Good book, excellent pictures 5 out of 5 stars.

The pictures make this book! It would have been great if there were a few more pictures of the various rides.. but thats not what this book is about. From 1800s to 2007, it's all in here!

A beautiful book 5 out of 5 stars.

My Favorite Beaches Book - Inspirational ! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am a beach lover, and as the DVD producer / cameraman of the "Waves: Virtual Vacations" Series here on Amazon.com, this book has been an inspiration to me. The spectacular shots of beaches from around the world are truly extraordinary. Having shot myself hundreds of the best beaches from California, Hawaii, Florida, the Caribbean both with stills and for the DVDs, I can easily say this book is top notch. I highly recommend it. It sits proudly on my desk. And for those who want to see and hear what some of these beaches really feel like, bring this book with you and check out our Waves DVDs here on Amazon.

content 3 out of 5 stars.

This is written for small children and was somewhat a disappointment from the write-up. I was interested in light reading material for adults on vacation in a cottage at the beach.

Great book for Condo 5 out of 5 stars.

I have this in my beach front condo and it fits in great.

Huge disappointment. 1 out of 5 stars.

I bought this (sight unseen of course) for a friend as a small thank you for a wkend gathering at her beach house. I had to find something else however as I hated this book when it arrived in the mail. A collection of "Deep Thoughts" coupled w/not-very-attractive illustrations. Does Amazon take books back? I hope so.

Editorial Review:

With delightful illustrations and simple prose, Sandy Gingras strips away the complicated, structured way of life we cling to and helps us find perspective and appreciation in simple things - like the beach. How to Live at the Beach is a gift book that is at home anywhere, on any coast, or far from it. For the beach is only a metaphor, and with every reading we are awakened: How we might live, how we can pace ourselves, how we can appreciate our world, how we can love.

Editorial Review:

At first glance, the beach may appear to be an endless, flat, monotone landscape meant only for swimming, snoozing, or working on your tan. Upon closer inspection, though, the beach reveals that it has myriad treasures for the curious to locate, such as ephemeral beach ripples decorating the sand, traces of miniature organisms inscribed on dunes, and armored mudballs. Atlantic Coast Beaches, from Maine to Florida, are full of amazing features formed by the interactions between tides, currents, bedrock, weather, beach critters, and much more. Written for a general audience, Atlantic Coast Beaches: A Guide to Ripples, Dunes, and Other Natural Features of the Seashore covers everything, from microscopic nematodes to the potentially cataclysmic changes occurring along the coastline due to rising sea level. Its clear writing, illustrative photographs, and instructive diagrams answer some curious questions, such as why do some sands bark and sing, how do miniature sand volcanoes form, and how do barrier islands migrate?

This book gives a wide variety of all the different spots on a barrier island. we use it in enrichment class and I enjoy the book very much.

An absolute must-have 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I used this book for two summers when I lived on Hilton Head. My job was to drive people around on small boats and teach them about the natural wonders of barrier islands. Since I was a boat captain, not a naturalist, this book saved my bacon many times over. Anytime anyone asked me a question, I'd just grab the book and look it up, and I'd usually give it to them so they could look at the pictures. I recommend this book for anyone living near the coast in the Southeast. In fact, a lot of it is still relevant to folks in the Northeast. Some of the species are different, but the processes are still the same.

What's not clear from Amazon's description is that this book has a unique format. Each page was originally an article in the local paper, so you get one page of info per critter or process. The pages are works of art, hand-drawn and lettered in pen and ink. Any one of them would be worthy of framing. The language is clear and easy to understand, written for laymen but with enough info to satisfy naturalists. In fact, they're so beautiful and well-written that I'm here today to buy a copy for a professor of mine who teaches college classes on the geology and natural history of the East coast. There's nothing in this book he doesn't know or can't look up in a normal reference book. It's the artwork that really makes this book pop.

Don't hesitate to buy this--you won't be disappointed!

Editorial Review:

Born out of fantasy and speculation, designed for fun and profit, Miami Beach has been, from its inception, a city of mythical composition. Its famed Art Deco District was designated a Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and today the area is basking in a revival of interest and attention. Nevertheless, while fashion photographers and entrepreneurs, artists, developers, restaurateurs and club owners flock to the neighborhood, it is still struggling, after years of deterioration and neglect, to recreate itself out of its own forgotten glamour. Despite a new palette of confectionery colors and the renovation of numerous buildings, the Art Deco District remains in need of urban cultivation, of a reinterpretation that transcends its original resort identity. Author Laura Cerwinske introduces Tropical Deco: The Architecture and Design of Old Miami Beach by discussing both the area's past and its future. Throughout her comprehensive exploration of the most concentrated neighborhood of Art Deco buildings in the world, she details the style's evolution and examines its design.

Tropical Deco: The Architecture and Design of Old Miami Beach treats its readers to a delightful view of a unique adaption of a historic architectural style. For, while Miami Beach's Art Deco architecture derives its stylistic roots from the streamlined and electric visions of the cosmopolitan North, Tropical Deco design is much softer and more temperately seductive. These are buildings whose narrative and evocative nature is at once sophisticated, naive and filled with humor.

Get Lonely Planet instead 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I'm an avid traveler, guide book user and guide book writer. I bought this book because it was about 1/2 the size of the Lonely Planet Mexico book (which covers the whole country) and would have been much better off lugging the larger book around for my month on the coast.

Why? The maps are not very good (and do not have content boxes) and there are no bus schedules (note: these are likely not the fault of the author but of the publisher). I didn't agree with some of the restaurant recommendations and found some gems that should have been in the book. There were not enough accommodations listed (and those listed did not need such long descriptions). Confusing driving directions. Mis-information (like stating no surfboard rentals when there were 3 places that rented them) that I did not expect in a book published 2 months prior to my trip.

On a positive note, there is some good background info in the book (history, food, culture).

I know Mexico is a huge place and its hard to nail down everything when researching a guidebook, but as I said, LP did a far better job in producing a more useful book for travelers. Resort tourists looking for a little something outside the gates might be satisfied with this book.

No more Moon for me 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I just returned (Dec 2002) from a trip to Mexico using this publication. This was my third trip with a Moon Handbook. I was not to happy with the one to Baja, I found the one for Costa Rica filled with inaccurate information but this one was the worst.

I found the maps to be mostly useless, directions to places not very helpful, several recommendations absolutely pointless. Even though this book was published OCT 2001, MANY times I was left with the impression that the author NEVER was on-site or has not revisited since the first edition. This guidebook seemed unfocused, information arranged not practical, and descriptions are exaggerated and/or misleading. Case in point - the town of Playa Azul. The town is given almost 4 pages and a rather poetic description is used to make it sound like a pretty cool place. As it turns out the town itself is very run down, many houses are bad repair, most hotels are dirty hole-in-the-walls and the seafood palapa restaurants are in a shape that most travelers that are just a little worried about cleanliness s/would not eat there. Playa Azul is for Mexican budget travelers and offers nothing that could not be had any other place around there.
Barra Vieja would be another example of where the book is off the mark. After reading Mr. Whipperman's description, I was not prepared to drive along a 4 line highway most of the way, past a very nice golf facility and all the construction that was going on there.
.... and this are just two of my grippes about this book.

Despite the book, I had a great time. I saw a very beautiful side of Mexico. I would recommend a trip to Pacific Mexico to anyone. I am going back there in March. I will look for a travel guide I feel more aligned with and whose recommendation I can trust.

Editorial Review:

From exploring Oaxaca's magnificent ruins and sportfishing near Mazatlán to lounging in a beach hideaway on the Nayarit Coast, Moon Handbooks Pacific Mexico is the guide to the best the region has to offer, both on and off the beaten path. Practical information includes suggested travel strategies and lists of must-see sights, plus essentials on dining, transportation, and accommodations for a range of budgets. Complete with details for surfing at Playa Zicatela and attending fiestas in Puerto Vallarta, Moon Handbooks Pacific Mexico gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.
