Editorial Review:

Bizarre illnesses and plagues that kill people in the most unspeakable ways. Obsessive and inspired efforts by scientists to solve mysteries and save lives. From The Hot Zone to The Demon in the Freezer and beyond, Richard Preston’s bestselling works have mesmerized readers everywhere by showing them strange worlds of nature they never dreamed of.

Panic in Level 4 is a grand tour through the eerie and unforgettable universe of Richard Preston, filled with incredible characters and mysteries that refuse to leave one’s mind. Here are dramatic true stories from this acclaimed and award-winning author, including:

• The phenomenon of “self-cannibals,” who suffer from a rare genetic condition caused by one wrong letter in their DNA that forces them to compulsively chew their own flesh–and why everyone may have a touch of this disease.
• The search for the unknown host of Ebola virus, an organism hidden somewhere in African rain forests, where the disease finds its way into the human species, causing outbreaks of unparalleled horror.
• The brilliant Russian brothers–“one mathematician divided between two bodies”–who built a supercomputer in their apartment from mail-order parts in an attempt to find hidden order in the number pi (π).

In fascinating, intimate, and exhilarating detail, Richard Preston portrays the frightening forces and constructive discoveries that are currently roiling and reordering our world, once again proving himself a master of the nonfiction narrative and, as noted in The Washington Post, “a science writer with an uncommon gift for turning complex biology into riveting page-turners.”

Editorial Review:

Twenty–five years in the ER could become a resume for despair, but for Dr. Robert D. Lesslie it’s a foundation for inspiring tales of angels who are friends, nurses, doctors, patients, strangers, or those unseen but clearly present “others” in the midst of trial.

“The ER is a difficult and challenging place to be. Yet the same pressures and stresses that make this place so challenging also provide an opportunity to experience some of life’s greatest wonders and mysteries.” Dr. Lesslie illuminates messages of hope while sharing captivating stories about:

  • discovering lessons from the ER frontline
  • watching miracles unfold
  • witnessing the handiwork of angels
  • holding onto faith during tragedy and triumph
  • embracing the healing balm of hope

For anyone who enjoys stories of the miraculous, this gathering is a reminder that hope turns emergencies into opportunities and each trial into a demonstration of God’s grace.

Both halves of recovery 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Drew transcends the glib advice given by many in pop-psychology culture with a profound yet down to Earth wisdom about the human condition. This is his story about the interaction of codependency and addiction in treatment. His understanding of both topics is deep, and he expresses it with great clarity. Drew writes about his own struggle with codependency:

"[Childhood] Traumas ... leave imprints on parts of the brain that don't have a sense of time. The memory gives the sense that the trauma is always happening. As a result, I grew up with a feeling that there's a catastrophe waiting around every corner. I can't remember a time when I have not felt anxious. My response has been to try to control everything and everyone. I am a perfectionist. I rescue people. I have to make sure no one else gets carted away....

"Of course it's unreal to think I should be able to save everyone or that everyone should listen to me or both. How dare I insist all my patients cooperate with my need to rescue? But thats exactly what did."

Through his decades of treating addiction, Drew explains what he has learned about society and mental health. From the book:

"If I get angry it's at the bigger picture. In general, our culture offers us solutions that inly intensify our problems. I'm prone to rant about this, I know -- but after all, surgeons are permitted to rage against cigarettes and fatty foods, psychologists about poor communication skills. So why shouldn't I go off on the culture? ....

"To me, mental health isn't always about feeling good. Nor is it always about avoiding depression. Nor is it about being happy. As I define it, mental health is about accepting reality on reality's terms."

I highly recommended this book not only for people in recovery, but for anyone interested in mental health.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Drew Pinsky is best known as the cohost of the long-running radio advice program Loveline. But his workday is spent at a major Southern California clinic, treating the severest cases of drug dependency and psychiatric breakdown. In this riveting book, Pinsky reveals the intimate and often shocking stories of his patients as they struggle with emotional trauma, sexual abuse, and a host of chemical nemeses: alcohol, marijuana, Ecstasy, heroin, speed, cocaine, and prescription drugs. At the center of these stories is Pinsky himself, who immerses himself passionately, almost obsessively, in his work. From the sexually compulsive model to the BMW-driving soccer mom, Cracked exposes, in fast-moving, powerful vignettes, the true scope and severity of addiction, a nationwide epidemic.

I work in a unit that is monitored. I am glad I got this to help me measure and interpret. I feel it is a good tool and resource. It is not as durable as I had hoped. It gets scratched in my bag but it is still usable.

GREAT PRACTICE 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I've worked with Dr. Amal Mattu in the ER here at University of Maryland, and let me tell you his EKG rounds are always excellent learning experiences be they at 2AM or noon. The same can be said of the book. As a resident in Internal Medicine I always want to look at more EKGs and this book is aimed at the professional who wants to see good examples of the common EKG findings, and also the rarer things such as Brugada syndrome. Each EKG is paired with a short vignette and the answers are in the back.

ECGs for anyone serious about ECGs 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Over the last few years, I've looked at quite a few references about ECGs. Mattu's book is certainly one of a kind. Split into two sections, each with 100 12-leads, the text begins subtly and works towards increasing difficulty and complexity of the strips. Each strip includes but a single description of the patient e.g. "46 year old male complaining of left chest pressure." The reader can then form his own impression of the patient's condition, and then refer to the end matter for a detailed explanation of the actual diagnosis.

This is certainly a teaching book. In many cases, I found myself formulating a diagnosis only to read in the back, "This is commonly misdiagnosed as [my guess]" or "This can easily be mistaken for [also my guess.]"

Initially, I was not quite confident text was worth the trouble. It does, after all, simply present strip after strip, with commentary in the back. But the text is structured in such a way that the reader can build upon knowledge and apply past failures at diagnosis to each new strip. I found myself making fewer and fewer elemental mistakes and developing a more complete picture of differential diagnosis as I progressed through the book.

Purely in terms of it's presentation of uncommon variants to common rhythms, the text is well worth the price. I'm not an emergency physician. My interest is EMS and prehospital care. Regardless, I found great utility in this text.

Editorial Review:

A practical learning book on the interpretation of ECGs for emergency physicians and staff. This will contain many examples of ECGs, randomly presented, each with a short history, and learning points. Two levels of difficulty make it useful at the basic and more senior levels. Three appendices will contain essential information aimed specially at emergency staff.

Handy book 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book to back me up in my clinical year instead of carrying the big and great Tintinalli's "Emergency Med." I think this little version does a good job in giving a concise information on emergency medicine.

Great Tool for a ER rotation 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

So far, the Emergency Medicine Manual has been a great asset to have while doing my ER rotation. It fits conveniently into my coat pocket and after seeing a patient, I can quickly read up on whatever I suspect is main diagnosis, and therefore appear smart when I am being pimped by a resident or an attending. I would recommend it to anyone considering doing ER.

Good for rounds 4 out of 5 stars.

Great resource to have when making rounds. Didn't seem as indepth as I would like it to be in some places. Good refresher kind of book, with other resources handy for more indepth information.

Great book! 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Great book!. Easy to read and understand. Great source for studying for your CEN exam. Nicely organized. Answer and rationale next to each question.

Pretty fair review 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This was the most recently published review book I found. It includes an excellent CD with 400+ additional questions, although there were some redundant ones from the book.

My only complaint with the book is the format. Each question has the correct answer with the rationale right next to it on the same page, which makes it difficult to read the question, work through it in you head, and answer it without seeing the correct answer first, which made it hard for me to study. Even if the correct answer was below each question, that would be easier on my eyes than having to rush to cover half the page before reading each question...

All in all, I passed the test on the first try, which is as good a recommendation I can give any book. It did it's job!

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive workbook is an indispensable aid for emergency room nurses preparing for the CEN exam. The book contains over 1,400 questions and answers in an easy-to-use two-column format--questions in the left column, correct answers and rationales in the right. A bound-in CD-ROM contains over 300 additional questions. Coverage encompasses all subject areas in the CEN exam blueprint, and includes 5-tier triage, ECG strips, long-term complications of ED care, disaster management, and recognition and emergency management of chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction. The book includes sample tests with 175 questions, weighted according to the CEN exam blueprint.

Excellent for ConCert in EM 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I used this review book to study for my recert exam (ConCert) on Nov 3'07. I went back to the book immediately after the exam and found ~95% or more of the answers to the questions that were on the exam. If you are worried about detail - use tintinalli (and take a year to prepare!)This review book does not get into great detail, but neither did the exam! Most info is upto date (except recommend cipro for GC and no mention of MRSA). If you give yourself 2 months, you can easily cover the 600+ pages. there are no questions and no pics/stimulus type items. I would highly recommend this review book for the recertifying exam, and have so to the other attendings in my ED. i don't think i would recommend this to residents.

EASILY the best ER handbook 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Arranged by chief complaint, with instant access to the most pertinent information on workup and treatment.

There really is no comparable book in existence. I saw a recent review comparing it to 'Pocket Medicine'? There's no comparison. If you have a patient with chest pain, this book puts all the possible diagnoses in one section with the labs/imaging/physical exam tips that you need to decide which one is most likely...followed by the treatment. With 'Pocket Medicine' you'd have to jump from ACS, to PE, to esophageal spasm, to AAA, to tamponade, and on and on. You better not forget any possible causes because it's not arranged by complaint but by body system (like all internal medicine guides)

I had to write a review because I don't want medical students, interns, or residents thinking the 'Pocket Medicine' will help you in the ER.

'Pocket Medicine' is for internists or your internal medicine rotations.

'Pocket Emergency Medicine' is the ONLY handbook to carry in the ER.

Editorial Review:

This handy pocket-sized looseleaf reference contains the essential information that residents and medical students in the emergency department need to have at their fingertips. The first section covers 57 chief complaints in alphabetical order; other sections cover trauma, pediatric emergencies, environmental exposures, and airway management. Information is presented in concise, rapid-access format, with easy-to-scan bulleted lists and tables. Chapters follow a standard structure--history, classic findings, critical studies, ED interventions, pearls, and references. The six-ring binder can accommodate the student's or resident's own notes. Pocket Emergency Medicine is also available electronically for handheld computers. See Media Products section for details.
