Beautiful Memories, beautiful book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I grew up in Miami Beach a bit later than the authors. When the book arrived I couldn't put it down. I loved the photos and historic reference; they showed just how special Miami Beach was. My only wish is that the authors would have expanded their history a bit.

Perhaps add info on Central Beach Elementary, Ida M Fisher Junior and Miami Beach High as well as some of the other early landmarks (the Post Office on Washington Avenue). I realize the authors wrote through their own families' experience, but there is so much more... and so many others who contributed so much to the city.

Hopefully one day they'll do another book to immortalize a truly "Magic City."

Editorial Review:

Miami Beach is the story of an extraordinary time and place, told through the prism of two founding families, the Wolfsons and the Okas. The authors' fathers were each mayors of Miami Beach, one in the 1940s and the other in the '50s and early '60s, and their mothers were prominent first ladies, who regularly welcomed the crème de la crème of society to their enchanting city. The Wolfsons' and Okas' exhaustive family archives provide a rich cultural, architectural, political, social, botanical, stylistic, gastronomic, geological, and poetic history of the contemporary phenomenon that is Miami Beach. At once an intimate memoir, a sprawling history, and a work of great artistic integrity, Miami Beach invites you to step back into a world so visual, mythical, and filled with family lore that its local intensity illuminates a national character.

Beach Book overlooks Great Lakes beaches! 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 33 people found this review helpful.

I am an expert on the Great Lakes, and was senior staff for 6 years for Great Lakes United, an international coalition that protects the Great Lakes. I think Dr. Leatherman's book is excellent except one great omission. HE TOTALLY LEAVES OUT THE GREAT LAKES! For those who dont live near them, yes, they have great beaches. The Great Lakes have 3800 miles of shoreline, longer than the entire U.S. Atlantic shoreline. 8-mile long Presque Isle Beach in Pennsylvania is used by millions of people a year. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, near Chicago, is nationally famous. Nottasawaga Beach in Ontario, Toronto's prime summer vacation district, is the longest freshwater beach in the world! NY, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ontario and Minnesota all have long, clean sandy beaches. And they have something ocean beaches DONT have: they are on freshwater (not salty). The Great Lakes are called the Sweetwater Seas, and they are the largest collection of lakes in the world (and contain 25% of the world's freshwater). If Mr. Leatherman wants to be fair and complete, he will expand his book to include Great Lakes beaches in the future edition.

Editorial Review:

This book is intended to pique your interest in exploring our nation's great beaches and to serve as a guide for beach lovers. Because people visit beaches for different reasons, I have included categories such as best swimming, walking, scenic, wilderness, city, sports, novelty, and surfing beaches. Not everyone has a ticket to Hawaii; therefore, the listings are regionalized so that you can find your place in the sun closer to home or while touring. I hope that this book will serve to enhance your pleasure in pursuit of the three S's - sun, surf, and sand.

Simply Outstanding! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you love Long Beach Island, and its elevation from barren sandbar to a coastal resort , then this book will have you in awe. Through photographic images and postcard views, you are actually transported to the edwardian beginnings and essentially every single step along the way to present day. Having grown up in Beach Haven, I thought i had already seen most of the available information. This book brought clarity to long held stories, solved some mysteries, and answered alot of questions. Kudos to Glenn Koch for assembling such a wonderful collecton of historical information and having the foresight to share this work with future generations.
I have purchased copies for everyone in my family for the holidays and i am sure they will be just as excited about this volume as i am.

Editorial Review:

Spend a summer with Peter Genovese as he chronicles a typical wild and wacky, kitschy and classy season along the New Jersey coastline.

Lifeguards, surfers, beachgoers, birders, ice cream vendors, seashell sellers, banner pilots-they're all here. You'll be on the scene when Atlantic City's mayor officially begins summer by "unlocking the ocean," get a whiff of the state barbeque championship, watch the nation's longest-running all-women lifeguard competition, and even spend a weekend, Survivor-style, on a Barnegat Bay island.

The Ocean City Baby Parade, Clownfest, the state's hottest bikini contest, and the World Series of Surf Fishing are all covered. You'll also meet the folks at the Diamondback Terrapin Conservation Project, the Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge, and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

Genovese introduces you to Little Miss Chaos and the King of Corn, the Jersey Shore Hot Dog Queen, and Lucky Leo. You'll go on patrol with the New Jersey State Marine Police, meet the man behind Big Mike's E-Z Bail Bonds, and find salvation at the Boardwalk Chapel.

The Jersey Shore Uncovered flawlessly depicts the timeless allure of New Jersey beach culture. Along with his stories, Genovese brings readers hundreds of color and black-and-white photos that brilliantly capture exactly what makes this 127-mile stretch of shoreline unique. Whether you've never been to a New Jersey beach or you're a Jersey native who spends your summers "down the Shore," you're certain to learn a thing or two from this book. So get settled in your beach chair, put on some suntan lotion, and enjoy.

Solid reference book with pictures! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a great reference book with lots of black and white pictures. We used it everyday on our 21 day production of "The Best Florida Beaches / Waves: Virtual Vacations" DVD here on Amazon. So after reading this book, if you want to really see and hear what these beaches truely looked like before the hurricanes, check out our DVD.

Florida surprisingly has some of the most diverse beaches. From the white clayish sand in Key West to the shelly beaches of Naples up to the spectacular white sands in the Panhandle back down the orange sand beaches of the Atlantic near jacksonville to the white sandy beaches to Miami. Add to that, spectacular yellow & orange sunsets and you'll have a wonderful trip.

Editorial Review:

This is a guide to the best beaches on the west coast and southern tip of the state. Detailed information on beach access and amenities is accompanied by the history of each beach and other fascinating tidbits of information.

Editorial Review:

Before the Bay Bridge made access to the Atlantic easier, the Chesapeake Bay was dotted with beach-type resorts. Located in Calvert County, Maryland, Chesapeake Beach and neighboring North Beach were two of the most popular. Chesapeake Beach, the resort, officially opened on June 9, 1900 when visitors from Washington, D.C., stepped from the coaches of a brand new railroad specifically built to transport them there. Likewise, steamboat service from Baltimore to the resort was inaugurated the same day. The resort's success fueled the rise of North Beach, and the two destinations were popular with Washington and Baltimore residents for many years to come. Here is the story of their halcyon days as summertime resorts of the bay. More than 230 vintage postcards and other memorabilia recall early, happy times there.

More than a Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

From the Mexican border to Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo county, this book delivers the goods on 170 beaches.

The directions are extremely clear, which is very important in both the chaos of LA and the unsigned rural coast of central Californa.

This book explores more than just beaches. If it's near the water or even under the water, it's in this book. Web addresses and phone numbers acompany the detailed info and descriptions.

But, the true beauty of this book are the essays. Extremely well-written insights into things like California weather, Sand, Kites, Surfing, SCUBA, Sailing, Tidal Pool, and more.

There's even an appendix with the average water temperatures in each of the book's 19 regions!

My only complaint is that they could have used some more indents and bold characters.

Well worth the price. I'm sure to need another copy after I wear this one out.
