As the required textbook for NAEMT's worldwide prehospital trauma life support courses, Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is the definitive resource for learning basic and advanced prehospital trauma skills and concepts. Now revised and expanded to cover all aspects of prehospital trauma - with new chapters on burns, wilderness trauma, tactical considerations, weapons of mass destruction, triage and disaster management, and environmental trauma - the 6th edition is the ultimate trauma text for any prehospital care provider! The 6th edition is also ideal for use as the trauma component of an EMT or paramedic course or as a general reference tool on trauma assessment and management. The Instructor's Resource Manual with CD-ROM is available for certified PHTLS instructors ONLY. It can be ordered through MosbyJems, but customers must first obtain an access code from the National PHTLS office at 1-800-94-PHTLS or 1-601-924-7744. Individuals may also call the above numbers for information on How to Become a PHTLS Instructor.

  • PHTLS is a continuing education program authored and administered by the PHTLS division of the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) in conjunction with the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.

  • Airway, Thoracic, and Spinal Skills are presented in a heavily illustrated, step-by-step format.
  • Scenarios and Scenarios Solutions are provided for every chapter to promote critical thinking and allow "real-world" application of the chapter.

  • More comprehensive, covering ALL aspects of prehospital trauma
  • More thoroughly referenced than ever with the most accurate, up-to-date, evidence-based information available
  • Information on Prolonged/Extended Transport added to all applicable chapters
  • Chapter on Burns provides an in-depth view of how to treat burn trauma patients.
  • A companion DVD-ROM (new format) shows full-screen video clips of all airway and spinal skills used in PHTLS. Skills are even subtitled in six languages! It also contains information - such as the Glasgow Coma Scale, Revised Trauma Score, Rule of Nines, Parkland Formula, and Pediatric Vital Signs - to download to your PDA.
  • Chapter on Triage and Disaster Management addresses the multiple casualty incident in detail, whether the incident is as small as 3-4 people to a disaster involving hundreds.
  • Chapter on Weapons of Mass Destruction explains how to correctly react at the scene of an incident involving biological, nuclear, incendiary, chemical, or explosive agents.
  • Chapter on Civilian Tactical EMS describes how prehospital providers can support police operations, promote crime scene awareness, and apply PHTLS concepts to civilian tactical settings.
  • Chapter on Wilderness Trauma Care describes treatment of trauma patients in wilderness situations, including information on extended transport times.
  • Two Environmental Trauma chapters offer more information on a wide variety of environmental emergency topics.

The Best Yet 5 out of 5 stars.

So many books try and explain ecg's in language that is understandable to the practicing RN but this is the only book I've found that is useful. I'm buying a new version to replace my very worn out one.

The best Fire Officer I and II book available. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After reviewing the two other books of this type available, this one is by far the best. The chapter on CRM is what makes this one heads and tails above the others. If you are thinking of buying this book to read, don't think about it anymore. Buy it!

A must have! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I am a third year medical student and just finished my Pediatrics rotation. I felt like this book hit the highlights of what was covered on the shelf exam. I wish that I would have started reading it sooner, but due to a rerouting problem I didn't get the book until about 2 weeks before the shelf exam. Like many medical books, it is not a quick read even when you have reviewed. This is not a learning book, but a review book. I used NMS as my primary source but used this to review. It does take quite awhile to get through, but the outer margins have valuable information for both clinical and testing uses. The important points are outlined in the margins and coded with symbols to let you know if it is a testing point or procedure point, etc. I though it was a valuable book though, but start it with some other primary source near the beginning of your rotation. Hope this helps!

Great Review Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book has great, relevant questions that are very similar to those on the EM Inservice Exam and on Boards. I highly recommend it.

outstanding 5 out of 5 stars.

This question book is extremely well written and useful for studying for the ABEM written exam or in-service exams. I highly recommend it.

dodgy product 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

sketchy at best, a fair amount of innacuracies, questions that belong on the IM boards, and questions very unlikely to be asked. Still there are obviously many hundred good questions...need to be careful though as some of their info is simply wrong!

Editorial Review:

This review book contains 1,000 questions that mimic the in-service residency exam and board exam in emergency medicine. Questions are divided into 10 tests of 100 questions each, and each test covers all areas of emergency medicine: internal medicine and surgery specialty areas, dentistry, trauma, obstetrics, pediatrics, toxicology, environmental medicine, radiology, dermatology, EMS, and bioterrorism. Questions are case-based and 10% involve interpreting an image. Answers are included, along with concise explanations of the correct and incorrect answer choices.

Editorial Review:

From murder/mystery to medical fiction - from trauma, mass casualties, or blunt trauma, surgeon and trauma expert Dr. David W. Page is a writer's best friend. Whether a writer's fictional character is a detective investigating a crime or a doctor racing down the hallways toward an emergency - it's a given that someone is hurt. Credible storytelling is the key to plausibility, and Dr. Page offers the perfect prescription.

Body Trauma explains what happens to body organs and bones maimed by accident or intent and the small window of opportunity for emergency treatment. Learn about what goes on in a hospital operating room and the personnel who initiate treatment. Use these facts and bring a new realism to stories and novels.

Here you'll find graphic explorations of serious bodily damage. You'll be able to work backward, deciding how severe a character's wounds should be and then writing the action that causes the pain. You'll put your characters in harm's way and mistreat them-believability-to within an inch of their fictional lives.

Pretty good book.. 3 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

The book (and others in the series I have used) is quite good, with clear, well-summarized material. There are a few caveats, however:
1. In this 1st edition, there are many typos. Most are obvious (mispelling, repeating a word or phrase or phrase twice in a row, etc.), but betray a lack of proofreading. I THINK all the important information is accurate, but the typos don't inspire confidence...
2. The font size is big, the line spacing generous, and there's lots of white space on the pages, which makes for easy reading, but as a result it's not a small book. It would be nice if some of the font sizing/line spacing were sacrificed for a more pocketable book that might fit in a white coat, like the "Recall" series. (The "Recall" series has its hits and misses, but Surgical Recall is a must-have book for the surgery rotation. Really. It goes very well with First Aid or the similar "Blueprints.")
3. The "Blueprints" series is very similar to this "First Aid" series, with the addition of a test prep. question/answer section in the back. It would be nice if First Aid had SOME sort of review mechanism--maybe Q/A's at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book.

Overall, it's a good series, even with my "gripes."
