Stunning Pictures 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Oh, what a beautiful collection of our history here in Santa Monica. One is transported through the century of adventure, discovery and fun as the community grows and changes shape. I felt that I could be there, back in time, if just for a few minutes, with several of the photographs... and the excellent copy. Great to see the original Flash Gordon, Buster Crab, when he was just a swimmer at the beach, like one might be today. Thank you for publishing this collection.

If You Know Santa Monica, Get This Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I grew up in Santa Monica, lived there from the early 50s to 1980. In those days, much of the early history of this wonderful town was still clearly visible. Ernest Marquez has done a wonderful job in writing about the evolution of this beautiful area. For me, he brought back many pleasant memories of my childhood in this town. Marquez has a fine way with his words, and has spread the stories among a nice large collection of photographs. The pace of this book between text and photographs flows nicely. I did not expect to read it cover to cover, but indeed found myself looking forward to reading another chapter every evening before bed. The book is in a quality binding, with good quality paper, and excellent reproduction quality of the photographs. This book is definitely the best one of several books currently available on Santa Monica.

Editorial Review:

Spectacular settings and authentic style—forty new Hip Hotels will make your beach experience unique.

Glittering turquoise waters lapping onto pure white sand, sea birds riding the breeze ...give or take surf, the perfect beach is pretty much the same the world over. But that is certainly not true of the perfect beach hotel.

On the shores of six continents, each of these Hip Hotels expresses the uniqueness of its setting. Cable Beach Club in Broome, Western Australia, combines corrugated iron with oriental antiques and silks in an exquisite Asia-meets-Outback style—perfect in this quintessential Australian destination, the former pearl-diving capital of the world. On the volcanic island of Santorini, rising spectacularly from the Greek Aegean, the sparkling white domed cottages of Hotel Tsitouras cling to the cliffside, their interiors adorned with ancient amphorae, Byzantine icons, and antique porcelain from the owner's outstanding art collection. Off the shores of East Africa, the private atoll of Mnemba hosts a collection of luxuriously simple beach huts made from hand-woven palm matting traditional to neighboring Zanzibar. On Mexico's Pacific Coast, the luxury ecological reserve of Hotelito Desconocido invites you to witness the annual scramble of newly hatched sea turtles as they make their first intrepid journey to the ocean. And it's not all about Robinson Crusoe-style minimalism: the Shore Club in Miami's South Beach is a chic five-acre seafront complex, complete with gorgeous tropical gardens, Nobu restaurant, top-class boutiques, and A-list clientele.

So grab your sunscreen and your straw hat and join photographer Herbert Ypma in visiting the latest collection of Highly Individual Places. 500 illustrations, 350 in color.

Editorial Review:

Since World War II, tourists have flocked to Florida's northwest Gulf Coast and sun and fun spots at Panama City Beach, Fort Walton Beach, and Pensacola Beach. Every year those visitors number in the millions.

For those who long to recall how the vacationland appeared thirty, forty, or even fifty years ago, Tim Hollis has written Florida's Miracle Strip: From Redneck Riviera to Emerald Coast.

In a style that informs and entertains, Hollis describes the rise of early developments, such as Long Beach Resort, and major tourist attractions, such as the Gulfarium and the Miracle Strip Amusement Park. With heartfelt nostalgia and a dose of tongue-in-cheek, he reminisces on the motels and tourist cottages; the restaurants, such as Captain Anderson's and Staff's; the elaborate miniature golf courses, such as Goofy Golf and its many imitators. He takes a special delight in recovering the memories of those quirky businesses that now exist only in faded photographs and aging postcards, such wacky tourist traps as Castle Dracula, Petticoat Junction, Tombstone Territory, and the Snake-A-Torium.

In the book, Hollis examines how this area became known as the "Miracle Strip," and how the local chambers of commerce got so tired of that image that the name gradually fell into disuse. The book is illustrated with a profusion of vintage photos and advertisements, most of which have not been seen in print since their original appearances. For the nostalgia lover, the snowbird, the tourist seeking yesteryear, Florida's Miracle Strip: From Redneck Riviera to Emerald Coast will be a welcome traveling companion.

Tim Hollis is the author of Hi There, Boys and Girls! America's Local Children's TV Programs and Dixie Before Disney: 100 Years of Roadside Fun, both from University Press of Mississippi.

Editorial Review:

With its extravagant homes, sumptuous gardens, and iconic residents, Palm Beach radiates luxury and wealth. Tiffany's Palm Beach showcases roughly 70 of the area's wealthiest, most powerful, and, in some cases, most reclusive residents in and around their stylishly opulent homes and gardens. Highlighted are exquisite Tiffany objects and jewels, both antique and contemporary, wherever they appear. With unprecedented access into the jealously and heavily guarded retreats in this most exclusive of American resorts, this deluxe volume is a virtual who's who of Palm Beach society.

The text accompanying the book's lush photography provides historical context to the significance of these spectacular homes as well as the architects, interior designers, and garden designers that fashioned them. The ultimate luxury wish book, this collection is perfect for admirers of Tiffany style and of life at the top in America today. The publication of this book coincides with the reopening of the renovated Tiffany & Co. in Palm Beach, in November 2005.

weak book 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is one of the worst travel guide books I have ever purchased. It contains, long, wordy text with very little useful information. Don't buy this book.

A very helpful book overall. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this a few months before our trip to Myrtle Beach. It gave alot of vey helpful information, especially for someone who has never visited the East coast. Although I realize this was a guide, it would have been nice to have the photos in color. Also, be careful about the hours given in the book for area attractions. A few of them were off by at least an hour. Plus remember, there are millions of tourist guides once you reach the area, starting at the airport. They provide much of the same information as this book. However, if you like to get to know an area before you visit it, this is the book for you.

Editorial Review:

Known as one of the best vacation spots in the country, Myrtle Beach is a thriving hotspot that features more than just sand and sun:  fresh seafood, alligator parks, jeep tours, a NASCAR SpeedPark, colorful nightlife, and an expanding music scene are just some of things travelers will find on South Carolina's coast.

Editorial Review:

In the 1960s, the fishing village of Montauk became the surfer's paradise of the United States' East Coast. Located as the tip of Long Island's South Fork, the easternmost point of the Hamptons, this paradise existed primarily for locals - not surfers who migrated to the beach for the summer, but those who were out in the rocky reefs every day, year round. Today, a new tribe of surfers exists - a group of young locals who live by their own rules. Rule number 1: Never tell anyone where the good surf spots are. Rule number 2: See rule number 1. In the 1990s, photographer Michael Dweck rented a house on Ditch Plains beach (site of the best surf break) and struck up a friendship with one of the local surfers, eventually gaining uprecedented access to the insular local surf community. Dweck's photographic essay follows the surfers through their daily rituals, from early morning wave reports to evening bonfires on the beach, capturing their youthful hedonism. Through portraits, nudes, and photographs of the landscape, this book celebrates lives lived only to surf, and captures an endless summer of perfect weather and languorous beauty.

Beaches of the Big Island 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book displays black and white pictures and is totally outdated. Out of all the tour books on Hawaii that I ordered (Frommers 2000, Fodors 2000, Best Places to Stay in Hawaii and the guides books written by Andrew Doughty and Harriet Friedman, Lonely Planet) this was by far the worst. I should have returned it while I could but I wanted to give it a chance. What a waste of time and money.

Not Up-to-Date 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book in 1989 and used it then, and again, later in 1994. I now live on the Big Island and can tell you that this book is not up-to-date on the easily accessible beaches. There have been marked changes in the 4WD beaches, also. What was once my Beach Bible, is no longer useful. It WAS a great book.

Who says there's no good beaches on the Big Island? 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book which could benefit from being updated. With the focus on just beaches, it was extremely useful and I found many great beaches I wouldn't have found otherwise during my three week visit. If beachgoing is your thing, this book will help you find plenty, expecially non-resort ones that are virtually empty.

Editorial Review:

The Big Island's shoreline is remarkably diverse and dynamic and includes more than a hundred black, green, and white sand beaches.

Editorial Review:

Spend a summer with Peter Genovese as he chronicles a typical wild and wacky, kitschy and classy season along the New Jersey coastline.

Lifeguards, surfers, beachgoers, birders, ice cream vendors, seashell sellers, banner pilots-they're all here. You'll be on the scene when Atlantic City's mayor officially begins summer by "unlocking the ocean," get a whiff of the state barbeque championship, watch the nation's longest-running all-women lifeguard competition, and even spend a weekend, Survivor-style, on a Barnegat Bay island.

The Ocean City Baby Parade, Clownfest, the state's hottest bikini contest, and the World Series of Surf Fishing are all covered. You'll also meet the folks at the Diamondback Terrapin Conservation Project, the Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge, and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

Genovese introduces you to Little Miss Chaos and the King of Corn, the Jersey Shore Hot Dog Queen, and Lucky Leo. You'll go on patrol with the New Jersey State Marine Police, meet the man behind Big Mike's E-Z Bail Bonds, and find salvation at the Boardwalk Chapel.

The Jersey Shore Uncovered flawlessly depicts the timeless allure of New Jersey beach culture. Along with his stories, Genovese brings readers hundreds of color and black-and-white photos that brilliantly capture exactly what makes this 127-mile stretch of shoreline unique. Whether you've never been to a New Jersey beach or you're a Jersey native who spends your summers "down the Shore," you're certain to learn a thing or two from this book. So get settled in your beach chair, put on some suntan lotion, and enjoy.
