this book was very, very easy to follow. I started making my own candles the same afternoon. I found the photos to be very inspirational.

A great idea book 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thought that this book was extremely useful towards experienced candlemakers in search of new ideas. Though I think the instructions were a little foggy. One has to have a pretty good idea as to how to subtitute thier own materials in leau of what was presented in the book. I think that it is a great book to have around on those rainy days one is starting to find thier old techniques a little on the dull side.

Editorial Review:

Master the basic techniques and discover a whole world of creative candlemaking as this guide reveals how to make dipped, molded, and novelty candles. Projects included range from simple twisted, one-color, and perfumed candles to candles with embellished surfaces.

Horrible Book! 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 15 people found this review helpful.

UGH!! Can't believe I spent my $$ on this book! Cheesy, single side pages, one basic recipe for soap, no help on selling my stuff, WASTE OF $$ AND TIME!!!!

Truly appalling 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Dangerous recipes - well, one recipe with a multitude of minor variations, dangerous instructions. Total lack of proof-reading. The only good use for this book is as an emergency substitute for toilet paper.

Editorial Review:

Learn how to make soap the old fashioned way using new fangled methods. Making Soap for Fun and Profit offers basic recipes using tallow, vegetable shortening and/or a wide variety of oils such as olive, coconut, avacodo etc.. to make soap which lasts like our ancestors.

The author describes how to incorporate addivitives, herbs and essential oils to vary the color and scent of the soap.

The author encourages the reader to design and create special blends - offering some blank pages for personal notes and recipes.

Resources for materials appear through out the book and are also listed in the Index and resource page. Enjoy the process - have some fun making soap!

Catherine has shared a wealth of information. Thank you 5 out of 5 stars.
69 of 74 people found this review helpful.

I have never made soap but wanted to try. I read several books and this was definitely the clearest and easiest to follow. I am thrilled with the results of the very first batch and I am inspired to keep doing more. Thank you so much, Catherine, for sharing all this information.

For the serious soap maker 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is VERY detailed for the person who is going to get into serious soapmaking, supplies, ingredients and all. It provides all the information and illustration you'd need. Personally, I was looking for more of a hobbiest Melt & Pour kind of thing and I couldn't tell by the synopsis on the Amazon page whether or not this was. (it's not...) HOWEVER - I kept the book because it has excellent descriptions of ingredients for ANY soapmaker. It also has a super section on suppliers. That alone is worth the price as, again, whether a serious or hobbiest soap maker, you'll need soap supplies. Catherine Failor obviously knows soap and educates you with this detailed guide.

How Natural is "natural?" 3 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because the title sounds like what I am looking for. I wanted to make transparent soap and I want it to be as "natural" as possible. I like the clear , concise explanations. It is very well-written book, obviously indicating that the author knows what she is talking about. I was especially pleased with the diagrams of the cutter and the drill holder. Her instructions are easy to follow and recipes are plentiful. She even includes how to blend the essential oils for different scents. All beginners like me can use this information.

The one way in which this book did not live up to my expectations was with the "natural" part. I expected to find out how to make transparent soap using the old fashioned non-alcoholic method. While Catherine Failor mentions why she does not use that method, I was, nontheless, disappointed. I expected natural not to include alcohol, dyes, or synthetic preservatives.

I do not recommend this book if one is truly looking for the "natural" method of making transparent soap.

New gel ideas 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I gave this book a five stars because of the idea/pics included. It starts out talking about safety, tools needed, and working with gel. It address containers,bubbles,coloring/ fragrances, adding glitter, nesting the candle in a water/flower arrangement, using embeds( wax, clay, glass, agates, beads, wire, sea glass, pins), selecting wicks, making cameos for embeds(very original),using gold leaf inside candles, silhouette candles, color swirling, and gel floating candles.

There are ideas about: sand/treasure candle, neat spider web candle, using flower pot holders, amethyst stone look, using vases in another vase,HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN GUMBALL MACHINE CANDLE(very original at very low cost),vertical striped or diagonal candles, desert candles, pizza candle, tuxedo candle, glass painted/clear candle, bamboo candle, and bonsai(handmade)in a candle. Even shows candle ideas for men!

Each idea comes with pics, instructions, materials list. Great pics and ideas for the beginner and the pro.

Editorial Review:

New gel candlemakers get a friendly greeting to the craft with plenty of basic projects and helpful tips on technique; as they gain more experience, more detailed and exquisite items await their imaginative touch. Add glitter, insets, fragrance, and layers of color—even vertical ones. Among the awe-inspiring projects: a polymer clay spider “weaving” its web in stylish clear gel; a patriotic Stars & Stripes design; and even a Gumball Machine candle.

To each their own... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Ah, I see much criticism of this lovely book -- folks want something new and exciting. This book clearly isn't an information about soapmaking book -- it is actually a bit more and a bit less than that.

This book presents itself like a gift book -- remiscent of a table top gift book. Tucked into the pages are Maine's basic beliefs on the goodness of home recipes for soaps, shampoos. There are little bits on skin care and hair care. She provides her favorite recipes, using many of the same ingredients.

Although she refers to the training received in the first chapters, it is less training than a lovely presentation -- for a how to of soap making, I'd use a more informational book or information from a class (for soaps made with lye, thank you very much, pretty pictures are not enough!)

In addition to the interesting recipes (for Russian Dishwashing Disk, for example) there is a chapter on Toilet Bowl Cleaners, a Leather Care recipe, a chapter on Making Your own laundry supplies, another on Natural Pet Care and a section on her invention of the "soap tassels" line -- with a couple of recipes.

The idea, I think, is to take her basic vegetable based recipes (CRISCO OIL!!!) and be motivated to make up some of your own, using the logic behind the percentages she uses and the combination of fragrances, seeds, herbs and such.

An addition to the library -- still haven't found my basic must have can't do without soapmaking book!

Editorial Review:

Like a breath of fresh air, this guide to home and personal care embraces the cleaning ritual as a necessary part of daily life and offers tips on how to make it remarkably stress-free and even enjoyable. By creating homemade cleaning products, soaps, and shampoos, harsh chemical cleaners, artificial scents, and allergy-inducing additives are simply replaced with pure, gentle, and wholesome products. In a world where environmental sensitivities are on the rise and time to complete basic tasks seems to slip away, the efficient recipes and methods in this book come as a welcome surprise. By eliminating unnecessary cleaning products from the home, under-the-counter clutter is greatly reduced, allergies and sensitivities are easily addressed, and favorite scents and textures become a part of the calming and fulfilling ritual of keeping things clean.

Pretty Good 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have read most if not all of the books in all of Myers' series and this was very much like the rest. It is a quick and easy read. The potential murder suspects are numerous which I like. I was not crazy about the personality change in Ben though. He was a jerk to Diana throughout the entire book which was surprising considering he of all people should know how hard it is to be the prime suspect in a murder case. He was insensitive to her constantly and then would get angry at her when she would get upset. If you liked the previous books from Tim Myers then you'll like this book as well.

gotta read this one! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a continuation in a series and a definite must have for the avid reader of Tim Myers. He keeps you in suspense right to the end and keeps you entertained all throughout. Can't wait for his next book!

Editorial Review:

There are really just two ways to make soap -- the cold process and glycerin -- but there are literally thousands of ways to make that soap delightful. Beautifully colored and shaped soap is a joy to use; grainy soap is studded with sand or poppyseeds in an amazingly effective hand cleaner; and pure translucent glycerin soap is as gentle as it is clear.

Shaping, coloring and mixing in additives are all covered in details. Soap, cut or molded into bars, squares, balls, domed bars, and round, is a joy to behold. Precious handmade soap can be personalized as gifts for the bride, for a newborn, or for a birthday by embossing a monogram onto the bar. Colors from subtle to pulsating add another dimension. Ingredients such as violet petals or coffee grounds create soaps that soothe and scrub. Sentimental soap made with May's lavender blooms is so romantic in November; pine scented soaps warm the month of December.

Handmade soap is a gift that says comfort, relaxation, and a treat for the senses -- for oneself or for a friend.
