obvious to me that she was a talented writer. When I found she was writing this book, I could hardly wait for it to arrive.
The book tells so much. Finally, I am beginning to "get it." Those with various aspects of learning disabilities are described so vividly that we NT's can begin to get a grip on what makes some people "different," not retarded or lazy or unloving. Ambition, intelligence, honesty, tenacity--those words are more apt.
My little friend? She's employed, doing it her way. I'm hanging in there with her.

Editorial Review:

Most people with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder (NLD) or Asperger Syndrome (AS) are underemployed. This book sets out to change this. With practical and technical advice on everything from job hunting to interview techniques, from 'fitting in' in the workplace to whether or not to disclose a diagnosis, this book guides people with NLD or AS successfully through the employment mine field. There is also information for employers, agencies and careers counsellors on AS and NLD as 'invisible' disabilities, including an analysis of the typical strengths of somebody with NLD or AS, and how to use these positively in the workplace. Practical information and lists of career resources are supported by numerous case studies to inspire and advise. An essential resource for people with NLD or AS seeking or in employment and their existing or potential employers.

Editorial Review:

The 1970s were tumultuous years in American prisons, beginning with the bloody uprising at Attica and ending with the even bloodier one at New Mexico State. The Massachusetts prison system was one of the most seriously afflicted. Murders, suicides, riots, strikes, and mass escapes were only the most obvious manifestations of a system in turmoil.

Hooray for nonprofits! 3 out of 5 stars.
29 of 32 people found this review helpful.

Hamilton and Tragert give a decent survey of nonprofit organizations, rating their top 100. I was dissappointed that they included more corporate non-profits, like the NRA, and not very many localized charities, even if they're budgets are small. Also, the "potent quote" listed at the end of each entry is usually just a quote pulled from the organization's website, which shows lazy research, and can often lack potency

some attractive options for your career search 5 out of 5 stars.

Beginning with a definition of a nonprofit organization (it lies between government and business, it's typically about social change or improvement, it may be controversial, and it provides a service), this book ranks organizations which employ over 100 people, have an annual budget of over $1 million, has been in business at least three years, and whose culture is somehow linked to its mission.

From Amnesty to Cousteau, from the Nature Conservancy to Zoo Atlanta, here is a brief description of well-known or lesser-known organizations. You'll have a point of contact, a statement of philosophy, and some assistance in identifying your dream organizations. There are also some tips on job-hunting in the nonprofit world. It's fascinating reading!

Editorial Review:

The lives of coal miners in the United States, like the black rock they cut from the earth, are wrought by the forces of time and pressure. Risking crippling injury and death, generations of miners have tunneled down from the surface and emerged at the end of each exhausting day with the fuel needed to drive the nation’s industry. Their sacrifices are great, their glories unheralded. With this stirring account, author and former coal miner Joseph W. Leonard III provides a means for understanding and fully appreciating the crucial work these brave men have done throughout the years. The mining tradition in Leonard's family spans five generations in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, home to some of our country's richest deposits of anthracite coal. His family's stories illustrate with touching candor the plight of many thousands of Coal Belt families who stood proud through years of watching their sons, fathers, and husbands descend down the shafts into darkness. Leonard recalls with stunning detail the unforgiving conditions—cave-ins, explosions, and choking dust—that he and his forebears endured in the mines. Also captured are poignant tales of the kindness and compassion that permeated mining communities in the face of so much hardship. The intense struggles and quiet successes in Anthracite Roots are a testament to the unsung heroes of America’s coal mines and the work they have done to power a nation.

not much information 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

i bought this book thinking it would give me more information than what i could find on the internet. however, there wasn't really anything in here that i hadn't already read.

also, the salary information in the mechanical engineering section seems very low, at least compared to other things i've read, as well i've engineers i've talked to.

if you really want to learn more about engineering as a career (or any job for that matter), visit this website: http://www.bls.gov/search/ooh.asp?ct=OOH. the author even refers to this site in the book. the book itself basically repeats and summarizes stuff from the website, but leaves out a lot of more important material.
