good for step 1 prep 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This is not bad as another book to have for Step1 Prep. Don't overwhelm yourself with too many books because there are ALOT of books out there. Just pick a handful becuase otherwise you will have conflicting information.

Too many mistakes, subpar to UCV 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book after I read all 8 UCV (Undeground Clinical Vignettes) from the same authors. I was able to compare them. Obviously it has fewer cases, most of them are identical. FA team rushed this book in production and as a result there are lots of mistakes and really inconvinient layout. My only recommendation is to buy a cheaper previous edition of UCV books (ISBN 0632045590).

Editorial Review:

For more than two decades, hospice nurse Maggie Callanan has tended to the terminally ill and been a cornerstone of support for their loved ones. Now the coauthor of the classic bestseller Final Gifts passes along the lessons she has learned from the experts—her patients. Here is the guide we all need to understanding the special needs of the dying and those who care for them.

In her work with thousands of families, Maggie Callanan has witnessed the tears, the love—and the confusion and conflict—this final passage can evoke. Now, with honesty, compassion, and even humor, she empowers patients and their families to write the last chapter of their lives with less fear, less pain, and more control—so that all involved can focus their energies on creating the best possible ending.

From supporting a husband or wife faced with the loss of a spouse, to helping a dying mother prepare her children to carry on without her, Callanan’s poignant stories illustrate new ways to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges of this difficult and precious time. She brings welcome clarity to medical and ethical concerns, explaining what to expect at every stage. Each brief chapter also conveys a home truth about making crucial treatment decisions, supporting the patient’s dignity and individuality, and lightening the burden on caregivers.

Final Journeys is designed to be your companion, resource, and advocate. From diagnosis through the final hours, it will help you keep the lines of communication open, get the help you need, and create the peaceful end we all hope for.

Muddy's Coffeehouse in Eliz. City 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Incredible! I am a frequent patron of Muddy Water's Coffeehouse in E. City, N.C. and I have no connection to the Coast Guard. I frequently run into these guys, mostly the kids in the swimmer training program, on Saturdays when they come in to get coffee and study their training material, or e-mail their wives and girlfriends. They are perennially polite and completely pumped up about the program. I have always had lots of interest in learning about what they do. Then came The Guardian. After seeing that, I had more respect for these swimmers than I have for any of the other "Special Forces." (I realize they are not classified as such, but perhaps they should be.) I bought the book to learn more and learn I did. It is unfathomable to me that these young men and women will take the risks they do to save others' lives, particularly when, in many of these cases, people made stupid mistakes to be out on the seas in the first place. I read the book thinking, Yeah, So Others May Live to make some more stupid mistakes another day.

As a writer myself, I thought the book was incredibly well-done. The characterization of these guys as capable, yet humble, rang so true. The story-driven chapters were gripping. I read far too late into the night too many nights in a row. Martha, you owe me some sleep. And, Swimmers, the rest of us owe you and your "teammates" nothing but the utmost respect.

A P.S. to Ms. LaGuardia-Kotite: Your epilogue on "rescuing the rescuers"
answered the burning question I had - what do these guys do with the horrors they have seen and they stress they have borne?

Editorial Review:

So Others May Live is the untold story of the U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer. In startlingly clear and exceptional writing, it tells twelve heroic stories of the greatest maritime rescues attempted since the program was started in 1985. These feats, told through the eyes of the hero, reveal an understanding of how and why the rescuer, with flight crew assistance, risks his or her own life to reach out to save a stranger. The book covers diverse environments: oceans, hurricanes, oil rigs, caves, sinking vessels, floods, and even Niagara Falls. It is truly a can't-put-it-down collection.

GREAT PRACTICE 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I've worked with Dr. Amal Mattu in the ER here at University of Maryland, and let me tell you his EKG rounds are always excellent learning experiences be they at 2AM or noon. The same can be said of the book. As a resident in Internal Medicine I always want to look at more EKGs and this book is aimed at the professional who wants to see good examples of the common EKG findings, and also the rarer things such as Brugada syndrome. Each EKG is paired with a short vignette and the answers are in the back.

Editorial Review:

A collection of 200 high quality ECGs (Electrocardiogram's) that cover the entire spectrum of emergency electrocardiography. The first half of the book represents an intermediate level of difficulty and is ideal for residents in training and for the emergency medicine board review. The second half contains more advanced ECGs and will challenge even the most seasoned emergency medicine practitioner. When taken in its entirety, the book contains one of the best collections of ECGs ever assembled, targeted at advancing the ECG interpretation skills of emergency physicians and other acute health care providers.

Editorial Review:

Everyone knows of the Hippocratic Oath, the famous invocation sworn by all neophyte physicians. But most don't realize that the father of modern medicine was an avid listener and a constant bedside presence. Hippocrates believed in the doctor-patient connection and gained worldwide renown for championing science over mysticism while respecting and advocating the potency of human healing. Today, argues Dr. David H. Newman, medicine focuses narrowly on the rewards of technology and science, exaggerating their benefits and ignoring or minimizing their perils. Dr. Newman sees a disconnect between doctor and patient, a disregard for the healing power of the bond, and, ultimately, a disconnect between doctors and their Oath.

The root of this divergence, writes Dr. Newman, lies in the patterns of secrecy and habit that characterize the "House of Medicine," modern medicine's entrenched and carefully protected subculture. In reflexive, often unconscious defense of this subculture, doctors and patients guard medical authority, cling to tradition, and yield to demands that they do something or prescribe something. The result is a biomedical culture that routinely engages in unnecessary and inefficient practices, and leaves both patient and doctor dissatisfied. While demonstrating an abiding respect for, and a deep understanding of, the import of modern science, Dr. Newman reviews research that refutes common and accepted medical wisdom. He cites studies that show how mammograms may cause more harm than good; why antibiotics for sore throats are virtually always unnecessary and therefore dangerous; how cough syrup is rarely more effective than a sugar pill; the power and paradox of the placebo effect; how statistics and studies themselves are frequently deceptive; and why CPR is violent, invasive -- and almost always futile.

Through an engaging, deeply researched, and eloquent narrative laced with rich and riveting case studies, Newman cuts to the heart of what really works -- and doesn't -- in medicine and rebuilds the bridge between physicians and their patients.

I used to have this with me everywhere i went. Useful for all pediatrics. Probably the best mini-pocket pedi book. You can put it in the chest pocket. Let a student who wanted to go into ER borrow it. Neve got it back. Bas-tard!

I had to reference this book the next day after I got it, for a pediatric traums. Easy to read. Just need bigger print, or bifocals whichever works!

At <$20, priceless... 5 out of 5 stars.

Even if you carry a PDA, this little pocket sized wonder will eventually come in handy. Batteries don't last forever, and more than a few times I've had to drag out my Tarascon when someone else's PDA was DOA.

Fast, accurate, great bang for your buck. 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a huge fan of all the Tarascon pocket books, and this one is no exception. While it's not comprehensive by any means, and you still need a hariette lane or other such coat-pocket reference, having this in addition will help you sail through the pediatric clerkship. You can find all kinds of emergent, urgent, and even mundane daily info in here, such as how many kcals/kg/day to feed a baby, how to replace fluids, what to do for DKA, basic bugs and drugs, and a zillion other super-important topics. It's well referenced and up to date, worth every penny and more.

Fire Fighter I & II (Exam Prep) (Exam Prep (Jones & Bartlett Publishers)) 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I recently bought this book to prepare myself for the Florida State Fire fighter equivalency written exam. I have to say it was helpful in, helping me find my weaknesses, but very few questions that were on my exam were in this book. It has been 7 years since I had went through fire school, so I had forgot alot. Overall, the book did help, and I would recommend it to anyone who needs to find their weaknesses. The book has great references for a number of books, so you can look up the questions you get wrong and review the parts you are weak in.

exelent prep tool 5 out of 5 stars.

Very well researched. I have given this book to several of my trainees to help them prepare for the state FF I & II test. They have all come back stating that this book was the most help they had in preparation. Some questions on the state test were word for word out of the book

Editorial Review:

This guide follows Performance Training Systems, Inc.'s Systematic Approach to Examination Preparation, which teaches test-taking strategies and includes the same type of multiple-choice questions you are likely to encounter on the actual exam.

A First Aid book written by those who know 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent first aid book, particulairly for someone like me who only has basic first aid training. It was written by the American College of Emergency Physicians, so you know that it is truly definitive on the issue of first aid. The book is comprehensive, yet easy to use and color coded. The major benefits of the book include hundreds of photos, so that you are not simply told what to do, but shown. Another benefit is that it outlines how to handle various emergency situations, and how to exactly assist EMS when they arrive. It also tells you what you should treat and when you should call 911. A negative on the book is that it often refers you to other sections of the book during emergency procedures, something that there probably isn't time for in a real emergency. However, that should encourage your to become familiar with procedures before they happen. Overall, it is an easy to use first aid manual with lots of pictures that can help you to "[treat] emergency victims of all ages in any situation."

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive guide to treating emergency victims of all ages in any situation. The American College of Emergency Physicians in association with Dorling Kindersley Publishing, has created an essential and comprehensive first aid manual. The treatments and techniques are explained in step-by-step format and illustrated with hundreds of photographs showing exactly how to perform them correctly. A 32-page emergency section at the end of the book sums up the most important life-saving procedures, including rescue breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, treatment for a blocked airway, and other life-threatening situations. Illustrated anatomical sections explain the key concepts underlying first-aid techniques.

Great book! 4 out of 5 stars.

Great book!. Easy to read and understand. Great source for studying for your CEN exam. Nicely organized. Answer and rationale next to each question.

Pretty fair review 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This was the most recently published review book I found. It includes an excellent CD with 400+ additional questions, although there were some redundant ones from the book.

My only complaint with the book is the format. Each question has the correct answer with the rationale right next to it on the same page, which makes it difficult to read the question, work through it in you head, and answer it without seeing the correct answer first, which made it hard for me to study. Even if the correct answer was below each question, that would be easier on my eyes than having to rush to cover half the page before reading each question...

All in all, I passed the test on the first try, which is as good a recommendation I can give any book. It did it's job!

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive workbook is an indispensable aid for emergency room nurses preparing for the CEN exam. The book contains over 1,400 questions and answers in an easy-to-use two-column format--questions in the left column, correct answers and rationales in the right. A bound-in CD-ROM contains over 300 additional questions. Coverage encompasses all subject areas in the CEN exam blueprint, and includes 5-tier triage, ECG strips, long-term complications of ED care, disaster management, and recognition and emergency management of chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction. The book includes sample tests with 175 questions, weighted according to the CEN exam blueprint.

ED Veteran Review Manual 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is great for the verteran ED nurse with outline coverage of pertinent topics. But, if you're new to the ED, be aware that this book doesn't offer in-depth explanations.

Core content for Emergency Nurses 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I would consider this the "Bible" of Emergency Nursing. It is respectable in that it is written and published by the ENA (Emergency Nurses Association). It has DOZENS of contributing authors from many different clinical/specialty backgrounds of Emergency Nursing.

This book looks at the "core" knowledge base of Emergency Nurses and puts it in one place. While it's not a "casual" read, it is thorought. It's not written like some of those difficult "outline" books - there are actually paragraphs devoted to each topic. The index is pretty good also so you can look up specific references in the main text.

It is a bit big and heavy. Probably not the best to carry in your work bag, but definitely worthy of taking up the needed space on your desk.

Of course all the "traditional" content is here: cardiac, respiratory, neurology etc. Then there are more specific sections such as: Professionalism, Toxicology, Distasters, Substance Abuse, Sexual Assault and Forensics.

One of the BEST things about this book (besides it being FRESH off the press as of Summer 2007) is that it was written FOR Emergency Nurses BY Emergency Nurses - people who are actively involved in Emergency Nursing care.

Many of the listed authors and contributors I am familiar with via my dealings with the ENA and I can speak to these people's authority on their given topics.

Finally, this book is so comprehensive that I have used it as my main outline when I wrote and developed my own 2-Day CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) exam review course. I believe this manual (in addition to others I used) gives the most comprehensive view/curriculum/core content for Emergency Nurses and thus it is my "Bible" as well for the CEN classes I teach. [...]

Editorial Review:

The revised and updated edition of this core curriculum guides emergency nurses through all the clinical, professional, legal, educational, and research-related issues that affect their work. All content has been revised for accuracy and currency and the organization of material parallels the new blueprint for the CEN exam. The fifth edition also features new coverage of pain management, triage classification, long term complications of ED care, rationales for major interventions, and the pathophysiology of major illnesses and injuries. New illustrations make the material easier to understand and remember.
