If you ever feel like you're the only one suffering 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Read this book! It's full of delicious anectotes and wry observations about the workplace and the tendency forpeople to treat those in the service industry like servants.

Ryan is able to, in a light and humorous way, portray the desperation of wage slaves and their plight.

For here, to go, or any other way you can get it 5 out of 5 stars.

What a riot. I LOVED this book. Maybe I should provide a very brief history of my first jobs: My first job was as a dishwasher. Later, I was promoted to busboy, then to cook, then finally to waiter, all over a span of many years. Even if you've only held one such job (Cabbie? Bartender?), you will relate to all of the stories, since really, how many jobs can you name that AREN'T service oriented?

This collection of stories is simultaneously irreverent, entertaining, insightful, a little nuts and even disturbing. Actually, it is more than a great collection of stories. This book is also a collection interviews, photographs, drawings and even a graphic short story (for lack of a better description), all relating to one of a myriad of different service industries that everyone seems to have worked for at one time, or another. After reading the entire book, I must admit I am glad I never worked some of the jobs referred to in a few of the stories... That is one thing I love about engaging books, however. I enjoy reading stories that create new experiences for me (vicariously, that is).

About 1/3 of the way through the collection of stories, I started turning to each of the chapters that had Ryan's name attached to them (interviews or as the author). After finishing the entire book, I am dying to find other things Ryan has written or edited.

Attention: Leah Ryan! Where are more books by you? I need another fix.

Attention: Everyone else. Buy this book, and enjoy. Thoroughly.

Editorial Review:

Cartoons, photos, essays and stories fill this insightful book about the service industry. From the diary of a dishwasher to the grind of an exotic dancer, For Here or To Go is an astonishing eyewitness account of America's new service economy.

Editorial Review:

An eye-opening first-hand account of life in a WWII shipyard from a woman's perspective

In 1942, Katherine Archibald, a graduate student at Berkeley, left the halls of academe to spend two years working in a nearby Oakland shipyard. She arrived with a host of preconceptions about the American working class, race relations and the prospect for their improvement, and wartime unity. Her experience working in a shipyard where women were seen as intruders, where "Okies" and black migrants from the South were regarded with barely-disguised hatred, and where trade unions preferred protecting their turf to defending workers' rights, threw much of her liberal faith into doubt.

Archibald's 1947 book about her experiences, Wartime Shipyard: A Study in Social Disunity, remains a classic account of life and labor on the home front. This new edition includes an introduction written by historians Eric Arnesen and Alex Lichtenstein, who explore Archibald's work in light of recent scholarship on women and African Americans in the wartime workplace.

The true people's history of the mines 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The best part about this book is that it was written 20 years after June originally arrived in Bolivia to write a book on the miners. Now she has returned and reviews the history of those 20 years and shows where today's miners, family and culture stands. This book is not a comparision of the past with the present but rather a building upon a tremendous history and struggle.

For the person not familiar with the mines and miners of Bolivia this is an excelent introduction. Here one meets a world turned upside down and inside out. Mountains are filled with spirits and miners, men ans women - side by side - fight for a better life. June enables one to share in the peoples' long history of struggle through insightful first hand accounts. She also shares her personal experience while reporting the stories and brings a more human element to the work.

June has done an excellent job identifyng and bringing to light the intricate web of cultural, political, and economical elements of Bolivian mining. I myself have relatives from the mining regions of Bolivia and wish to congratulate June on her depth and understanding of the people she presents. It is rare to find someone that has the ability to understand the cultural nuances that have a 5,000 year old tradition and see how the still prevail, albiet sometimes hidden or changed, in today's world. I wish to congratulate her on taking the time to understand the people she was studying and not perpetuating common stereotypes, of disorder, ignorance or misbegotten religious views.

I highly recommend this book to all!

Editorial Review:

In this powerful anthropological study of a Bolivian tin mining town, Nash explores the influence of modern industrialization on the traditional culture of Quechua-and-Aymara-speaking Indians.

This book is exactly what the title says it is. 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book discusses what needs to be done to ensure success in the workplace. Including a hands-on working assessment; providing structure all day; one on one training. It explains what must be considered; what does, or can the person do; what do they enjoy doing; do well; what is available to work at; what behavioural problems exist; what motivates the person; what kind of support will be needed. A much-welcome book on a subject about which good information is very scarce.

Editorial Review:

Gathering the authors' knowledge and insight gleaned from 15 years of working directly with individuals with autism, this handbook stresses that many people with autism have skills that employers seek. Leaving no aspect of job placement unexplored, this resource details strategies for assessing workers, networking for job opportunities, and tailoring job supports to each individual. Not worth your money. 1 out of 5 stars.

Having purchased the Chicago Jobbank a few years ago, I was excited to see there was a Florida Jobbank. However, it was a huge let-down. There are only a small amount of employers listed in this book. I'm not sure where they compile there listing, but this was a very poor smattering of companies in the entire state of Florida. They aren't even consistent as to which companies are listed. There are some hospitals and some department stores and some small companies and some large corporations. No rhyme or reason as to the collection. You'd get a more comprehensive list of companies going to Chamber of Commerce websites. The book is very disappointing.

This books is also on downsizing. About half of it deals with the psychological aspects of being laid off, the rest with how to strategies to avoid it. An easy read with some valuable ideas. My experience consulting with management companies has shown that the fear of bad stuff happening, like getting laid off, significantly impacts performance. This helps you get your head on straight.
