It's the only choice 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the textbook that all EMT-B classes use, it's really the only choice you have. I found the companion study guide very helpful for studying. The 9th edition includes a CD and the on-line resources were great too. I especially like the chapter on Terrorist response, rather interesting comment about society and the times we live in.

Editorial Review:

For nearly 35 years, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has been a driving force in the field of EMS education, first by publishing Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured. Now, the Ninth Edition continues that dedication and commitment to training future EMT-Basics and the instructors who are paving their way.

Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, Ninth Edition is the center of an integrated teaching and learning system that will help define the future direction of EMS education. It combines comprehensive medical content with dynamic new features and interactive technology to better support instructors and to help prepare students for the field.

An interactive skills DVD is packaged free with each copy of the text.

The Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It is indispensable for every neurosurgeon. Provides quick and essential information about virtually all matter. Despite it is a handbook it carry even more information than some text books. I wish a PDA version so I will could carry away in my pocket.

Editorial Review:

Thieme is delighted to announce publication of the definitive guide for neurosurgical residents: Handbook of Neurosurgery, 5th Edition. Now back in one convenient volume, this book remains the most comprehensive guide to neurosurgery available today. The book is packed with nearly 1,000 pages of "nuts and bolts" information and guidelines spanning the breadth of neurosurgery-in a pocket-sized format that allows quick access to the answers you need. As in the previous bestselling editions, the book contains thousands of literature citations, a thorough index, and helpful cross-references for ease of use. The surgical material has been removed from this edition to facilitate its use with Fundamentals of Operative Neurosurgery by Connolly et al.

Excellent book for seasoned nurses to have as a reference or for a new nurse just starting in the neonatal unit. Comprehensive, well organized, easy to read and understand; photos, diagrams very helpful. Well worth the investment!

Great for New NICU Nurses 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Having been in adult nursing for a few years and later changing my career path towards pediatrics... this was the first book I purchased in preparation for the NICU. It contains excellent material for either learning or brushing up on your neonatal education. Matter of fact, this exact book is used as a reference book in the NICU where I work. =)

Too Complicated 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is too difficult to understand. The book says it is a resource for nurses but it talks about how to insert a central catheter and calculating fluid/electrolyte/glucose rquirements which I will not use. It is full of complex formulas and charts that take up entire pages. It is also full of hundreds of statistics that are boring and a waste of my time to read. I was looking for something that starts out more basic and is easier to read. This book is more geared towards physicians or experienced nurses but not new grads starting out in the NICU like myself. Someone reading this book will need an introduction to basic neonatology before they can understand this book.

Make It So 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Mark Brown has collected ER stories from folks around the country. During my first ER clinical I pulled the legs apart on a woman with a broken hip so that a catheter might be inserted, I listened to the ER head med complain that it was Saturday morning and you did not start the day with an MI, I listened to the PA joke about a patient with "fibro-myassia", and I watched the chief doc stonewall a patient because the patient seemed to think that his (the patient's) pain was all that mattered. No one ever died from pain, he said. Okay, think about it.

Mark Brown would not have used one of my stories in his book. What he writes about is more outstanding. ER is the sadly tragic interspersed with the joyful or lovely. A vagabond who insists that she once attended Julliard returns with her violin and plays four hours of glorious music without repeting a note. On another night in another town, ER gets to deal with an unconscious male who had been playing sex games with his bound wife. When the husband knocked himself out, all the bound wife could do is hollar until the firemen broke in.

I can hear Captain Picard from Star Trek issuing the command to "Make it so." Gosh, I wish that the ER was the place to make it so. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's the ER staff that survives.

Editorial Review:

* A suicide attempt by an "explosive" young man...
* The "hidden secrets" of a grotesquely obese patient...
* A couple whose amorous acrobatics get out of hand...
* A child brought back from the dead...

Bristling with the raw power of reality, this riveting book recounts true tales of life and death from the emergency rooms of America. Dr. Mark Brown asked over 15,000 fellow ER staffers to share their most unforgettable moments. Now, in their own voices, these real ER personnel bring us their most poignant, heartbreaking, laugh-out-loud hilarious, or shocking moments from the war zone of medicine. Discover the manic antics and incredible skills of ER doctors when a girlfriend's smooch nearly becomes a kiss of death...a farmer's severed foot hitches a ride to the hospital...a premature baby fights valiantly for life...and all of the unforgettable cases that come through the swinging doors of the emergency room.

A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.

This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.

This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

Editorial Review:

Practical and easily accessible manual on the basic and advanced management of the neonate. Covers procedures, disorders, and neonatal pharmacology in a logical outline approach that highlights the essentials of each procedure. The popular On Call Problems section presents over 30 common and serious patient problems. The Fifth Edition has been extensively revised and updated with new strategies for management of specific newborn respiratory diseases, updated information on the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, and updated drug information.

Handy book 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book to back me up in my clinical year instead of carrying the big and great Tintinalli's "Emergency Med." I think this little version does a good job in giving a concise information on emergency medicine.

Great Tool for a ER rotation 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

So far, the Emergency Medicine Manual has been a great asset to have while doing my ER rotation. It fits conveniently into my coat pocket and after seeing a patient, I can quickly read up on whatever I suspect is main diagnosis, and therefore appear smart when I am being pimped by a resident or an attending. I would recommend it to anyone considering doing ER.

Good for rounds 4 out of 5 stars.

Great resource to have when making rounds. Didn't seem as indepth as I would like it to be in some places. Good refresher kind of book, with other resources handy for more indepth information.

Editorial Review:

The best-selling pocket reference in emergency medicine! Condenses the essential clinical content from the premier text Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide. Includes color photos of dermatologic and ophthalmic conditions, pharmacologic considerations throughout, and tables of critical differential diagnoses.

The purchase was a gift to my daughter. I know she has not had time to put it to good use but from what I understand the book is a great reference for anyone in the medical field. She was quite pleased to have received.

It's the best critical care quick reference available. 5 out of 5 stars.

What can I say? The other reviewers have said it all. Anything that I wrote would be simply reiterating what has already been said. This book is thorough, concise, easy to read and reference, and covers all the body systems pertinent to critical care interventions. It should be considered a mandatory addition to any serious critical care nurse's library.

Excellent for ConCert in EM 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I used this review book to study for my recert exam (ConCert) on Nov 3'07. I went back to the book immediately after the exam and found ~95% or more of the answers to the questions that were on the exam. If you are worried about detail - use tintinalli (and take a year to prepare!)This review book does not get into great detail, but neither did the exam! Most info is upto date (except recommend cipro for GC and no mention of MRSA). If you give yourself 2 months, you can easily cover the 600+ pages. there are no questions and no pics/stimulus type items. I would highly recommend this review book for the recertifying exam, and have so to the other attendings in my ED. i don't think i would recommend this to residents.
